Nope, D4 is the opposite with cooldown reduction abilities and stats that were not present in D3 at the time I left. I have a rogue build that has high energy gain with near-constant Preparation triggers and Shadow clone CD reset, so I get accelerated cooldowns at a pace the demon hunter never had. Maybe there were added into D3 years later after I was long gone?
One of the first things I noticed about D3 when I started playing it was that there was no resource-recovery-on-hit mechanics that was a D2 staple (aka mana steal on hit). Perhaps this is why I hated D3 so much since it was too easy to gas out while playing. If it was added later, it happened after I was long gone.
Out of curiosity, have you ever tried D2 / D2R? Because that game set a pretty high benchmark that even D4 still struggles to meet.
You must have left really early. Most demon hunter builds didn’t require that much CDR, just enough to maintain perma-vengeance. Most classes had very viable builds without stacking huge amounts of CDR.
I left just after the AH was shut down permanently. I was also accustomed to D2/D2R’s mana steal mechanic which meant non-stop attacks with my Windforce Or Titan’s Revenge, so when I tested the demon hunter, it felt like bird turd compared to the strafe/proc amazon and the lightning fury javazon.
D3 is pretty bad. D2R is better, though.

Season 28 of D3 is actually hella fun. If you’re tired of D4 you should give it a shot. A few friends and I sank ~60 hours into it and we had a blast. The game is much better now than it was 5-10 years ago.
Still, I think D4 is a better game at its core. It might take a while, but I’m holding out hope that they’ll make it great.
These patch notes kinda shook my confidence though. Seems they have absolutely no idea what they’re doing at this very moment.
You know what, I actually agree. Best season they have made, since it added some genuine endgame progression system (D4 needs something like that too). Just a shame it is a season theme, so when they finally add something good, it just goes away again.
I still think the rest of the game is at the worst it has ever been though. Scaling is insane, you are geared in a few days, endgame is Grifts with Grifts on etc.
But, that season theme was good.

Season 28 D3 makes it debatable.
Pre season 28 - D3 had some decent seasons but it was just a game of how fast you could go and required you to play certain meta builds for speed or you sucked.
That altar was ridiculously fun and made alts super fun.

I kinda hoped they’d copy the S28 progression idea in S1 of D4. The altar is 1000x better than this heart nonsense. Massive fail in my opinion.
Is game with a long time of experimentation and change to come to the current state it is in better than game that just released?
Ah I see,
Yeah I haven’t played D3 for a couple years but even back when I was playing heavy, it was constant action. I didn’t play it until just before RoS.
I was playing builds that didn’t even use generator skills because you could get all the resource you needed without them.
I agree with you about D2, it has a special charm. I feel like it’s the most clunky in the series though (haven’t played 1) . It could just be the builds I used but I spent half my time drinking potions and refilling my belt. The game was still really appealing overall. I think by today’s standards it’s a bit clunky for my taste but I would still play.
To those who said D3 is the worst game. You haven’t played RoS or the recent version of D3. It did indeed fixed a lot of D3 vanilla issue. It’s actually a great game for casual players, who just like to slay mobs blindlessly, don’t care quest or whatever (yes, still need to do quests known as “bounties” to some amount).
Compared to D4,
- have social community, channel, pub games, not the best but a million better than zero.
- have leader board for each classes, each builds, not the best but a thousand million better than zero.
- really good seasonal theme for the past few seasons (probably never again as the D4 released but who know, when D4 fallen, people might be interested in D3 again. Blizz will do everything to keep the franchise.) I’m not saying season on D4 will fall but probably it’s killed with the nerf patch b4 the season started.
Hmm I remember d3 being more slightly “pay to win” with the auction house. Scarcity of loot to use gold for auction house. The ability to buy gold or gear with “real money” at auction house. Boosting.
I can’t really complain much about d4 compare to d3 launch. Cosmetics in the store dont really look that much better then the gear i found in the game. Game play i do feel like i have alot more freedom what i want to build in d4. D3 abilities felt like a M.o.p. talent system that i didnt like it made builds feel more constrictive to me.
The only end game in d3 i recall at launch because i wont involve R.o.s. was secret uber bosses you fought in pairs or you rolled new characters to try to build.
The campaign was fantastic no cringey demon lord was telling me their plan every 10 minutes. I didnt mind randomized zones either.
The storyline was okay. Wasnt the best i did try to speed run it in act 3 and 4 i did enjoy act 1 minus cain incident. Alot of the journals and companions became interesting lore pieces. Which i think d4 kinda missing that point by a short bit.
Launch wise i prefer d4 over d3. D4 i enjoy the overall campaign and bosses i did a dumb got to 40 before touching the campaign over renown which created interesting challenges all together.
Allthough i do like d2 better then both of them combine but I wont complain d4 did any worse then d3.
Diablo 3 is an arcade mini brain game. No fun for me whatsoever. I like to grind and work for my stuff. Not getting free handouts.
In it’s current state yes D3 is much better than D4. So much got left out of D4 it’s mind boggling that they would just leave out entire systems that they worked years and years to perfect.
Hard to answer that on behalf of others - IMO Diablo 4 is the much superior game…but both missed the opportunity to be great.
Diablo 4 has approx. 6 months IMO to turn the ship around, if we are not seeing major (structural stuff not just tuning) changes by season 3 its going just be another Diablo 3 situation.
Most people won’t care if the game is great in 18 months, it needs to be massively improved before the end of this year!
BG3 is already blowing the RPG world apart and while not a directly comparable game it is an example of what can be done.
uhhh i used teleport AND lightning in d2.
That’s 2 buttons. EliTE GameR
D3’s endgame loop of Rift/Greater rifts blows D4’s NMD, Helltide out of the water.
D3 has alot of replayability with the the rift system, D4 has not… getting bored after 2-3 NMD’s.
D4 has IMO a very good campaign
IMO D4 strayed completely away from the format of D1-3 in the story telling. The story is bad. Lilith is a bore. I don’t want some lesser evil. GIVE ME THE PRIMES. Which to be fair may be coming, but this wasn’t a good start for D4.
Oh we have…
D3 at release was actually interesting. Had good combat at least. So much else was lacking of course (and it had the atrocious Auction House).
It only got worse and worse over time, especially in the RoS patches. Initial RoS release was kinda okay. Before droprates got boosted to infinity, and the whole power creep process truly began.
If the question was whether vanilla D3 or D4 is better, I would be less certain. But for current D3 or D4, it is D4 by a landslide tbh. It wins just by showing up.
I’d argue it was at launch as well, but I know that’s controversial. I certainly had more fun playing it.
