Agreed, I think they will keep the original order of the prime evils of Mephisto, Diablo and Baal. Having no Diablo in a Diablo game feels off. I’m fairly confident they will add a holy warrior next, whether it’s a Paladin, Crusader, Cleric, etc.
Second expansion will usher in the return of Baal. It’s only been 50 years since the defeat of Diablo/the Prime Evil & Malthael. Diablo will be in the third expansion.
That’s true, but unless Diablo is in the 2nd expansion, which would be required at minimum to round out the story arc, it forces a 3rd. Despite even the many early failings of D3 that led to canning the 2nd expansion and dispersing its contents over a year or so for free (necro excepted), the sales were through the roof, so that was a choice not based so much on market viability as something else, likely the fact that they had a poor structure that was very difficult to build on and they knew it. They already said they had “multiple” expansions for D4 in the works more or less at launch, and they’ve repeatedly stated that they will be sticking with the game and doing releases for it longer than any previous titles due to the live-service model. They make money hand-over-fist with this property whether the quality is there or not, so it wouldn’t make much sense for them to backtrack on those decisions.
They were knee deep in the 2nd full expansion for D3 when the bean counters came in and told them it was canceled. It didn’t make sense to anyone actually developing the game to cancel that expansion, but it didn’t matter.
According to the financial results of Activision Blizzard in investor relations press release, the suits are happy the Diablo franchise is setting new quarterly records. They will continue to release Diablo expansions as they are printing money at this point and told their investors they will deliver major new features for many years to come…
Blizzard
In the second quarter, Blizzard segment revenue grew over 160% year-over-year and operating income more than tripled year-over-year, each setting new quarterly records, driven by the launch of Diablo IV.
As of the end of the second quarter, Diablo IV had sold-through more units than any other Blizzard title at an equivalent stage of release. Over 10 million players experienced Diablo IV in June, playing for over 700 million hours, and retention trends for the title are particularly strong.
Launch of Diablo IV marks the start of a live service plan designed to deeply engage the Diablo community and create opportunities for continued player investment. July 20 sees the release of Diablo IV’s first quarterly season, Season of the Malignant, bringing new themes, content, and fresh gameplay to the community. Blizzard’s teams are also making strong progress on expansions that will deliver major new features and continue game’s acclaimed narrative for many years to come.
Sure, but all that can change if VoH tanks. All indicators now are good, I agree. It’s still too early to say though that there will definitely be a 2nd and 3rd expansion at this point.
Well first, the 2nd expac will most probably not be the last one, so the returtn of Diablo has no chance. Second, we will most likely get the kingdom of Westmarch and surrounding areas first where, yes paladins settled down.
I respectfully disagree, I think the odds of Diablo returning in the 2nd exp is fairly high and consistent with the prime evil order of appearance in previous titles.
Probably all the way to the North (Mount Arreat and some bits of nearby area maybe)
The main villain would probably be Baal but can’t know for sure, class will probably be Legionaire (Shield-Bearer Fighting class that primarily uses Javelins, Swords, Spears and Glaives)
Can have a bit of Holy component to it but think primary mechanic will be mainly about precision and dealing with bigger targets with more ease (“disarm”, “wound”, “counterstrike” or “empowered strike”)
If they were smart, they’d introduce him sooner than later and have him grow in power, causing mayhem, as the expansions progress. We don’t have to kill him right away. Could be traveling like in D2, leaving chaos in his wake. Could even have world events and gameplay mechanics from it, like random towns become full of demons and the townspeople become enemies. Then just have a stalemate or even a boss fight where we lose but survive.
