A Christian God? I think he is very different in many ways. Inarius was not omnipotent or omniscient. He was a powerful Archangel, but he still had limitations and weaknesses. He was also not benevolent or loving towards his creation. He was arrogant and selfish, and he wanted to use Sanctuary as his own personal paradise. He also feared and hated the Nephalem, because they had the potential to surpass both angels and demons in power. He even used the Worldstone, a powerful artifact that shaped reality, to weaken the Nephalem and make them forget their true origins. Inarius was not worshipped or revered by his creation. He preferred to remain hidden and unknown, and he only revealed himself to a few chosen ones who he manipulated for his own purposes. He also did not have any prophets or messengers who spread his word or teachings. He was more like a tyrant than a Christian god. Inarius was not invincible or eternal. He was eventually captured by Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred and Lilith’s father, who tortured him for centuries in Hell.
The closest parallel I can possibly draw from you comparing him to a Christian god is that he is an Archangel who created Sanctuary, the world where humans live, and he is also the father of the Nephalem, the first generation of humans who had both angelic and demonic blood. He also tried to hide Sanctuary from both Heaven and Hell, and he imposed his own rules and laws on his creation. He even banished Lilith, his wife and co-creator, when she tried to kill all the other angels and demons who helped them create Sanctuary. Is this what you meant?
Thank you for your reply and please don’t take my reply now as an insult if you are a religious person.
Reading your reply it just seems that we have opposite views on Christian God so I’ll just explain some things that you mentioned, but before I do that I would just like to underline that I did say - the closest thing to it or Diablo lore version of it.
omnipotent - Inarius can’t be that because this is a game, wouldn’t be good for the plot in any way
omniscient - he is not for the same reasons
but in a way he is both - from a Sanctuary’s NPC commoner’s viewpoint he is both of those things. In RL an everyday person that goes about their life would be that NPC commoner.
benevolent - this is the part that I apologize for at the beginning of my reply. I do not agree that old testament version of Christian God is benevolent. I am sorry if this offends you, maybe we just have different religious views in real life.
Inarius prophets - what about mother Prava?
Of course I didn’t mean that he is the exact same picture, I just thing that there are very strong parallels that were adjusted so he fits the Diablo lore.
In real life religion we are mostly concerned about who created Earth (sanctuary) while in Diablo lore we have the question about universe creation answered. On Earth we view the being who created it as the God. Later on with scientific discoveries religious doctrines expanded their teaching stating that the same being is responsible for both creating universe and Earth. In Diablo lore it is not the same being.
“He even banished Lilith, his wife and co-creator, when she tried to kill all the other angels and demons who helped them create Sanctuary. Is this what you meant?”
That is a part of what made me think this, but it is a little bit more complex. When I was playing Diablo 1 I think I was about 10 years old and didn’t care much about the lore so the name of the game and the cover implied that I as a player am going to kill “the devil”. That’s all I took from the stroy and I thought it was cool. Then when Diablo 2 came out same thing happened, but then Lord of Destruction expansion came out and what put me off was the fact that I have to kill a boss who comes after Diablo and in every video game a newer boss is almost always stronger. I was confused how can another demon be stronger than the devil. Then I started researching the Diablo lore which led me to finding a lot of those characters in the Bible with Baal being the first one. I’m in not that interested in the Bible, I just find it fun to research those parallels every time a new Diablo game comes out. Except for Immortal, that game doesn’t exist to me (I don’t like cellphone games).
