MicroTransactions, DLC's, and Future Content

With MicroTransactions included in this full cost game, what benefit does the player base receive from the extra revenue provided to Blizzard. Will we see content provided for free as a result, or will all additional content be paid DLC’s? It’s understandable that Expansions will be at a cost, but will new characters for example be locked behind a paywall? As a player that doesn’t care about cosmetics, would buying them anyhow support future content, or would I be better off waiting to buy DLC’s/Expansions?

I guess it may be similar to Diablo III were we had an expansion with new content and a DLC with a new character/class. And there might be also plenty of cosmetic contents too (paying season pass & possibly other standalone DLCs a bit like in HearthStone & World of Warcraft).

They’ll announce their plans in due time…

If you don’t care about cosmetics don’t buy cosmetics. In theory the shop will be paying for ongoing new seasonal content and the staff required to make those things happen. They will also be paying for new yachts for the CEO and shareholders.
Expansions (which will almost certainly have a hefty price tag) will further the main story and possibly add new things like new classes, new spells, etc.
Not sure what you are asking about as being locked behind a paywall? You get 10 characters. We don’t know if/when/or how we will get more slots than that.

D4 is a live service game that will have free new content this is in addition to expiations which will cost.

I don’t mean character slots. Say if a new character is released, will we have to pay for that as a DLC, or will that character be included as a result of the increased revenue from the microtransactions? Not caring about cosmetics doesn’t mean I wont buy them if it’s supporting actual content later on, versus just waiting and paying for DLC’s if that will be the only way to get future content.

New classes will for sure be expansions that we have to pay for.

I mean technically it all is supporting further content but we don’t know how much goes to the actual game and how much goes to rich people. I would assume if absolutely no one buys MTX or Battlepasses it could shorten the life of the game but I don’t think that will happen. I guess we will see if the prices feel reasonable and if the MTX/Battlepasses feel like money well spent.

ETA: for example if a MTX for a class (which is the full armor set as well as weapon skins as far as I can tell) costs about $8 people might think that isn’t such a bad deal and feel fine dropping that amount of money from time to time. That seems reasonable to me for a game that already costs $70
If that MTX costs $35 - $85 like the ones in PoE however people will probably lose their minds, Blizzard will get lots of hate on the forums and on other social media. Fewer people will buy them.
I believe the MTX for armor sets in Diablo Immortal are something like $25. That is a free game and that price point is already more reasonable than PoE. But I don’t think people will be pleased paying that amount for a game that isn’t free to play.

So yeah I would say look at what they are offering and if it makes sense to your wallet or your sense of what is fair and right. We will almost certainly get at least one expansion no matter how the shop does.

New characters will most likely come as part of the expansions. They have never said that a new character with be a stand alone DLC. Like the Necromancer was in D3.

Thanks for the input. I’ll just hold off on cosmetics then and wait for DLC’s and Expansions.
