Closing a rift cancels many aura type skills, not limited to Shadow Power and not S21-only, and not a bug.
The minions of rare (yellow) monster are white monster but have some of the affixes of the rare monster. And therefore, they could have range ability.
So, being “a white mob” doesn’t concluded to be “no elite affixes”. You need to be more specific.

It doesn’t have to be an elite to cause problems with Shadow Impale build. You probably tackled a monster that can deflect projectiles.

As TimberWolf said, there are mobs can reflect projectiles. These ability doesn’t show on the banner. I know two types of mobs do that. They are not range attacker and they can be white mobs.
In addition, projectile doesn’t restrict to “impale” and DH. All classes have some kinds of projectile skills.
I didn’t say that you are a “noob”. And I don’t think “noob” is bad.
I just told you to be more specific. “(insert monster with no ranged attacks here)” is useless in a bug report. It doesn’t give any information. Please read the pinned post How to Write a Good Bug Report - #3
