Obols disappear when you have a full inventory (of obols), go back to town to spend some and come back to retrieve the ones left behind.
It has happened in the helltides, the legions, the pit, anywhere.
OMG I thought I was losing my mind. Yes that happens to me too!
Not only that but I’ve had obals disappear entirely, along with other loot when I return to sharded areas like WB or legions. It’s bad enough that I often just write off obals on the ground rather than taking the time to leave and return.

Me too! I seriously thought I was bad at math or something. I had 188 obols on the ground after a pit run. I teleport to town and spend some obols so I have room for more, then immediately teleport back and now there are 20 obols on the ground. I’m not that bad at math! Fix this!
It’s a display bug. You are not losing obols. What that video is showing is the number that originally dropped, but if you pick some up, that number doesn’t update to show how many are remaining until you port out and then back in. At that point, it shows you the correct number of remaining obols.
You can see this easily by first unequipping your pet, then see how many obols drop originally before trying to pick them up. You will see that the number doesn’t change.
