Unique items are still really bad overall

The items you’ve listed are good for specific builds.

Selig is likely specifically for Inner Sight Rogue, who gets a buff with decent uptime that gives them infinite resource, and then they become damage immune with Selig. At least I believe it works that way, if it doesn’t yeah this item is terrible.

Starless Skies is for classes that can spam Core skills without stopping. For instance on Blood Lance Necromancer this item will let you pretty much infinitely cast your core skill, because you generate blood orbs while casting which restore resource. It already takes me like 5+ seconds of straight casting to run out, so 40% reduction in cost might make it net positive. Chain Lightning Sorc is another similar build that can infinite spam core.

Lifesteal is really good. You don’t necessarily need the HP and Armor% on helmet.

Doombringer might actually just be a bad item tbh.

Plenty of uniques are BiS though and stronger than legendaries, just for different builds. There are builds that don’t have many/any really good uniques. We just need more uniques in the game.

Frenzy, Reap, Walking Arsenal builds with DB and two generators, Bone Spear if you play to maximize Ossified Essence, CL or Frozen Orb if you play to maximize elementalist’s and edgemaster’s. And I bet a lot of other builds could be created that take advantage of it if you actually have one to use. It is a massive survivability boost.

I mean, you are playing BL Sorc, of course you don’t use either of them?

So with perfect gear you don’t need any more resource reduction and therefore the resource reduction unique is awful? Congrats? Also if you have that much mana maybe melted heart of selig is pretty strong for you.

No, you can heal a percentage of your max life. Lifesteal heals a percentage of your damage. I bet you deal considerably more than 300% of your max life in DPS.

3-6% of your life, not your damage.

Yes, I’m sure you know more about the game than he does. You do understand that people play suboptimal builds all the time because they enjoy them, right? That having Uber uniques that enable those fun builds to clear content is actually a good thing?

Getting survivability on a sword could be a major benefit to anyone running content that is hard enough to require survivability. We’ll see if we get some on Dec 5.

If only this kind of genius was available to the devs. They are clearly not able to invent copy/paste, but good thing you are here to provide design philosophy with such a solid foundation for them.

I think the only way to make uniques better than Legendaries (other than making them ridiculous) is to offer some kind of customization on them to suit different builds from each class. Right now they are too rigid to compete.

Nope, less than half are using a defensive aspect on the amulet, that aspect being Disobedience. On top of that, literally none of them use Doombringer.

DB is bad.

It would certainly work that way, however, if you run Selig on your rogue, you won’t be able to take any damage at all until you proc Inner Sight, because incoming damage will completely deplete your resource. Even for IS rogue, it’s bad.

I honestly don’t know anything about the necro, but there are better mana gen rings in the game by far. Glancing quickly at maxroll, none of the meta necro builds recommend SS.

Well, if the current crop of uniques are only useful in niche situations, that’s a huge problem. They’ve effectively created items that aren’t useful 99% of the time, but they’re the very items we’re all supposed to hunt down by farming ubers, but if they suck for 99% of the player base, what’s the point? Where’s the item hunt to keep us all addicted? Where’s the endorphin rush when we see a unique hit the floor?

So D- tier builds that no one uses? Curiously, none of the meta build sites recommend it for those builds. And where exactly are you thinking they’ll get those generators if a ring slot is occupied?

I have no idea why you think I’m playing BL sorc, honestly.

Perfect gear? You can find that aspect from a codex and the other one drops from the very moment you fire up the game. Those might be the 2 most common aspects in the entire game.

No, because it removes one of the mana generators, while simultaneously depleting mana every time you take damage. It’s horrid.

That isn’t the point. I can stay completely full on HP without Andy’s (only have much better stats like armor, hp, +skills, etc), so what’s the point in using it?

I never said otherwise.

So what? The original claim was that him running it made it automatically good, when it’s horrible, and he just likes to run random stuff for the simple sake of running it. I never said it was bad that he plays poorly, just that him running it doesn’t validate its usefulness as an item.

As of right now, that content doesn’t exist. So as of right now, it’s a bad sword.

Actually, every single improvement for season 2 was copy/pasted from D2, so they’re aware of how effective it is. The only reason they haven’t done it with itemization is because they can’t, since their entire system is so bizarrely put together, they’ve painted themselves into a corner.

But you go ahead and keep white knighting, lol. I promise you, out of the 99% of the player base that left, no one is going to read your comments and think, “Oh wow! So I can use that uber unique on that single build and it’ll perform only 50% less than the legendaries available to me? Well hell, I guess I’ll tell all my friends and we’ll all come back to finish out season 2. This game is amazing!”

I’m level 58 on my sorceror and haven’t found a single unique yet, so…I can’t really speak on if uniques are good or not in S2. I know Butcher has become annoying af. Had to fight him 8 times today, and I only played for a little over 2 hours.

Wudi would probably like to have words with you about Doombringer.

That sword is nutty, especially with the seasonal theme.

  1. The reason why doombringer will outshine other offhands in the new D4 grifts, it adds a whopping 41% to your HP.
That does not make other +life rolls obsolete, it supports them even further.

  2. Andariels might not be as good as a shako, but you can definitely make builds with it, that outshine most of the others.
    Especially with fortify builds.

  3. RoSS was the wet dream of a bonespear necro. Before crit was nerfed, it had perfect stats on top of its effect. But with a grandfather even crit gets uber again.

