Hi all
I am a lvl85 druid human storm user.
I have been using a staff i found at lvl54 for a while now but just found an axe with higher item power and decent stats but it isn’t making any sense to me.
Staff
78 all stats
114 will power
2614 dps
Plus other stats that dont matter.
Axe
141 will power
48% core skill dmg
2708 dps
So with axe equipped i have less will power (141 vs staff with 114+78) but an extra 48% core skill dmg. But lightning storm does 5k more dmg, hurricane does 6k more, creeper does 3k more and cataclysm does 2k more.
Im confused how i have less will power with the axe (and 77 less in str, dex, int) but all my skills do more dmg?
I know the axe has 48% core skill but only lightning storm is a core
Am i missing something here?
It’s the 48% core skill damage, that means that with the axe every skill that falls under the core skill umbrella (you can mouse over the skill and look at the tags it has to see if it’s a core skill) are now given an additional 48% damage on top of your raw damage. That’s a huge buff you didn’t previously have so that’s where your extra damage is coming from.

Thanks but that cant be it as all my skills do more dmg but only 1 of them is a core skill.
Huh dunno then the only other thing I can think of is your total DPS is high enough with your offhand as well (presuming you’re using one) that it outweighs the 2614 on the staff alone.
Either way hey at least you’re doing more damage that’s always nice.

Yeah more dmg is always good. I was just confused how something with lower stats could make me do more dmg, but if it was something that always happens and i am missing it then i could be scrapping stuff that is actually worth using/upgrading.
Based on the info you provided the axe has 10% more base damage than the staff before taking any of the affixes into account. 10% might not seem like a big damage increase but all the damage buckets multiply off base damage. 192 vs 141 willpower = 5% additive damage difference.
So with that axe you have 10% higher base damage, 5% lower additive damage, and an additional 48% additive core skill damage. So your non core skills should hit a little harder than with the staff equipped, and your core skills should hit a good bit harder. I am assuming the DPS numbers you provided are not already taking the changes in willpower to account and are weapon DPS numbers, not character sheet DPS numbers.
I am not an expert with the finer points of damage buckets, so someone who is feel free to correct me if necessary. But hopefully this has helped you some.

Thanks zergnation. I need to do more research into this but for now i will use the axe as my skill all do more dmg and after this patch i need more dmg lol
