I know ethereals arent going to last into the postseason, but what happens with them? Should i salvage them now before they disappear?
I don’t think anyone know for certain, so if you want the materials, then I would salvage them all just before the season ends, or on the last day that you intend to play the season.

i dont exctly collect them. ony the right ones for my builds. everything else i salvage. salvaging doesnt give much, saving stash space mostly. death breaths is easy to get now with new followers system and legendaries raining so i’m not desperate for souls either. having a few more rift keys is nice though. saves about 2 minutes 
if salvaging an ethereal wouldve get you a bounty mats pack, that would be wow. everything else is so-so.
also, i dont play non-season so if i forgot to salvage ethereals in the end i won’t cry. there are plenty of mats i dont use there.
the only way we can keep them is unlocking the transmog.

With how easy the Puzzle Ring method is for acquiring the transmog, I’d definitely go that route, just to get it checked off the list and have them available in the future.

We know exactly what will happen to them, because we tested the end of season roll-over on the PTR…
Short version
Salvage them just before season ends so you get the materials and any gems you may have socketed in them otherwise you’ll just lose the items and any socketed gems.

I found very nice Ethereal pieces but can’t bring myself to play nowadays. Shame that I will lost them in a week or two. I failed to find a comparable weapon with perfect rolls yet and I know it won’t drop for a long time.
I am betting people are thinking what I am thinking: If I salvage my awesome ethereals, Blizzard will change their minds at the last second and let us keep them!

Season 25: what happens to my soul shards when season ends?
Soul Shards and Hellforge Embers only drop in Seasonal play, and will not transfer to your non-seasonal character when the season ends.

So, best to salvage them for the mats.
Can you salvage a soul shard? You can’t salvage other gems.
I tried in PTR, you can pretty much salvage Soul Shards. Shards turn into gems instead of dozens of high grade crafting material unlike Ethereals.
