D1 initially was planned as a turn based RPG and then when the turn-based mechanics were removed, it became the first Action RPG ever.

Actually, The Legend of Zelda takes that crown. Simplistic, yes, but it had both action (your control of the character) and RPG (gear/life/item upgrades) elements.
