Anyone else agree that story was really bad?

But Donan, Lorath and the PC didn’t, which is the part that matters lol.

We don’t find that out until afterwards, when we run into them at Caldeum.

I’m indifferent in this matter but Lilith being in the grey area can be a good and a bad thing. Some people liked the simplicity of : seeing demons => slaying demons.
That’s what Diablo always has been.

I enjoyed the story. I didn’t like Donan for most of the story though.

That sounds like they don’t care about the story, which is a wholly different take from “worst story in the trilogy.”

And if that’s the case, you don’t have to pay attention to the story. Every scene is skippable.

Yup, during one stronghold. Then the game forgets you are a necromancer again.

except you can’t even use the usually demons evil/angels good thought process since we’ve seen 3 Angels who are absolutely not “Good”: Maltheal and Inarius in the 100% “not good” and Imperius in the … Good but not for “us” category.

That would depends on your pov.
Some people will like the usual cozy story, it feels “good” to have something you already know of. That’s why we have so many sequels in Hollywood or remakes in video games.
Simplicity isn’t poberty.

The writing in the story suffers from modern age nihilism. If you guys can’t put your finger on exactly why this story felt so …off, it’s because the story was written to blur the lines between good and evil. The result? Confusing hotch-potch of morality and ultimately a meaningless ending.

Not saying it can’t be done well, many authors have done it successfully, but it’s extremely difficult and the writing staff failed miserably here. Speculatively speaking, probably because their personal ideology prevented them from portraying the male angel as good and female demon as evil.

A more compelling narrative could have been told if the Angel could have been portrayed as a tired soul struggling to prove humanity is worthy of Heaven. Instead of a narcissist angel who is trying to prove he is worthy of Heaven. Maybe.

Well they represent different virtue.
Inarius got tortured in hell for millenials and was abandoned by his own.
Malthael became insane.
Imperius is the aspect of wrath, not kindness or anything, wrath. He’s intransigent and deals in absolute.

i actually thought act 1 was really well done.

as for the rest…well… it just went down hill after act 1

you mean like Tyreal has done for the past 2 games? Tyreal is our “tired angelic champion of humanity” (though he’s mortal now) and then there’s the other 2 council members who actually LIKE humanity (idr their names) only Imperius dislikes us cause technically humans are “half demon” at the core lol…

Inarius has NEVER cared for sanctuary…Lilith wanted out of the dumb war so seduced Inarius and they made sanctuary, both got kicked out of their respective realms for it. Lilith went I can use this to get my revenge and end the dumb war Inarius went RARRR YOU I GOT KICKED OUT CAUSE OF YOU (you made the choice idiot not her)

hes just angry he got used

i hate that style of story telling. same as Breath of the Wild and also Tears of Kingdom. instead of playing the story we watching some flashbacks. wow how interesting.

with the March to Hell cinematic. it looks insane and when you encounter the position ist a boring 5m wide way. the map doesnt even match the cinematic.

that was one of the stupidst death in a videogame of all time.

The game is still by and large that. It just has some meat around it. Lilith is still the bad person, and the game doesn’t force you to contend with her perspective and alignment for about 95% of the game.

I haven’t seen a single piece of storytelling in like 10 years that people have unanimously loved. There’s a YouTube dissertation about how every piece of pop culture is trash. There’s a tweet with thousands of likes dumpstering just about anything.

In a culture of people terminally online, where everyone is an expert in what good storytelling is, of course there are tons of people that thought this was ‘trash’ lmao

Was the story great? Not really, but it’s also not terrible either, It’s not even that its bad, just highly predictable. Also “worst in the trilogy” are we all of a sudden pretending that D3 doesn’t exist now?

The story was objectively the best in the series. You are actively wrong. The story was about LILITH not Inarius. Either you’re just blatantly lieing and here hating for no reason, or you genuinely just didn’t play any diablo beforehand and just blindly think their stories were any good.

Anyone else agree that story was really bad?

I don’t. I’m not saying it’s Tolkien or Sanderson. But I would say it’s better than Twilight or 50 Shades or Rings of Power or Gotham Knights or Batwoman or literally anything Kethleen Kenedy has been a part of.

“Anyone who doesn’t agree with my opinion has low standards”
:+1:

He has a god complex. He’s not a deep character. Literally all interactions with him, he’s insufferable and makes even the most obnoxious narcissist look like Mother Theresa.

90% of all stories told where the hero is trying to catch up to the villain. This doesn’t inherently make a story good or bad.

I liked it tbh, especially some cinematics where very nice. Also the open ending doesn’t bother me because that’s what diablo always was, an open ending. Never full closure.

But you don’t have to like it, that’s your opinion. But that’s all it is, your opinion…

I don’t really feel it in D4 but again, as I said I’m indifferent in the matter, I like both simple and complex stories. It’s all about how you tell them.
For exemple Lord of the Rings is really simple, evil guy is back and they have to destroy the ring. It’s about the journey, not the destination.
