Probably gonna get a bunch of flak for this but I feel like with the number of random +1 or +2 to class skills, sometimes ones that we don’t put points into, really makes me feel like I’m missing out on certain utilities of my class, or at least missing out on the bonus from pieces of gear simply because I have to use the 4 hotbar slots for the most important abilities only. It could add a lot of layers to enjoy the game. If any dev ever reads this it doesn’t even have to be 8, it could be two extra buttons specifically for extra abilities granted by gear or something like that. I just think it would be cool.
You don’t have enough points for more abilities unless you want to nerf the effectiveness of your current abilities. If you want to add more 1 point wonders well that should be fixed by making 1 point wonders not a thing anyway. Shouldn’t feel like you have effective skills with 1 point invested.
Console game first so the lack of buttons would cause issues for the controllers.
There are always the +level to all skills mods on gear. Sure it would not be super strong but being able to have a 1 level utility skill would be nice to have.
They should have made the controls like kingdoms of amalur and various other games. Essentially if you hold the left trigger down then you get access to another 4 abilities
There are some classes and builds that force you to keep certain abilities on your hotbar. For example: necro minion summoning spells must be on your hotbar if you’re not sacrificing them for the passive benefit, otherwise they disappear. So that is 2 out of my 6 keybinds used for spells that didn’t come from my skill tree.
Because a pure minion build isn’t viable, I have to pair it with a builder/spender combo like Bone Splinter/Bone Spear. That now leaves me with 2 keybinds to fit in 4 potential skill slots - a curse, corpse or macabre skills like blood mist or corpse explosion, a cc like tendrils or bone spirit, or an ultimate. I’m playing HC, so it’s going to be a CC and then what do I pick as a 4th?
The point is, being pigeonholed into only 6 keybinds doesn’t feel good. I’d love for a similar system to other ARPG’s where you have modifiers like Cntl, Alt or Shift.
This is always the excuse and it’s really not true in the slightest
6 abilities is purely a design decision
Yeah… Limited keybinds in D3 didn’t feel as bad because when you got bored, a new build was a few key clicks away.
In Diablo 4, it’s the same limits without the freedom to change things easily, and it feels really constrained.
They’ve balanced the game around it though which feels like a bad foundation, but I kind of imagine that it’s locked in now?
I don’t think so. If they introduce loadouts and reasonable skill/paragon reset elixirs then it should be a lot easier to experiment on the fly.
This whole “choices matter” is flat out BS.
Not true, in most cases 1 point is all you need due to diminishing returns on active skills. With the right gear perks it would be great.
It’s just an excuse to put less effort in. They played it very safe with D4. People are tired of the same old formula with 6 key binds. It reduces class complexity unnecessary and undermines the depth of the game.
You can still have more than 6 key binds and keep things relatively simple for the casual audience.
You have 6 skills, potion, dodge, mount, and teleport.
10 hotkey game.
There are choices that matter?
I thought what matters is stacking Vulnerable and Unstoppable… There’s practically no “choice” that matters on the classes I’ve tried so far.
Your one skill slot left you can actually play with basically isn’t what matters to begin with ;_;
I hope they can do something to make it better. More skill slots, easier respecs, multiple build saves… Enough skill points to have more than 6 skills but you have to stop and swap… just… Almost… anything? They could expand the replayability and fun of classes a lot more than what it currently offers, it feels literally designed to prevent that right now and I’m not sure why that is good?
actually, console controller is fully capable of handling 8 skills, really, trust me as a ps5 player, it is NOT a problem.
but the real problem is not skill slots, its how difficult to change builds. give us loadout, may there be associated costs, it’d solve many big problems of the game.
at the moment it is such a hassle to reset the skill tree, paragon boards, gear slots, all together to play a different build. do they want us to have various play-styles or not, because it is so discouraging at the moment. stay on the same build is boring, it discourages players to explore different skills (I said discourage not prevent)
They should have made it for a PC.
But didn’t and the UI and controls are bad.
Gimped for Console , done for cash.
Sounds about right .
You can comfortably have upwards of 40 inputs on controllers. 4 Face Buttons+ 4 DPad + at least 4 Modifiers(RB,LB,LT,RT).
There is no “lack of buttons”.
smh this outdated early 2000s PC snob nonsense.
the number of buttons on a controller has not been an issue for at least 2 console generations.
as far as the OP - 6 skills is fine tbh. I just wish the ultimate skill had its own separate keybind instead of being placed in one of the 6 hotbar slots. That alone would change everything for me.
