This is exactly what is happening to me too! I have updated every driver, windows, scan and repaired, reinstalled, got rid of the high-resolution assets, redownloaded high-resolution assets, and nothing is working. Please update if you find something that works!

I am having the same issue here.

yup, i have a 4070 too, this came out of no where.

guys this dudes post worked for me:

ame here. Funny thing is, it was working fine earlier in the day, before a reboot. No change in Nvidia driver, no change in patch level. I did get this out of event viewer:

Faulting application name: Diablo IV.exe, version: 2.1.0.61504, time stamp: 0x678ec02d
Faulting module name: sl.pcl.dll, version: 2.4.10.0, time stamp: 0x6647e70d
Exception code: 0xc0000409

For fun, go ahead and rename the sl.pcl.dll to sl.pcl.dll_backup. Shockingly it will launch (no file integrity checks in the client, clearly) but the 3D assets will be totally black, and 2D interface UI will be displayed. Scan and Repair replaces the file, and it crashes on launch again.
Question is what happened over the last 4 nights that caused an incompatibility with the same patch level and the same nvidia driver in that time that would be loaded via reboot cycle via the OS?

f/u:
Confirmed: use the rename trick to just get the blamed thing to launch, then go into Options → Under Graphics, set Resolution Scaling to None. Basically the fix is to disable the poor implementation of DLSS.
Also confirmed reversibility - re-enabling DLSS causes the rendering to go black again.

To be fair, this doesn’t answer what happened in the last few days, but it does get the game back to a functional state. Hope this helps any dev browsing through the forums.

This fixed it for me:

  1. Close BattleNet launcher
  2. Go to C:\ProgramData\Nvidia\ – You may need to show hidden files to see this folder
  3. Rename the NGX folder to NGX_bak
  4. Try launching the game again

There’s a new driver update that worked for me: GeForce Game Ready Driver 572.16

Yep I was the original poster of the workaround Game not starting after 2.1.0.61504 patch

Confirmed (and updated) new Nvidia driver 572.16 fixed the issue.

Thanks so much. I wasn’t crashing but had I the black screen with the UI overlay. Disabling DLSS fixed it right away. It’s so strange because I was playing 8 hours earlier just fine. No updates or anything with Windows or Nvidia either.

I was having the same issue with either the game not launching or getting stuck on a grey screen. I was previously using dlss tweaks to force different models for dlss and had left the WINMM.dll file in the directory. I only noticed that due to a dlsstweaks.log file generating in the Diablo IV folder. That was the root cause of my crash, after removing the file my game launched without issue.

This might not be the issue for your crash, but thought I would leave a comment.

I have tried all the other fixes and this one actually worked!
