Frame Rate Hitching / Stuttering on PC 4090

As an addendum I would also like to state that the stutter problem persisted even with all settings turned to Low, and at both 4K and 1440p resolutions. It is very obviously not related to hardware but rather something with the game or some kind of interfering network/Windows configuration.

somebody on reddit told me win11 might be the cause. at least we had same specs only difference was windows 11 lol

I would believe it. Windows 11 has caused problems in other games. Hitman is 100% unplayable on Windows 11 and the devs refuse to update it. Maybe running D4 in Windows 10 compatibility mode could help, assuming that is even an option in Windows 11.

I dont use windows 11 and still have these issues with diablo (only diablo 4 nothing else) also i had windows 11 and never had issues with other games on

4090
13900k
64gb of ram ddr5 6000mhz
games are installed on an M.2 ssd

diablo 4 had this issue on first beta second beta and server slam they never acknowledged it and probably never will because its a game developed for console cucks and we PC players need to deal with this every single time , they just ignore us over and over again i already reported this issue back on beta 1 and beta 2 never got acknowledged or fixed i updated drivers updated windows and yeah i dont have this on any other game , only this D4

P.S the reason i switched back to win 10 from 11 was that i didn’t like the UI feels like mobile for some reason i dont like it maybe windows 12 in the future will be better but for now win 10 is the way to go for me

Experiencing the same issues, it’s not unplayable but close to it. 1 second or so hitches, particularly during crowded fights or in multiplayer, or in the main town. Did get me killed in a fight once, really irritated me. Couldn’t see myself playing hardcore ever with this issue present, and frankly as hyped am with this game I don’t see myself playing a lot until it’s resolved, heavy fights will be unplayable in endgame.

I upgraded my Mobo/CPU and ram between beta weekends and the server slam and issues were the same on all of them.

Troubleshooting:
Noticed VRAM was pushing 90-95% usage on average. More than any other game I’ve played so far. I also noticed my GPU usage was wildly fluctuating, going from very high load and dropping to 0% briefly and back up during the hitches. (Can update screenshots when I’m home)
Playing with ultra textures causes the most hitches, basically every few seconds. Unplayable.
High textures reduced the hitches significantly to only during heavy fights and multiplayer.

Not ruling out the possibility of network related issues but my network is generally stable, never has any latency or lag in other online games.

Specs:
4k 144hz
Ryzen 7950x3D
RTX 3080
32 GB G Skill 6000mhz
NVME SSD

I might have something.

I have matched FenrisDebug events to frame drops in my original video from post:

They seem to match perfectly.

Bunch of “audio events” within 4 seconds after 13:55:18 when frame drop is occuring

Howdy Everyone!

We are looking into what was causing this to happen during the Server Slam and have a request for some information. Please reply back to this thread if you have a moment. We super appreciate everyone’s help!

  1. What applications are running in the background? (Antivirus, lower-level software that monitors running hardware/software, streaming applications, etc)

  2. What devices are connected to your computer? (USB devices, audio devices, etc)

  3. For those experiencing stuttering, possibly associated with audio device issues.

  • Is Spatial Sound enabled in Windows?
  • What devices are enabled?
  • Does the behavior change if Play in Background is enabled in Sound Options?

Finally if you still have the Server Slam installed please get us the fenrisdebug.txt log file (found in the install directory/folder) Please email this to the following:

Techinfo@blizzard.com
Subject: Frame rate/hitching D4

If any additional information is needed we will post here. Again a big thank you to everyone for the reports.

I don’t believe the stuttering I had was audio related because I can completely get rid of the stuttering by lowering textures to medium. This is despite the fact the in game settings say medium textures are for 3gb vram cards and high textures are for 8gb vram cards. Enabling high textures (which is what it auto detected to) caused stuttering on an RTX 2070 8gb card.

I had this occur both in open beta and server slam with slightly different systems though the video card remained the same. I upgraded Cpu/ram/mb in between.

Open Beta:
i5-9600k
msi z390 tomahawk
16gb ddr4
rtx 2070 8gb

Server Slam:
i7-13700k
asus z790 prime
32gb ddr5
rtx 2070 8gb

Same result for both systems. I had to lower textures from high to medium for a stutter-free experience.

I’ve also had stuttering/lag pauses as well. Back during the beta in march I had a different build.
i7-9700k
32gb ram ddr4
3080 evga ftw3 ultra 10gb

Putting the textures to medium from high also helped but didn’t fix it completely. Now my current build is a i9-13900k 64GB DDR5 same video card and a fresh install of windows 11. Only have Logitech G hub and windows security running. Spacial sound disabled and only have a keyboard and mouse connected by usb. Audio comes out from my LG B8 4K tv

Now my stuttering experiences were different during the server slam. Right when i entered the game I wouldn’t have any issues. If I would just go right out of town and go into a dungeon it would be fine. Now if I teleport back into town or walk into town, that for me could cause the stuttering or lag pauses I’d like to call them. I have vsync enabled and fps capped at 60fps. All settings on ultra 4k. If it started to lag/stutter on me, I would exit the game and restart it. Everything would run smoothly after relaunching the game. During the Ashava world boss event I was able to launch my game, spawn from the nearest town and walk all the way to the boss. Killed the boss with one minute remaining with a full group of lvl 20’s and not a bit of lag/stuttering. After going back into town and doing other quests, then that’s when the lag came back.