  4. The selig heart is insane in some pvp builds. Every pvp barb will sell his granny for one of these.

About maxroll. I’m neither a fanboy nor a disciple of em. But I would not deny their ability to theorycraft very hard and make reasonable builds. Every content creator looks like to have its own build, every week a new one. One shot queen, immortal god xy and insane boss killer easy casual fire and forget builds are clickbait.
Its fun for 5 minutes and it works in 60+ NMs like all other builds.

Wudi, Rob, Raxx etc. are not in the top 5 for years, cuz they have no insight.
And I’m sure they do not blast so hard and effectively, cuz they use unreasonable crappy builds.

BTW. the reason, why no maxroll builds have uber uniques, is prolly the fact, that even with Duriel “target farming” only a very small part of the D4 community has some of the ubers yet.
I don’t think, maxroll wants to mock the players and bring out brutal builds, which require a shako + 1 to 2 other uber uniques. In about a month from now I would not be surprised to see maxroll builds with uber rares. Then the serious part of the D4 players should have some ubers.

Your grasp of logic is impeccable Mr. Spock.

30 IQ response. Thanks for the laugh.

some uniques were revised and are very good now, e.g. Temerity. just check video below, it explain at a moment how good Temeroty is now, at min 2:14:

Can tell who has these items and who doesn’t.

checks notes look at Stormclaw build for druid, the build that doesn’t use resources and has infinites of it because of attack speed. That ring is a match made in heaven.

Sure Mothers embrace might give you this bonus if you hit 5 enemies, but nothing if you don’t. This ring is a god send for… checking notes again builds like Lighting Ball Sorc… allows them to spam even more again for almost half the cost.

Life Leech alone is a full vampiric ability, additionally the AoE proccing on fast builds. Great helm overall.

Yeah I guess it’s just a defensive weapon with 41.4% MAX LIFE but I guess we can disregard the 26.2% overall damage boost it gives, and then the additional 29.2% core damage it proves on top of the massive AoE it procs just like Andy’s helm.

Lol, it’s offering like 15% more HP than what you can get from a rare ring. Again, like I said before, even for builds that use no mana, it does barely anything at all. Further, you’re talking about an extremely niche application for an uber unique with a miniscule drop rate.

You think a 15% increase to HP is enough to farm for endless hours and get excited when it drops?

And RoSS offers nothing if you can’t already spam your core skill, then offers nothing once you cast a different skill. Ross is more conditional than ME.

BL isn’t a core skill…

So what? Most builds can stay full HP from native effects in their kits that have the same practical effect, even if it isn’t “Lifesteal” precisely.

30k damage over 5 seconds is useless.

Max life at the cost of mountains of damage.

An additive damage boost at the tail end of a finished, end game character. That’s almost nothing.

Again, additive, and it only applies to core skills. Utterly useless and a complete nonissue.

7k damage in an area around the player. Again, that’s nothing in comparison to the damage I can get out of legendaries or even different uniques. Look how much the two rogue daggers add for comparison. They’re miles apart, and this is an uber unique we’re talking about.

nowhere in the description it is said that unique should be good … being bad is also unique

there is one saying … If you can’t do good, better do bad well

funny… shako, grandfather, doombringer, starless skies. are great uber uniques.

Well they did say they didn’t want uniques being build-defining

No, just a history of games named Diablo, that the Uniques were the most sought after…

“Well they did say they didn’t want uniques being build-defining” This is the same as saying “We don’t want tires to be the deciding factor in which a car rolls”

Horrible analogy. If you want your god-mode items then I guess play D3?

That’s funny, considering the existence of something like Mad Wolf’s Glee or Staff of the Crone, two druid uniques that literally create entirely new builds. Without Mad Wolf’s Glee, a druid can’t even go werewolf.

It seems to me that they use excuses like the one you gave when it’s convenient.

Shako is good, although not as good as some may think. The +4 skills is something you can get on a rare, across 4 different skills. You can also toss 20% DR on it with a legendary aspect.

Grandfather is good, but again, not as good as some people think. I can get the same multiplicative damage on a two handed weapon from a legendary aspect, but actually have control over the other stats on the weapon with farming and crafting.

Starless Skies is utter garbage. Same with DB.

Stop simping over a game. The only reason it has been improved at all is because some people are willing to complain, while the other 99% simply quit. You should be thankful for other posters complaining, even if you don’t understand why or agree.

Further, all of the improvements for season 2 were copy/pasted directly from D2, so the devs are aware of how they should take inspiration from past game. Most likely, this broken system is the product of the 4 past lead designers who worked on the game but left Blizzard, and this current team doesn’t have the option to use all of the systems from past Diablos because the current systems make it nearly impossible.

Bottom line, uber uniques should be insanely good in every regard, like the original (1.08) Grandfather. I get it, they don’t want a single item to be universally BiS, but if they’d simply add a slew of new, useful uniques into the pool, that wouldn’t be a problem.

In D2 1.08, Grandfather was amazing and widely sought after, but Fury was just as good, even better in PVP actually, Doombringer was also amazing and widely used, rares could spawn and be even better (although the likelihood was minsicule), and a handful of other unique swords offered unique stats you couldn’t find on GF that would outshine GF in specific scenarios. On top of that, there were axes, hammers, and polearms that were comparable to GF. Hell, there was even a staff that was arguably better if it rolled ethereal.

This sort of diversity is what allows developers the freedom to actually make unique items excellent, without fear of a single unique being the clear BiS.
