Ultrawide Screen Black Bars? Realy?

Wait you didn’t do that on your light sorc by getting her stuck in the corner and teleporting off screen from her with her name locked on (btw you can do the same thing in pvp with name lock)? Nothing wrong with having widescreen in this game. You legit cant even make a good argument to counter this. Stop searching for a needle and a haystack (ex. pvp). I played the original d2 when it first came out and have hundreds of hours on it. In no way will widescreen “ruin” the game. Its a great addition to a 2021 updated game with its amazing graphics

seriously though. black bars on the side is lazy and tacky. and as far as advantages “bandwidth” can give similar advantages. People like Dream however like to get off on being a troll.

cuz there is no pvp in d3?

Ultrawide users wouldn’t have to acknowledge those big black bars on their screens and everyone would be happy.

I didnt notice the bars after the first 30 seconds of playing.

Anyway, There is a video of a guy showing the advantages an ultrawide gives you in PVE. Obviously some things can be fixed like the range on teleport or spells, but what cant be fixed is the fact that you can see monsters from further away, hit them, and they dont come attack you. you can position them on the edge of your screen and just pick them off.

well damn…sucks either way I guess. Just wish they had a better solution

Okay, so add fog of war for area outside the normal 16:9 aspect ratio viewing area.

In the fog you can’t:

  • Cast spells (Teleport, Blizzard)
  • See Monsters/Loot
  • See undiscovered terrain

In the fog you can:

  • See terrain that has passed into viewable area previously
  • Shoot projectiles into it

Big, ugly black bars is not a modern solution. Developers that ship titles that don’t work, work properly, or don’t make use of UW monitors this late into their existence have no excuse.

Hell, even if they don’t use the space for viewable, playable area and don’t put in FOW, they could use the space for other things, such as:

  • Inventory
  • Mercenary Sheet
  • Character Sheet
  • Skill Sheet
  • Trade Window
  • Vendor Window
  • Automap
  • Chat

All of the above would free up the viewable game space for… the game. UW players could then feel like their monitor isn’t totally wasted/unused.

good suggestions!!! I think the fog of war would work. Using the area for other things could be problematic/bothersome for smaller screens though so it would have to be a toggle.

Yeah, probably only an option where there is enough screen real estate to actually house the menu/item. For those with small black bars on the left and right, I would rather see some thematic borders there than black bars.

Alternatively, for resolutions that can’t fit the menus on the side, they could at least use the full resolution when you have a menu open so you lose less actual game space when something is open.

Last note on these UW that aren’t too ultra – monsters do engage from off screen, its just not very far from off screen. Perhaps the resolution is too small at that point to bother limiting the viewable play area.

To blizzard’s credit, they do have a nice fade to black thing going on at the periphery, as things stand.

I have a 5120x1440 monitor, so literally half my monitor is just black bars. It sucks lol.

I would love to have inventory always open, but opening into the unused, black space so I could keep track of inventory potions and space. You could make a really nice auto map section and have it open into the black space. etc.

Imagine thinking a game without any Ranked play of any kind needs Ultrawide removed for “balance” reasons.

Give us back the correct scaling please.

Well, its not entirely accurate to say there isn’t any ranked play. There is a competitive Ladder race to 99.

And having a huge screen where you can see the whole level layout and cast spells into it is certainly an advantage in that race. It also will degrade non competitive gaming experiences. Imagine going into a game with someone who can see across the map and they completely outpace you, beat you to loot, etc.

On some occasions it will be good (they can get the party where they want to go faster with TPs).

On the other hand, it could be junky, as the game will shift toward sniping off screen, inactive enemies. I believe that is pretty objectively bad for the overall health of the game.

I think a fog of war idea would be best, to shroud inactive monsters from being sniped (play the game the way its meant to be), and also prevent teleporting from Chaos Sanctuary seal to the next, and farming diablo 5x faster than someone else can (Don’t provide a huge advantage to farming efficiency and ladder progression via what monitor you use).

So, even PvE in D2 has competitive elements to it, and in a game built on trading what you find, farming efficiency is a huge thing (farming and pvp are the only end game of D2, really, and an ultra wide can hugely benefit either type of play)

End game D2 for me was always put on the shelf until I reinstall to play over.
why would anyone “farm” or “Grind” after the story is done what the hell for? "look I’m the most powerful character locked at the end of this world with no future stories to tell… I think ill go find a weaker player and smash them that would be fun… sorry move on.
Literally, blizzard build better games that are for this.
don’t treat D2 like its an MMORPG it never was
infact unless they are planning addon expansions for d2rm The balancing of anything away from the old game is a joke.
this was sold specifically as a Graphical enhancement which means WIDE SCREEN SUPPORT.

If you played diablo 2 through the story, you experienced a small fraction of the game. That is fine, you do you.

However. Most of the people who played Diablo 2 online did a lot more than that, and decisions should not be made to develop the game assuming that no players will actually explore most of the game.

Seriously? if you cared about exploring the game you would want to be able to see it in the biggest best hardware you can not on a monitor the size of a tv from the '90s.

16:9 aspect ratio is very common on today’s monitors. You can play the game at higher resolutions, but the aspect ratio is limited to 16:9. For example, play the game in 4K Resolution on your 85 inch TV and there are no black bars.

The reason they added black bars is because of the way the game is coded – monsters do not activate and attack unless there is a player within certain range, even if they are hit.

That is a flat out lie, have you watched people playing the alpha on SUW. monsters worked fine. And even if it were not a complete fabrication, the solution is to derender the monsters after a certain distance like a fog of war.

lmao its not, a lie.

It will take you to a timestamp that shows exactly what I am talking about – Notice the group of Dark Hunters standing around doing nothing in the bottom left. They can be shot and sniped before they are even activated.

The aggro range of monsters is pretty big, but its not as big as you can view with a 32:9 monitor like the one in the video, or the one I currently use.

Also note how terrible it looks when the game fails to load a tile as you walk, getting that ugly empty space. That bit breaks immersion a lot for me.

And yes, the solution would be fog of war, which I already suggested. I have not and never will say that the game shouldn’t try to make use of ultrawide monitors. I just don’t think you should be able to view the whole landscape, the monsters, etc all at once for balance and graphical fidelity reasons.

they were able to change the range at which the mobs aggroed for 16:9 they can just up the radius for higher aspect ratios.

ultrawide screen will be a big problem for pvp :frowning:

Ok ill accept that the earlier alpha didn’t have the range patch yet, but they fixed that so now Let me show you what I now see
I can’t post links so you will have to remove the spaces

There is 50% of my screen that is just a solid black pit.
it looks like feck. not even a nice border graphic, not even useable for dragging the inventory window or map into its literally dead space.
at this point id be ok with just having a dedicated chat window there But this dead space and the acceptance of it is just insanity,
