I prefer seasons over expansions, with maybe a major expansion every other year or so. More frequent seasons will keep me interested more often over a longer period of time than 1-2 expansions per year (if that) where I have 5-15 hours of campaign and some other gimmicks.
I think (I hope) Blizzard realizes that “triple treasure golem season!” is not what we are looking for. Or “Every so often, portals open and monsters come out. Kill them for a chest”. No. No. No. A system to engage in, a gui to invest some resource or currency into. Something that alters my Necro blight build that Im using today into a different playstyle tomorrow.
Diablo 3 came out in 2012. ROS followed and was a great EXPANSION. The game was left to rot after that and they finally gave us the hamster wheel of seasons to keep it in ZOMBIE state.
They typically introduce new zones and new classes on top of other updates like new items or new skills. They may even include new gameplay modes. Expansions will typically expand upon the story as well.
All of this is to say, Expansions are more resource involved and take a lot more time.
I suspect we’ll see Expansions in 12-18 month intervals.
Seasons are a way to introduce small doses of new content every 3-4 months on the other hand in between Expansions. The reset, battle pass, and leaderboard aspect of seasons also give the more intensive players a motivation to stay involved in the game between Expansions.
It does not matter what you want we are getting both of them, deal with it.
Seasons have been a part of Diablo for several years and most people play them.
ROS and the first Season came out in 2014 so what are you crying about.
With the foundations they built now, I don’t think there should be any seasons. They should just add content instead. Do seasonal BP with cosmetics though. It’s not a fun game to restart in.
Expansions are not generally free. They most certainly won’t be free in D4.
So the reason we’re getting seasons is for them to continue giving players incentive for playing the game until they feel comfortable releasing an expansion. Imagine releasing an expansion 2 months after the game release? People would be so mad that they have to drop another $70 on more content already
Popular online RPGs only have 2 ways to keep players interested. Seasons, and power creep. D4 (and most ARPGs) went with seasons.
I like expansions, but part of me knows that my love for expansions was partly the physicality of them. Blizzard box art was unlike anything else during the 2000s to early 2010s.
The grind is the point, chasing items for new builds is the point. That’s literally the core of an ARPG. It seems like the genre just isn’t what you enjoy, and that is okay too.
Chasing cool items, and killing interesting mobs is the core of an ARPG. Riding mount 20 seconds, dismount kill 1 mob pack, mount and repeat is more world of warcraft than ARPG. Nightmare dungeons are similar to M+ aswell.
People tend to forgot that Diablo is a “grind” game……
All these new people coming to Diablo to follow the “trending” game market, want it to suit their wants and needs.
Diablo 4 has and will remain a grindy game & a lot of us love it….
No different then playing world of Warcraft and maxing out your gear by “grinding” then a new season is released, then to have to replace all your gear.
The problem isn’t the grinding, it’s about the grinding doing nothing for you. You barley get stronger by lvling up or getting new items, since the game scales with you. “Yay +10 dmg weapon, at the same time mobs got +10 hp”.
