You do not need to have already created a seasonal Hero before running the Challenge rift in order to be able to collect the cache on a seasonal hero.

I think this is new… I seem to remember several posts by « angry » players (ok, perhaps not angry… but really frustrated players) that couldn’t get their seasonal hero to collect the Challenge Rift reward; the answer to these players had always been that, not only did they have to create their seasonal hero BEFORE doing the Challenge Rift, but also needed to start a game with it. For example, in the “New + Returning Player’s Guide” for Barb, it suggests to:

Leveling 1-70

1. Create Seasonal Character, log into Adventure Mode, Take Follower weapon, equip your cosmetics and pet (F1) then log out
2. Complete the Challenge Rift solo or with a group
3. Set game to Master, log in, and gamble Blood Shards

Perhaps this is Blizzard’s reaction to this issue ???