Unfortunately I deleted the server slam from my computer so I can’t forward the txt file but hopefully this information can help.

Thanks for looking into this Blizz.

  1. I reduced the backround applications down to the bare minimum after a fresh windows install (removed all asus software ie armoury crate, ai suite) , including stopping any xbox services from running in the backround (windows 11 home 64bit). I have windows defender in the backround however I have tried disabling virus/threat protection, device security and firewall service.

  2. Devices connected to my computer include Logitech G512 keyboard , Razer Deathadder V2 (razer software uninstalled), Steelseries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless Headphones (wireless receiver plugged in via USB).

  3. Not sure if the stuttering was associated with audio device issues spatial sound was always disabled. The devices enabled are the steelseries arctis nova pro wireless heaphones. I didn’t actually think of checking the play in backround option during the previous beta or server slam so I can’t confirm this.

Sending through the log file now.

Man yeah, my log file is absolutely littered with Polling Audio devices as a previous user stated… and it’s happening like every 20-30 seconds give or take.

The entire log is basically polling audio devices… Brief snapshot of what it looks like. Note the ~20-second jump from 16 to 35:

I’ll send the whole file to the address requested.

My system randomly crashes during the server slam. My monitors go black and the system either restarts or shuts down completely.
I didn’t experience this during the beta and after looking on the forums multiple people seem to experience this. I’m not using Razer hardware/software or an additional anti-virus next to Windows defender (there was a thread stating that these might cause problems).

I’ve contacted technical support and included my system diag files.

Specs
Latest Nvidia drivers, Win11 - latest update.
GPU: 3060ti, CPU: Ryzen 7 7700x, 32gb RAM

Thanks, Joynueer, I’m genuinely impressed and happy that this is being taken seriously. Kudos!

  1. What applications are running in the background? (Antivirus, lower-level software that monitors running hardware/software, streaming applications, etc)
I tried closing all non-vital processes which did not help. But usually what was running:

  • Wallpaper enging (in stopped mode)
  • f.lux
  • Steam
  • LGHUB
  • Nvidia Settings
  • Maybe more that I’m forgetting

Does the behavior change if Play in Background is enabled in Sound Options? -Did not have possibility to test

Sent in my log files as well.

Thanks again!

Hello,

I’ve the same issue.

  1. Firefox, Asus Armory Crate, discord, Windows Security, Battle.net app, Logitech GHUB, Logi Tune, Fury Control, Palit thunder master, windows 11 smartphone link,

  2. Logitech G915 LIGHTSPEED, asus rog keris wireless, logitech G935, logitech BRIO 500, alienware aw3423dw, samsung inductive charging pad for smartphones

  3. Is Spatial Sound enabled in Windows? No, but via Logitech GHUB it is
What devices are enabled? No other audiodevices except the Logitech G935 headset
Does the behavior change if Play in Background is enabled in Sound Options? Dont know

I will send the debug files soon.

My setup is:
GPU: RTX 4090 Palit
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Motherboard: Asus Prime X670E-Pro WiFi
RAM: Kingston Fury KF560C36BBEAK2-32
Hard drive: SAMSUNG 990 PRO 2 TB, SSD
PSU: PURE POWER 12 M 1000W

The stuttering occured every few minutes for a few seconds up to like 15 seconds. It always seemed, that the stuttering occured when loading things (spells, new area etc.). But it was kind of random.

Another thing I noticed is, that when Diablo 4 was in background firefox was really slow. All PC ressources were far from limit, and when playing games with higher requirements firefox works just fine.

Maybe it was loading the sound of new things? And stuck on choosing the right audio device? I doubt my 990PRO cant load fast enough?

  1. What applications are running in the background? (Antivirus, lower-level software that monitors running hardware/software, streaming applications, etc)

Nothing. Normally I run Spotify in the background but for testing I tried playing without Spotify open. But I still had the stutter.

  1. What devices are connected to your computer? (USB devices, audio devices, etc)

Keyboard (Sharkoon Skiller SGK5), Mouse (Razer Viper 8K) Audio Interface (SSL 2+) with USB and Monitor (Asus TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A) with Displayport.

Thank you for taking this problem serious! Seems like D4 is really important for Blizzard. Love it! Hopefully you’ll find a solution. Maybe it’s an NVIDIA diver problem since nearly everyone with the stutters here has NVIDIA GPUs.

its been like that since beta 1 and 2 hopefully it will be looked into and fixed !

-Operating system is windows 10 updated to the lastest version
-Drivers are updated (nvidia , bios ) to the lastest version
-Same system was checked on many other games with much higher requirements and ran perfectly fine metro exodus enhanced edition, BF 2042 , AC valhalla , Cyberpunk 2077 etc.

Hi,

  1. Windows Defender, MSI Afterburner, Nvidia Experience. No streaming app.
  2. USB cable keybord, USB cable mouse, USB Headset, USB printer (if printer USB cable is disconnected, then nothing changed).
  3. HyperX Virtual surround sound, but when I unppluged headset nothing changed
Only realtek audio (on board sound card), HyperX headset
    I dont know, I haven’t tried

Unfortunately, I have uninstalled game.

You can still find the logs in your install folder if you have not deleted it. I had also uninstalled but the folder was still there.
