Controller support is SO good

The point where this does fall down a bit is with a ground-targeted skill like Teleport or Leap. With the mouse you can teleport to any point you can see on the screen that’s reachable, and on a wide-screen this can be pretty freaking far.

With the controller, Teleport just blips you maybe 20 feet in the direction you’re facing which effectively makes these things different skills on a controller than they are with a mouse. Mostly fine for combat but I would prefer either a larger distance, or actually hold down the button and then target using the right stick (which normally doesn’t really do anything since we don’t have much if any camera control).

Also, at any moment the game is either in Controller or Mouse mode. You can switch instantly by just touching one or the other, but even if you grab the mouse and point (switching you into Mouse mode) and then press the Teleport button on the controler, you still get the controller behavior rather than going to where the mouse pointer was (because you’re out of Mouse mode as soon as you press the controller button I guess).

Also WTB fully rotatable camera view as an Option. Are we not 3D enough for the 3D club?

YOu get used to it. I prefered d3 demon hunter on console tbh. LAst few seasons I ran on switch since portable lol. In addition to irl week of work…I side line as my son’s chaffeur on the weekends lol.

And since it was free to DL and try on on xbox…I did that this weekend once I closed out the 20 on rogue for backpack.

the cross account play works nice btw. the 20+ rogue raised on pc was jsut there there. Nice. so was the sorc and the necro around 5 to 10.

As I see it all that is lost is more accurate placement of some rdps stuff.
I can live with that. In my case I am average gamer who realized I will never break 1000 or even 10000 in ladders lol.

once accepted and said I don’t care about ladder placement anyway I jsut went for ye old complete d3 season items on my own time and pace. all I wanted.

PC keys and mouse would give more control for those who try harder lol. If not a concern well then controller on pc or flat out console may not be all that bad.

SIde note except necro. Tried that on xbox and omg…the pain. the skeleton army didn’t render real time. MOve 5 feet, they blink in. the lag was…sigh worthy. and annoying as hell.

Yeah…this is a feature of many arpg’s now. I found it off its not there, still. Even neocore gets this in on thier arpg. they aren’t exactly a billion dollar company like blizzard.

We should be able to create “Softcore” (as opposed to Normal) characters which never appear on leaderboards but for whom respecs are always free lol.

Its the navigating your inventory and NPC screens part about controllers that kill me. Combat it works well.

This is the biggest thing I want in the game–more so than even getting rid of the MMO trash. Improve the UI, make it friendly for PC keyboard+mouse players. The game was obviously developed for console (or even mobile lul) and ported to PC. But it needs serious improvements for PC. I made a long list of UI complaints around not being built for PC here.

Yeah, at least the menuing part of the PC UI is super odd and unusual and feels terrible in many places. Like when you hit Y (keyboard) you get the two “cards” which are clearly touch-screen-app UI elements, not either Console or PC stuff. It all feels very thrown together because they needed SOMETHING.

Imagine not realizing people have different preferences than you. Good game design gives people choices on how they customize their experience. There is no good reason to restrict players from using wsad if they want to.

How about teleport? Or other targeted skills that are way better to manually use? Teleport distance is always fixed, same with hydras etc. You can have way longer distances for your abilities with mouse… there are drawbacks.

After using a controller I don’t enjoy mouse and keyboard for Diablo. I only use teleport to get out of bad, which works fine on controller. The Hydra placement doesn’t seem to matter either. No matter where I cast Hydra, it kills anything near it.

I’ve done d3 seasons in console/pc.

if trying to be the best of the best of the best…this matters. the placement helps alot for max effort and dps output from keys and mouse.

if one is happy to be a casual…controller get close/good enough, imo.

noting casual is a word with 20000 defintions. MIne for diablo related play is closing out most of the D3 season stuff and not even looking at my rank. In case of D3 HC I am happy to get full d3 set and live to tell the tale no death rerolls lol. I don’t do that last 10% for the hard to get stuff really.

I ran my 20+ rogue on both since the xbox was a free dl this weekend.

PC was k and M, xbox controller.

I’d see me next time around plugging controller into the pc since that is the version I paid for lol.

Controller support really is amazing. The fact that you can switch seamlessly between the two destroys any argument about preference.

Folks are dropping 2 grand and up on a gaming pc, but cant skimp on a controller boggles the mind. What kind of gamer can you call yourself?

Yeah bro, so I just tested that and… you’re 100% right. I did not realize that at all. Teleported way further using my mouse, and could place hydras exactly where I wanted them.

Then I realized something neat. I can use my controller strictly for movement and my mmo mouse for everything else, and so far… it’s working really well. Unless they plan on taking that functionality away, there’s really no reason not to include WASD.

Have you tried the option the separate basic skill and interaction button?

This made me feel a lot better on keyboard. I also like the gamepad play but I can play a lot better on mouse & keyboard on Sorc/Necro because of spell targeting.
But movement annoyed me until I found the option that you can split basic skill and mouse movement. Now with skills on WASDF and right click it plays very good and I actually don’t miss WASD movement anymore. Plays even better like that to be honest.

Interesting.
Kind of makes me interested to see how the game would be played by using a PC Joystick + Mouse. Tbh something like the Wii offhand + Mouse would be amazing.

That’s a great idea. I bet we’ll see people coming up with good options once the game has been launched.
EDIT: Assuming the game will support PC joysticks, wii controllers etc.

There are two downsides I’ve picked up on though:

  1. When using a controller to move and the mouse for everything else, the game is switching between the different control schemes respectively. When you use the controller to move, the game hides the mouse cursor until you move the mouse. Normally you could get around this by enabling a ‘Hardware Cursor’ option in settings, but Diablo IV has no such option.

  2. You cannot use your mouse for anything while moving with the controller at the same time. You have to stop, then use your mouse.

So it’s far from perfect, but it’s something that can still work with a bit of a learning curve, quick reaction time, and a good memory for where your cursor is when it’s hidden.

Oh, that would probably drive me nuts. Hopefully they’ll add true controller/joystick and keyboard as an option and/or WASD.

In grand irony, I’ve used the left half of a dual shock 2 controller + mouse combo in World of Warcraft since 2003 (yes, it worked even during the closed FaF alpha/beta). In modern WoW you can leave the built in controller support disabled and use this type of setup instead. It’s what I had to resign myself to since using the built in controller functionality did exactly what it does here - hides the mouse and prevents you from clicking while moving.

Sadly there is an issue with the UI in WoW where hovering over the action bars in order to click them prevents movement via the controller’s analogue stick. Currently makes WoW unplayable for me. :frowning:
