A very silly idea that could work: Ranks

So… this is the idea:

Instead of calling the difficulties torments 1-2-3-etc, call them as if they were ranks.
Bronze/Silver/Gold 1, 2, 3, ETC.

I have noticed that “how” the difficulty is presented plays a very important role in how it is perceived.

For example, very few like the idea of a Torment 5, but many like the idea of a mindcage that increases the difficulty of Torment 4.

So… stopping calling them “torments” or “difficulties” might actually work.

This has to be one of the silliest topics I’ve ever done and yet, the one I’m most right about.

Why brain, why…?

Ohh ranks are nice ideas. I want always visible Playerranks for Paragon Levels.
1-50 “Filthy Peasant”
50 - 100 “Isnogud”
100 - 150 “Amateur Warrior”
150 - 200 “1%” (done)
200 - 250 “Poor Soul”
250 - 299 “Fake Princess”
300 “Honorable Gentle(wo)man”

OK sure.

Rank 1 = Casual (same lawnmower concept as what we have in D4 today)
Rank 2 = Normal (same as Rank 1 but with a bit more risk, armor and resist actually matters)
Rank 3 = Advanced (same as rank 2 but now mobs will be able to stun/freeze and such unless you spec into gear/skills that mitigate)
Rank 4 = Ironman (best gear & skillful play required with added boss mob mechanics etc + all the other stuff)

I don’t get it. If it’s the same, why change? Also I’m not a big fan of bronze to gold ranks, it’s not League of Legend, and beside the difficulty, there’s no players ranks position currently. Though, if you still wanna change, here my proposition:
Rank 1 = Pikachu
Rank 2 = Casual
Rank 3 = Fair enough
Rank 4 = Now we are talking
Rank 5 = How dare you?
Rank 6 = Chuck Norris

Clear pit 150 with no snapshots; get a golden ticket to play Chuck Norris mode lol

A rose by any other name…

Seriously, why? What’s the point?

That’s the silly part… it’s because it works.

People prefer an item that increases the difficulty instead of increasing the difficulty… The result is the same, but the feelings are different.

If I understand, you want that difficulty increase itself with player level… that’s not the same at all. I see two bad sides effects with this:

  1. monsters will be always the same difficulty, as it increase with player at same time, so in a sense, it suppress all the difficulty, it will be neutralized in a way. So quite a monotonous gameplay.
  2. There will be no more possibilities for some players to play at an easier difficulty just to have some fun with a weak but funny build, and no more possibilities for hard gamers to play at a very hard difficulty but from level 1.

Cat…before you get sanctioned…

Pussy: Most commonly, it is used as a noun with the meaning “cat”, “coward”, or “weakling”. Nothing to sanction here. Of course I don’t mean the vulgare one. And so many words have double sense nowadays… I can’t avoid every words.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy

Maybe I can use another word… like… pikachu, padawan, trainee… whatever.

I’m not saying that, at least not in this topic (if you take something from another topic out of context, it’s normal for you to understand that).

The proposal is simply a name change… As silly as it sounds.

I like the fixed difficulty better. All monsters equally difficult on one difficulty.

In the campaign it could be different, but that’s another topic.

Moderators use personal judgment. If you find yourself with the wrong mod, you’re going to get into trouble.
Also, discussing this itself is against the rules… so it’s better not to insist on these things.

A radical concept: the difficulty automatically scales with your character’s power level and damage output. There are no more world tiers, and everyone on the server is segregated appropriately.

Also, the clowns who AFK in Inferno Hordes get automatic one-week bans.

It’s the (very minor) amount of difficulty customization players like, not the name.

It’s why such apparatus in other games are popular and why such endgame features are amongst the most requested here.

Too radical, I would dare say… and you are the second to say it, so I hope it is not what others see in the topic.

It wouldn’t work as well without having clear goals. The different difficulties help to set goals, while establishing a defined path.

However, people familiar with other games may interpret the difficulties as an option rather than the path to follow.

I believe that personalizing your experience is something that everyone wants.

The problem with difficulties is that they are not only part of customization, but part of the experience, part of the journey.

Changing the names to make it clearer that the idea is for you to follow this path, should have a big impact.

They are not “difficulties”. They are not “options”. They are the game… the Endgame.

(Maybe it’s too complicated?.. you have to see the abstractness of the situation.)

Change the difficulty names to Hellhound symbols and then change attack power stat to Hellhound power or hound power for short. How many hellhounds that you can defeat per second. Did I do it right?

I don’t know, does it feel better? If you do, then yes… I guess…
:person_shrugging:

i dont really see a need for this. only really explanation is that OP thinks the names sound better. Thats pretty much the category of people thinking this is a “build your game”- toolkit.

Some things you just have to accept.

I mean really…

Please rename sorcerers to wizards because “factually” people think thats a lot better (factually meaning = because i like the word wizard more.) That would greatly increase the classes popularity… /s

I dont need a torment 5, neither do i need an… idk. emerald tier.

Those of us who understand how the game works don’t see the point.
But not everyone is like that.

It’s like with the necromancer… we all know he’s not a necromancer.

But someone who controls skeletons is often known as a necromancer, so he is given that name officially just to make it better understood.

I say that the same should be done with difficulties. It will not change our perception, but it will change that of those who do not understand.
