Why do we have to go to the blacksmith to salvage items?

What game value is added by having to teleport to town, run over the black smith, mark all my items as junk and then salvage items, then get back to my party, now 5 minutes later someone else in the party needs to go to town, etc. This is just stupid. If an item is garbage just let us salvage it right there.

Because it elongates your game time thereby improving Blizzard’s metrics.
