Quick Suggestions to enhance the game a bit more, add offhand slot and Let Ram’s Gift be used on it :

AMETHYST:
Helm - 23% Life
Other - 280 Vitality
Weapon - +28,000 Life Per Hit
Offhand - +35,000 Life Per Second

DIAMOND :
Helm - Reduces Cooldown of all skills by 12.5%
Other - +78 Resistance to All Elements
Weapon - +40% damage versus elites
Offhand - Reduce damage over time taken by 20%

EMERALD:
Helm - +12.5% Attack Speed
Other - +280 Dexterity
Weapon - +130% CHD
Offhand - Increase dodge chance by 12.5%

RUBY:
Helm - +41% Experience
Other - +280 Strength
Weapon - +50% Area Damage
Offhand - Increase block chance by 15%

TOPAZ:
Helm - Reduces all resource costs by 12.5%
Other - +280 Intelligence
Weapon - Deal 100% more damage to enemies with over 75% health.
Offhand - +38,000 Thorns Damage

The boost from main stat or resist wouldn’t be as good as other dps stats that come on offhands such as crit chance on some pieces of gear. There are more than enough good stats that a socket wouldn’t do any good. In fact it would hurt more than help, even though it would add an extra stat. I think that you would have to greatly increase the regular gem’s power before you would get a good result from such a thing.

That’s why I suggested letting Ram’s Gift work on it, so the socket doesn’t take away from what we currently have.
