DIV Beta - My Experience (Realistic Feedback)

I’m not here to moan about beta specific issues, error codes or queue’s etc. That was all expected and all happened, it should be better but hey. Also not interested in people who are here to just defend any criticism at all. This game isn’t perfect, it needs plenty of work still, and I’m sure it will get it. I bought the deluxe edition, and looking forward to full release. I’m enjoying my experience, that’s what matters.

Well, the game definitely has the feel I was wanting, dark and gritty. You’ve been working on that clearly and it shows, it’s fantastic. The world feels great to be in and the story and quests are fun, even if the endgame is what ultimately matters for many in Diablo. There’s a fair few positives so far, gameplay is decent, the talent tree is promising and well just in general for a beta I’m feeling positive.

My main issue so far is that there’s an arcade feeling that I just cant shake, even with the great world and design choices you’ve chosen elsewhere in the game. It’s got that Diablo Immortal feeling about it somewhat. It’s hard to pinpoint it exactly but I’m pretty sure it’s UI based. The MMO feel is upon us. This is a clear design choice and it’s not going anywhere, I’m not expecting it to and I accept it but can we maybe make it a little less intrusive? You’ve built this dark gritty world but then plastered an MMO ui over it that frankly, takes from it.

- UI size options: The UI is simply way too big for my 1440p screen (I can’t speak for 1080 monitors). All the icons etc. should be way smaller. It would be nice to give players this option, if they were smaller it would make it feel less arcadey.

- Screen Zoom: I feel like I’m way too close to my character at times, in general. I’m not expecting you to let us zoom out super far but, FOV options and maybe a slight zoom out for bigger monitors would be nice, and also help us get immersed a little more.

Map: I get it, it’s an MMO style, you press the map and BAM, everything is there, social, clan, quests etc. But maybe it would be nice to have two versions? shift tab, for the current style, tab for the old style just the map only (with icons etc) set to 40/50% opactity (let us decide) in the middle, as it used to be in D2 and D3. I’ve actually found I’m not even looking at the new minimap top right really, it’s far too zoomed in, I’d be surprised if most players aren’t just pressing tab as they run, especially diablo players.

Loading Screens: What is the deal with all the loading screens? every portal, every dungeon entrance, even the minor ones. I didn’t even realise at first but when you do, wow it feels bad. Is this something that will persist into the final version of the game or just a beta thing? surely we can make these more fluid?

Offline Mode: It doesn’t seem like it’s what you want, I’m not expecting change here but wow is it immersion-breaking when you’re running alone through this dark world, feeling isolated, in danger, doing quests and see 2/3 other Nephalem just diving around with their cool mmo name and health bars causing havoc. I have nothing against grouping, if people want to group, but give us a way of playing the game solo if we want to. The amount of network lag and world stutter that is simply down to us being forced to be ‘online’. Towns aren’t smooth at all. This needs work if you want to continue this path.

Overall an enjoyable experience, lots of positives for sure, I’m looking forward to the full release and will still play more of the beta this weekend but yeah, I feel like a big part of my initial worry with the game can be solved with realistic, fair UI tweaks for the most part.

I agree for the most part. No way they add offline mode after putting all the MMO stuff in though.

Big Issues for me:

*No transparent map that can have on the screen at all times, every other Diablo has one we need to see where we;re going without having to open the map all the time.

*Too early to say 100%, but gear feels incredibly underwhelming. ARPG’s longevity depends entirely on how good the loot for the game is, unless we’re missing something in end game (and hopefully we are) the current loot won’t keep a lot of the hardcore arpg fans interested and engaged.

*Build diversity up to level 25 (sorc) doesn’t feel too good, kept going back to the Hydra Fire build because all others were inferior. I had 9 legendaries drop in the time it took me to reach lv 25 and none of them came close to being anything remotly close to the damage fire hydra can put out. Again its only level 25, but even after looking through the talents I can only hope that theres significant skill moddifiers in the paragon tree.

