Seasonal D4 experience

  • Season 0/Base game: Played ice shards sorc until lvl 85ish before quitting.

  • Season 1: Leveled up a bone spear necro until lvl 70ish before quitting.

  • Season 2: First time I leveled a character to 100. Had a good time with arc lash sorc and vampire helltides.

  • Season 3: Disappointing recycled “(insert) powers” theme from season 2, but I was excited to try meteor sorc. Leveled up a meteor sorc to 100

  • Season 4: By far the season I played the most, leveled up a rogue, necro and sorc to 100 and tried various different builds.

  • Season 5: Played mainly a chain lightning sorc up to 100. Infernal hordes were fun but got old pretty quickly.

  • Season 6/VoH: I was very disappointed with the new campaign, but still played a spiritborn to 100 to try out the new class.

  • Season 7: The returning “(insert) powers” theme didn’t convince me to get back into the game. Skipped the season entirely.

  • Upcoming Season 8: (read season 7)

I guess the d4 team is really out of ideas…

What do you guys think, will we get a decent season theme for season 9?

Whatever it is it will be borrowed powers likes season 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, or 8.

Dont exactly know what you expect.

Who knows maybe they will bring back guantlet or refresh NMD or something else

Before, I thought that the theme of season 9 could be the power of NPCs, but now I’m convinced that it will be the power of streamers. I can see the enormous Rob’s Chill power.

Seems like you put plenty of time into the game and enjoyed nearly every season.

Borrowed Powers is a pretty standard seasonal concept and it does get stale. I know you’re not the developer and no one is paying you, but if you’re complaining about what you’re getting you have to have some concept of what you’d prefer to see instead, right?
What do you suggest they do for a seasonal theme? I’m interested.

I wouldn’t expect much in all honesty. They seem to be taking the approach of least path of resistance, and the easiest to implement based on what they already have available. For this game that’s bowered powers.

Now the other game sometimes has more elaborate content added in, and it stays, the only issue with that is they have so many new systems running around in the game as a newer player or even a player that took a break for a bit, would easily be overwhelmed by all the new things in the game.

To their credit they have started to clean it up some. Regardless though, I’m not holding my breath for Blizzard to suddenly wow us with a new seasonal gimmick that becomes a staple in the game. I’m expecting yet another borrowed power, that’ll die out just as quickly as it was implemented.

Season 0 Base Game: Played a Frenzy Barb. Was hitting enemies for 3-4k Dmg.
Season 1 : Only did a few hours as a Frenzy Barb i was still exhausted from Vanilla and S1 did not realy offer anything new.

Season 2: I was going a Frenzy Barb, but now thx to season powers i was hitting for 100.000K+ Dmg instead of 3k Dmg. But enemies did not get harder, everything was cannon fodder

Season 3: Did not played much as i thought the season theme was boring and there was nothing interesting new.

Season 4. I once again played a Frenzy barb. Was able to hit for several hundred thousand dmg as frenzy. Oh there is a new Stat for Bash… hm, its not frenzy but it is a melee skill i can spam so lets try it. Oh now i do 10 million dmg in 1 hit… Hmmm. Okay.

Season 5. Did not realy play game was boring as hell.

Season 6. Hm stat squish, nice, yet somehow i end up doing more dmg then before :person_shrugging: :man_shrugging: :woman_shrugging:

Season 7. Broing

Season 8.

Particularly, I’d like to see new ways to combine different skills in the endgame to change the way builds play. For example, I can easily imagine customizing the skill tree after lvl 60 with “runes” (or some other item) to link different skills together for example:

  • Rune A slotted into Frozen orb and hydra in the skill tree: Hydras cast frozen orb when you do
  • Rune B slotted in meteor and firewall: Critical strikes with meteor activate your firewall enchantment
  • Rune C slotted in teleport, ice armor, and frost nova: Teleporting while ice armor is active breaks ice armor and releases a frost nova.

And so on… I think there is a lot of room for customization of skills in the endgame that is not well explored. Instead, we are given generic powers that every class can use and builds that seem to revolve around what procs them the most. I would like to see power shifted back into the skills for once (not with aspects or unique either)

They are playing it safe after S3 which was quite awesome before it was nerfed into the ground. They could have just tweaked the upgrade requirements instead they removed traps and gutted the season because ppl QQ

S5 was most fun for me, yeah was on the CL sorc like everyone else, was fun, but then i rolled 3 other classes as well, more than any other season because it was fun. Then came S6 and it was a total WTH ?!? then came S7 and im just dumbfounded really. Reading the notes for S8 they obviously are catering to a minority of players at this point.

The one thing that occurs to me at end of every season, is now Mythics are supposed to be the ultime equipment, but with tempering now many of those mythics are just total garbage and the ones that were considered the grand daddy for your class is a nice to have, maybe, kinda.

Actually been enjoying that mythics aren’t absolutely necessary for every build. Was able to take a lacerate druid to pit 90 with no mythics. Was fun being able to use legendary aspects and uniques alone to get there and not have to alter my build to cram in a mythic needed to push higher torments.

S8 is a skip for me. Looking to see how it shakes out with the massive 180 they are doing and I dont wanna be part of the test subjects. For Season 9 I am Looking for many bug fixes, balance and skill tree updates, and aspirational difficulty where it belongs and that is optional content and not the base game.

Honestly I like the vendor idea regardless of its’ intended sarcasm.

“Be a blacksmith and pick which tempers hit (% is still random) and masterworks crit”! “Be an occultist and master the ability to pick your new enchant/+ to skills/cdr appear more frequently”!

I came to the conclusion that D4 might have the wrong business model or something. I think the payed expansions gated content goes against the MTX shop direction.

This brings a problem where they might be holding content for expansions, but at the same time this said content if added more often would bring more people/retain more players, that would ultimately buys more MTX.

Now with expansions, since you have to pay for them and it is still unknown if you need one to play the other, every time you launch a new one you loose some people too. Since it is paid content, the pressure to be the best possible content is greater too.

Anyways, I feel like they spend effort in things like these borrowed powers when they could spend it far better. Like some of the new powers seems to be in fact skills, the effort to add them was probably not low, why don’t make true skills then instead of just a borrowed thing? Why don’t add some special affixes associated with different in game activities? Why don’t invest more in endgame and true metagame progression?

I haven’t played the PTR, but by what I saw I feel they did right with reviewing the bosses systems and expanding it. It needs some changes but it was the kind of change I like to see. Now in following seasons they can add new awakened bosses since they have this base now, systems with this capacity to expand and bring new things are nice for me.

Now, borrowed powers are just something that usually looses its appeal really fast and it won’t feel novelty. I would rather instead they could have brought a Belial based game system, like Illusion items where they were “copy” of the unique items but with interesting twist or a change form crafting system that would allow changing an item beyond what the Occultist can do, Fake NMD where some random stuff changed the area completely, but anyways…
