What would you do if you were the game director?

To make D4 enjoyable for the players? What would be your improvements, and what do you think Blizzard its gonna do to keep some playerbase here.

Make will trees interesting. The core issue with the game is the skill tree. Making a choice on whether my ability does more dot dmg or more crit dmg is dogwater. They can keep adding pinnacle bosses, add any endgame content they want, but until they give the player base more agency with there build, they game will always be bad. There’s also only 5 classes. The game hasn’t been balanced since its conception.

If the game isn’t balanced, that means they didn’t test it, or they don’t care to test it. Which are both both not very good reasons.

I make 84k a year right now. If blizzard pays me 100 k I’ll quit my job and come tell you what’s up.

I would get rid of / reduce the boss mat requirements. Maybe a happy medium would be put the boss at the end of the dungeon but if you have the materials you can skip the dungeon and fight it immediately or something.

In D2 I didn’t mind doing 50 Mephisto runs in a row - but I really don’t like doing all sorts of side activities to get keys to fight the boss that I want to grind.

  1. Fix the stash and character limit constraints.
  2. Expand the skill tree to something like 4 choices per skill over the current two while adding a handful of new skills to each class and trying to reformulate so that there is more synergy between skills not unlike what they did with SB.
  3. Make most of the class mechanics more robust and less “set and forget” with lazy bonuses.
  4. Finally remove the possibility of permabricking with the Tempering system.
  5. Turn NMDs into something much more like PoE Maps, especially now that Glyph leveling is tied to Pits instead. They would have much greater variety, rewards, boons and banes, and with the possibility of going several floors deep.
  6. Return the Cube and implement much more robust crafting possibilities, possibly like those seen in PoE using crafting currencies.
  7. Increase the total number of affixes on items of all qualities across the board (probably 5 before Tempering) such that “perfect” items are a pipedream but QoL stats become more readily attainable and builds can be more off the wall and less cookie cutter.
  8. Expand Runewords back to 4 or 5 runes long with the ability to create godly Unique runewords that can be leveled, as well as making combinations that can incorporate more than one trigger and effect at once.
  9. Ensure that the next expansion sees at least one Prime go down, and never releasing an expansion that tells half of one part of a story ever again.
  10. Elimination of much of the Friendship is Magic style writing that has brought down overall narrative quality.

I could probably keep going for a while but this is just the stuff that drives me crazy on first thought.

If I was the game director, I’d go to the forums and delete negative posts that accurately depict the game.

  1. I would offer a lot of Qols. Item stacking/infinite stash tabs (even real money needed)/build port/crafting improvements etc.
  2. Fix game stability issues
  3. Either fix exploit /dupes/ban or create a ssf before in-game ladder comes out.
Starting with those, probably tons more uniques/aspects to make every single skill viable, More interesting content islands. Skill effect MTX……and strictly Focus on soloable contents…

Fix duping should be the main focus

Adding at least 1 endgame activity per Season, and LEAVE IT OPEN to the next Seasons

Focus on developing for your target audience and stop being a pendulum between developing to casuals and to hardcore players. Hardcore players never appreciated the content made for them (which was a lot, AOZ, Gauntlet, Vaults, Dark Citadel, low drops of ancestral items, 300 Paragon grind, etc) so stop trying to cater to them, it only makes your real playerbase leave the Season early

Create a way to make tempering not a bricking system. You need to have a way to reset tempering indefinitely

And they need a better testing team

With that, they can improve D4 in no time

How does duping affect you ? You seem like a super casual player with you ideas and casuals dont trade , they are fine with their tempers and they will never reach t4 which also means for them the endgame is fine. You are contradicting yourself.

It doesnt affect me, it affects the game. If people can just buy the best items on the game in a trade channel that is flooding with those items, then the game becomes dull for them, and you get a drop in players

Tempering is not fine, not even close to being fine

but but how are they going to scam users if they can see the real face of the game?

cash my check. Probably get into lots of debt knowing my job is safe even though I keep failing over and over.

devs literally base their opinion on well classes are performing based on people who only got their gear by duping it.

When devs say classes are in a good spot, they are referring to classes geared to the nines, and they are only geared that way due to dupes.

I’d do things like MTX maintenance fees, you have to pay an extra $15 a month once you accept a single free skin or be threatened with losing all your MTX. Ya know real dirty stuff like accepting a skin with a pre order so you can’t get a refund.

Shhhhhh dont give them any ideas.

After all…

This… If I was responsible for what D4 launched in VOH… I would just admit I got it all wrong and step down.

He got nothing wrong - he did exactly what they paid him to do : get the game shipped .

His tweet on the other hand - kek lul so much salt

As is, Qol the Obdi hunt, give NMD the same amount per dungeon as IH, or atleast every two could equal one IH. Qol the NMD keys. Add modifiers, bring back Hell Portals, create New Affix’s for them.

Bring back Capstones, and offer Obdi, or something new, perhaps add a lair boss from the campaign.

Bring back Breaches Add them to the choice for obdi hunt, and whispers rotation based on location of the breach, which would be a cellar location marked Dark Red, to indicate a Breach available.

Add in Vaults, as a alternative to Running NMD.
Add IH mechanics to situations where it may improve the gameplay of capstone, breach or vault runs.

Increase boss matts drops and availability per Endgame activities.
Continue to build spell and spell combinations, tempers, skills, etc as they have been doing, Rework Original classes where needed to be up to the Spirit born Standard.
Continue to Improve the loot and crafting experience.

Raise Campaign difficulty options to penitent and or T1.

Bring back sacred items , these will be the new rare spawn items, offer unique abilites, but drop less, Perhaps new ones available from new monsters found in the OW, and Dungeon SQ activities, Offering mini unique affix’s like they used to, and perhaps a step further and Skin effects and skill effects of some kind.

Add in Weapon Skills, That flip skills over and change them based on the weapon type available, so for example firebolt casts differently based on if using a staff, wand or sword etc, This could be either a new slot or flip the skill or skills in existing slots.
Inspired by guild wars 2 skill system if you are familiar with it, but making it diablo-like ofc.

That would keep us busy for awhile and I would pause seasons, replay Seasons Starting at S1, until all of this foundationally stuff was done and the game catch’s up to a standard that can then put us back into new season, without breaking the foundations and stumbling along so much.

As well as many bug fixing etc , can’t comment on VOH as i don’t have it.
