Hi guys,
I do really hope the devs do give these forums a scout because after having tried the beta, I can totally imagine that if they do create something like a PvP arena new content for D4 in the months ahead, this can potentially turn into the next ‘Dota-esque’ revolution (cue how dota was made popular by warcraft 3).
As it stands, the character combat feels so smooth that I think this will make for an enjoyable closed arena experience, such as 1v1 or even large scale team 15 v 15 PvP, capture the flag, territorial wars, kill-guy-with-the-crown etc.
In such arenas, players all start out evenly leveled, with items being laid out across the maps along with obtainable boons to keep things interesting and fresh each match, much like how games like Nox and Rift have done in the past.
If D4 can introduce this as a separate feature much like we have custom games in the Warcraft and Starcraft series, I am very confident people will not get bored of D4 for a long time.
Thoughts and opinions about this, guys?

some really interesting ideas man
The idea of doing a 3 lane moba style arena, or something else what you’ve said is pretty freaking sweet.
the moba thing really got me wondering
im not a huge instanced pvp kinda guy, if it attracts players, or keeps people playing, im all for it!
(just a heads up, lots of pve only players are gonna come and shoot your idea down for the mere fact that they dont play pvp or want to see more players enjoy the game)

Once PvE content is top notch, I do not mind additional PvP features, that said priorities are clear. PvE > PvP by a mile.

The problem is balancing. It’s a ton of work to get it right. I doubt they are going to put the effort in really. I don’t think PvP is going to be all that great in general. PvE is the priority here.

I suppose what I am trying to put forward is, this additional content should not in anyway compromise the PvE nature of the genre, but rather, supplement as an added content.
I’d imagine it’d be nice to take a leveling break once in a while and try something different to freshen things up. Ladders and ratings can be included to increase the competitive nature, synonymous to the seasons of PvE.
I feel like the combat system is so smooth and fast paced down here, it’d be a pity if it is not utilised to its full potential. I can see how these different arenas can be a total bomb if it does materalise!

The games at the top of the industry would beg to differ with that statement.
With the money Blizzard are getting from this they can make an entirely new, additional paragorn board down the road that focuses on “defeating humans” that is used and focused purely for all pvp modes and features.

Sounds awesome!
They could definitely tie / relate in the RPG (loot, items, combining items to make more powerful ones) and NPC killing aspects of a MOBA and put it into a D4 battleground kind of environment.
I love this idea as a start. Hopefully blizzard can get creative like this and make a PvP scene. We will need a PvP spec tab implemented for stuff like this but I wouldn’t think that would be hard to create, and it wouldn’t be a spec you could use for PVE, just these kinds of things.

Totally! They can even implement the lore to the different battlefields, ie. heaven vs hell on sanctuary, tristam for nostalgia.

Hard pass.
PvP additions should be solo and unbalanced. Perhaps allowing players to control a demon in Fields of Hatred.
Making an arena addition would go about as well as Blizzards current MOBA.
I’m far from a PvP enthusiast, but I don’t see too much issue with them making an arena style thing that people can join in teams, if they so choose.
If they’re going to continue to promote ‘play your way’ like the marketing team is trying pretty hard to push, got to cover a lot of bases, so long as they don’t make it mandatory for anything

I am fairly certain “Play your way” doesn’t include everything under the sun.
MOBAs just aren’t as popular as they used to be. It would be a waste of time.
Oh sure not everything, but there seems to be a few pvpers here and if Blizzard is intent on making them happy, this sounds like a way to go about it

I think we shouldn’t stray too far from the 4-man party aspects, aside from 1v1.
Have 3 main modes besides openworld PvP zones:
-
-
1v1 Duel mode. Challenge any player in the openworld to a fight, function on chat wheel, like an emote. Irregular ring is draw up around 2 players, each have 5 HP pots, refunded after fight. Achievements attached to this mode.
-
-
Arena PvP. 1v1, 4v4 Death Match in arena, possibly with objectives like powerups or healing orbs. Battlerite did this already and it’s like D4 combat.

MOBA.
3.1) MAP: 2 Lane map, 4-man teams to facilitate maximum strategy: Solo, Duo and Jungler/Roamer.
3.2) HEROES: Heroes: Each class in D4 is broken down into 5-6 SUBCLASSES that become a preset with some variety in passives and skill point distribution.
3.3) ITEMS: All items are stripped from heroes, but can be bought with gold gained in game time.
Add a few “legendary aspect” items and some utility actives (like a hourglass, or force staff).
3.4) XP: Individual XP is CRUCIAL!
3.5) NEUTRALS: Have neutral monsters on map to gain buffs, or ingredients to use in base for full skillpoint respec (so you can be laner early game and split pusher late game). Optional.
3.6) CAMERA: Have camera unlock button only for scouting map and using pings- once player command is issues, camera snaps back onto player lock.
D4 might consider taking this MOBA mode and making it free to play, like Warzone. To draw in new players, and keep servers alive. This way ranked modes will be more fluid.
F2P players will have no access to cosmetics.
Buy Diablo 4 to be able to take your cosmetics you grind in game, to the PvP modes.

D4 Arena/MOBA PvP modes are separately normalized modes where most items may be disabled/tweaked.
You can outsource this work until it’s set up, like Valve did with Dota 2

There are tens of millions of daily active unique MOBA accounts across PC and mobile. Some have gone over to Mobile for stagnation in the PC MOBA market.
Also, a D4 MOBA can work, in concept. You can have both PvP kinds.

I do not really care about games from top of the industry : )
We are discussing D4 from our current perspective in terms of what could be added in the future. Diablo has it’s own quality and does not have to look at other titles. Thankfully.

They’ve mentioned there is going to be little balance for PvP so I doubt it would work.

right now the pvp system they have reminds me of the dark zone in the division
It’s still a ton of work. I didn’t say it’s impossible. If they spent enough resources they could probably come up with something at least descent. But it could also end up just being a lot worse than your average moba is really. So then what would be the point when those resources could go elsewhere. I doubt it’s a priority for them and I doubt we’ll see it happen.
100% there with ya on Battlegrounds / Arenas.
Lost Ark has similar combat and some really good Arena gameplay.
Seeing it on an even larger scale with TDM / Objective battle grounds would be amazing.
Any time you have pvp though thats competitive or ranked, class balance becomes crucial - would need a whole team developed and assigned to that aspect.
I saw Ghostcrawler is leaving the Riot MMO team, snatch him back up lol
