Mechanic-wise, maxroll is usually correct because they test it personally. However, they are somewhat lazy at testing everything, neglect the existence of some skills or only use blunt justification of leader boards.
For them, the only highest performing builds at the leader boards exist and rest are fillers. Game is actually a little more deeper than peak moments they try to imitate at their guides and anyone reading them would think otherwise. Game actually punishes low sustain and every maxroll simulator is clocked for highest damage output as if it’s not an elusive moment that doesn’t align in real combat as often as you’d like.
Going back to the topic at hand, in my opinion mechanically maxroll guides provide correct information just, it has a rather narrow vision because, in my opinion again; it tries to cater casual and dedicated players both. Guides written there usually provide good information for a start and even provide in-depth explanation, but when you ask a question about a different combination you won’t find an answer. The reasoning behind is to mitigate loot hunt duration or requirements, for getting into Greater Rifts the quickest.
Giving an example, related to the thread; WD has a skill named Wall of Death and only WoD- Communing with Spirits were considered “viable enough” since a few years. Nowadays, people or at least the guide writers found out about WoD- Wall of Zombies was a legit crowd control utility comparable to Piranhas- Piranhado. All the while, entire Set Dungeon of Helltooth, which hardly changed along the decade, were based on players using WoD- Wall of Zombies and they just found out about it a few months ago.
Similarly, they’re just revealing the potential of Sacrifice- Provoke the Pack in their guides slowly, and yet they still ignore Mass Confusion. When they’re that slow at finding or revealing things, I would rather test things myself.
If you decide to return, you can fix it, have fun with Helltooth ZB until then. You need to apply some tweaks for Zunimassa if you are following the maxroll guide for it, which is only optimized for highest damage output at a fickle peak moment with way low sustain for damage buffs. I think the Zunimassa’s guide of maxroll is rather superficial but what do I know? I don’t push leader boards with it. Regardless, if peak moment relies on so many different variables that will diminish your ability to identify and pick priority targets before you get clustered in a corner.
Try equipping Dagger of Darts, Lakumba’s and Mantle of Channeling, toss Homunculus at the Cube slot and include Sacrifice- Provoke the Pack and Firebats- Vampire Bats in your active skills. With this setup you can replace Depth Diggers by using FnR until you loot a good one, but it will lack the bursts from CoE without DD pants and Zuni ring. As Sacrifice will replace Fetish Army as a wild card, you might need Fetish Sycophants passive or Belt of Transcendence for them.