*Chests need to be highlighted, its terrible i feel like half the time in the dark dungeons I don’t even see them going through the first time.

*Zones not loading, have no idea why some zones refuse to load. I’m sure it’s a bug and will be fixed though. (it better be lol)

*Really would love to see monster level scalling turned off, or Bosses tied to a certain level. The butcher is in the game and his retardedly over powered, he also is a random spawn in a dungeon. So theres no way to know if his going to be in the dungeon your running until he wipes the floor with you and you can never out scale him since monsters scale in this game. Seams like HC wont be a popular choice in this game haha.

Everything else I’m happy with, but these are my major concerns.

Appreciate you giving your thoughts! that’s what this is all about after all. Fair feedback, not just people salty that they couldn’t get into a beta (rightly so, but there’s a place for that I guess outside of genuine game feedback).

After writing my post and jumping back into the beta I’m like 99% convinced that the ‘off’ feel I mention is genuinely mostly UI choices / decision making. A lot of little things adding up to a feel of arcade-style awkwardness. Even the character screen is a bit off to me, fullscreen etc.

I’m hoping and expecting that basic features like UI Scale and maybe more options to hide certain things if the player wants it will lead to a much more immersed experience. Not every player needs hand-holding this much or every icon, screen and feature thrown in their faces.

That’s the one thing that feels fine to me. But I’m playing in 4k, UI scale and feel, all feels good. But I don’t see why UI scaling shouldn’t be implemented in the game (could be they just left if out of the beta) there isn’t anything under graphics?

Hi all,
Really love it all…but that’s just just my opinion…Played the End game Beta last year and yes…there were some hickups yesterday…But for the most part I really enjoyed it and was able to play without too many hickups…Just my opinion

I am less generous on the UI issues. The current iteration is ugly. It feels like it is meant for a phone game. I used to skin my WoW health/mana into the Diablo artwork. There is no artwork here, just utilitarian ugly.

No overlay map is almost a deal breaker for me. The minimap manages to be distractingly intrusive at the same time as it is useless.

The load screens for everything is obnoxious. The dungeons are repetitively the same 3 formulae and take less time to run than they do to run to and wait through load screens.

I don’t want to see SuperBarb and XxThunderBabexX out causing frame drops as I grind my way across the storm wracked tundra unless I invited them to be there.

There are some positives. While the skill system doesn’t seem all that robust, it does feel fairly intuitive and so will not turn off casual players. The graphic effects for most moves is appropriately flashy with some being downright awesome.

The storyline is nicely gritty with this being the first time I felt the DoB confirmation was really appropriate. Lots of good dark cringes lurking in the corners.

Gear has the potential to be interesting, though none of my “legendary” drops have made me go ooooooh I wanna do X!

Smart loot and class forced loot are terrible. If I want to make a super strong sorc that smacks things with a giant axe while using only reflexive magic effects, more power to me. One of the coolest things about D2 was thinking outside Blizzard’s box and building bizarrely effective characters.

If the Diablo name were not stamped on this game, I would probably be alright with it as a $15 steam sale game. I am kinda not alright with it mucking up a franchise I love while costing more than most triple A titles even with absurd inflation.

This. This is absolutely spot on. It DOES feel like it’s been made for a phone / console. It has that arcadey feel about it still, not as bad as Immortal but it’s still there. It’s like they’ve moved away from it somewhat but it still has that essence. This shouldn’t feel like that at all, frankly.

The map has always worked, it’s what we’re used to. Why change it? I mean, I get it, things evolve, new design principles and ideas, but you can do that without getting rid of what people liked, or at least give the option to choose which you prefer.

Yep, the load screens are a big issue, previous iterations of diablo felt fluid with this, you used a waypoint and it was quick, snappy.

Yes! a good example earlier, was running through the snow, was loving it, dark, immersed somewhat and a barb literally just come flying across my screen charging into a mob I was fighting. It just made me laugh, like literally laugh.

I did get a hydra legendary, which meant I could spawn 2, and it did effect my build but yeah, other than that they’ve been quite unspectacular.
