This is nothing at all like how D2 works.
The campaign isn’t the core of the game. It’s a fun experience you do once. But if you aren’t enjoying it and you would enjoy playing WT3, then it seems odd to refuse to have that fun and instead complain that they should change a part of the game that is universally praised.

The campaign is universally praised. That doesn’t mean literally everyone loved it, but it was praised even by many people who dislike the game overall. It got outstanding review scores mostly on the back of the campaign.
