How is this insignificant? Player retention is a direct reflection of how enjoyable the game is, for one, but the other big thing is how willing the developers are to actually work on the game. In a game that’s thriving, there’s more money coming in. When a game is truly “dead”, the devs aren’t going to do anything with it.
Granted, even with the rapid decline in player population, D4 is new enough they’re almost certainly going to keep working on it in an effort to bring people back, but the motivation to bring people back isn’t the same thing as a healthy player base, and will only last so long.
If people don’t actually come back and monetarily support the game, the devs will certainly abandon ship, at some point.
This is a good example.
Yeah, I’ve heard CP is actually in a great place currently. However, I think the heartbreak that accompanied a company like CDPR going to the dark side and mimicking the shady corporate practices they had never shown before that, might be too much to really recover from. It’ll probably take something like a new, incredible Witcher to really change the general public perception.
If you look at the very first campfire after release, it had millions of views. The latest? Like 12k, lol. The decline is seriously insane to me.
Yeah, for a game that was like 3 months old and had sold tens of millions, to all of the sudden be free, then remain on sales for nearly half off… completely mind-blowing. And honestly, perfectly indicative of the game’s current state.
Nothing wrong with that! If you’re having fun, just keep having fun. And honestly, some people merely want something to play for an hour in the evening, maybe a couple hours on a Saturday, then restart at the start of a season. If that’s you, more power to you.
For me personally, I don’t watch TV, and gaming is my default state of doing nothing at the end of the day, so I really enjoy games that are entirely addictive. In fact, my brother, my grandpa, my lil’ lady, and myself all game together, depending on the game. For us, the game needs to be truly addictive or the group gets bored and moves on to something else. Since we all enjoy gaming with each other, it’s rare for one of us to play something the rest don’t play.
