The Definitive Approach to Diablo 4 Itemization

Regarding nerfing - nobody likes to have a build or an item they invested a lot of time into acquiring and setting up to be nerfed. To start up and find your character weaker than the day before is definitely an un-fun result.

Regarding glass cannons - in most of the article the OP advocates choice and viability of different builds. There are people like me who enjoy running glass cannons and not building for survivability…best defense is a good offense. Let the game be designed to allow different play styles to be viable, including glass cannon.

POE currency and trading - not a panacea. I love POE. I would love it a lot more if trading was less cumbersome and currency a little less complicated. D4 doesn’t need to be another POE.

Speaking of currency, please don’t make dozens of different currencies with very limited uses. Seems like in many MMOs they use that to fill up inventory space to force players to buy additions to. It seems like that’s also used to channel players’ activities grinding different currencies. Another un-fun game mechanic in my view.

The way I see NMRs being used.

If Normal Items are to have more sockets lets say a max of six and No affixes they become an item you want to keep as you can make them powerful.
Magic Items will have a max of 4 sockets and one or two affixes still keepers as with the right combo of affixes and socket-able items they can be made powerful.
Rare Items are now limited to a max of two sockets but three affixes so the possible balance is built in with the right mix you still can make a powerful item.

Then if Affixes are set for each of the NRMs so that you will never get the same affixes in a Normal that is on a Magic or Rare then with some smart item based builds the players can tweek builds for different content, Boss Farming, Dungeon, PvP or world events.

Not looking at these affixes to be locked in but as an example.

Not all items will get sockets.

Normal has max of six sockets or what ever blizzard has as the max amount
Normal has the following affixes, reduced damage from elites, magic find, plus 1-2 to skill type ie: AoE, Projectile and so on.

Magic has max of four or one to two less then what ever blizzard has as the max amount
Magic has the following affixes, all the different resistances, light radius, plus 1-2 class skills

Rare has max of two sockets, so the current runeword work with them.
Rares get the ever the more powerful affixes and what ever blizzard has as the its limit, say all resist, bypass say 10-20% resist.

With Legendary and Mythic Affixes only being used on the items blizzard puts them on.

This way most if not all items will be viable to be used in builds then its not just looking for some Legendary to finish a build in the first few days after getting to max level/late game, because it gives me 1500% more damage, Grrr Power Creep.

Legendary items should make for maybe unexpected way to change things up, yes more powerful but to to the point where next season or patch they need to make the next set of Legendary items more powerful then the last.

Again Grrr Power Creep.

Blizzard knows what they’re doing. Their vision for D4 is unquestionable

Exactly!

There is a range of “build planning”, where you still want to create a plan but not feel forced to maximize the plan. Just something that works and is good enough.

Let us plan while not making the 1% difference at the very top of item strength make a major difference in gameplay.
