No, limiting player choice for no reason other than malice is cancer. Anyone who wants to limit what other people do in their own game is the real cancer.
Games naturally lose players when the players feel they have gotten everything out the game they wanted. Games always start with a high population and then lose that population over time as the utility a player feels they gain from the game decreases with each repetition and the novelty wears off. Prohibitively expensive respecs will make the novelty wear off faster. Doing the same thing over and over again every time is not fun. Being able to constantly change things up keeps the game fresh and thus decreases the speed at which utility decays.
Every dev who has ever looked at the metrics for their game has seen this happen. It is why servers always start out full to the brim on so many games and then just naturally decrease over time.
Do some players log thousands of hours in a single game? Sure some do but not most. It is better for your game to be widely regarded as a good game by the people who play for a few months than to only be considered good by the small minority who plays for thousands of hours.
Really? So I should just be able to choose all the gear I want and level from the start? And I can just tell you not to worry about it, and just play through the game how you like? You must have no problem with P2W then, right?
Respec fees are the ‘arcade game style’ development that most developers have moved on from. And its really sad to see them dig their heels in the sand around making a system that serves literally no positive purpose.
But you’re absolutely right. This game ABSOLUTELY needs a massively better skill tree UI if they’re going to make us pay for every change.
Give me the ability to save talent loadouts, have a ‘talent editor’ in-game where you can look at where you can spend your points and how far you can get and what you can do with the points before you ‘lock’ the changes in, etc.
It makes no sense for them to have THIS garbage a UI if they’re going to make it punitive to mis-spend a single point. That’s just utterly stupid. And I thought better of Blizzard Devs than to do something THAT poorly thought out.
nothing like limiting bobby to 1 yacht to keep the “putting my foot down” mentality to a minimum. bad interview, bad answer. be malleable, listen to your audience. how they’ve learned nothing in 30 years boggles the mind
Especially when they recently said that they expect completing a season battlepass would take around 80 hours, and players likely wouldn’t even be max level by then.
So its going to take over 80 hours to level a single character, and we are supposes to do that multiple times per season with the same class? Not gonna happen.
Bad example. Last Epoch respec cost is in playing the game to relevel the skill, but that is significantly accelerated till it is up to the level of your other skill. No respec to different mastery though.
And there are very good reasons for respec limitations.
Sure. Limited respecs is not something that makes a game worse for people playing “only” for a few months however.
Surely it is much faster to lvl character number 2, than number 1.
But it also doesnt seem like the intent is that you lvl multiple characters of the same class.
The intent seemingly is that you dont do that, and simply stick to a build for some time.
You post a lot for somebody that’s just going to play through the campaign then move onto another game because they’re bored. I can tell from everything you’ve ever said you don’t really play games past the initial novelty stages.
Respec costs aren’t going away by launch, but I’m about 80% sure they’ll be gone by the first expansion. shrugs it is what it is. Just gotta live with an outdated design for a year or so, it’ll go away eventually.
