My wife can only use controller

My wife can only use a controller due to cerebral palsy and diablo 3 is her favorite. We played hours upon hours on xbox when it first came out and years after. We swapped to PC gaming ages ago. We play Diablo 2 and enjoyed diablo 4 when it first came out but my wife would really like to revisit our Diablo 3 days. However, we no longer have our Xbox’s and only have computers. How can i get it to where she can play diablo 3? I know there is a way in steam and another program that may make it possible but also may cause her to get banned? After my transplant, we are now both disabled and locked to PC with a small game budget so just buying a console is out of the question, plus we would need two. Her birthday has come and gone but i was hoping to figure it out for a bit of a late surprise. My primary concern is her getting banned from online and us being able to play together if i use a third party program. Thanks for any information and advice in advance.

D3 wasn’t designed on PC with the controller in mind, and it was never something the devs planned to include. I wanted to get my wife into D3 but the lack of controller support means, alas, only D4 and hopefully D2R.

There are third party things you can use but from what I have read, it can be janky. The D3 experience on the console is pretty awesome, as it was adapted with controller in mind. Thism of course, means you have to have both console and D3 game on said console.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply. D4 is now an entirely different game then d2 and d3 and while we did enjoy it, it is no longer the kind of experience we enjoy. While i am an old soul and grew up with d2, the wife likes the modern play of d3 and it is an awesome game. I understand that d3 console and pc are handled in entirely different ways, i am hoping to find a way to use a controller with almost no jank and no ban.

You can always try this:

Try the Steam input method. It can work really well if you have the patience to configure it. That is like a mini game.

I recommend some repeaters for accessibility.

I’ve played hundreds of hours on a gamepad, hundreds more multiboxing, and no bans.

Just because you have no been banned, does not mean it is allowed and will not result in a ban at some point. I wish blizzard would weigh in on something, anything D2 related… so we could get some idea of what is and is not allowed.

The only thing they have specifically said was “One key press>One action”. You will have to accept anecdotal evidence from players who have used alternate input methods. D3 was designed to use KB&M. Consoles are a different animal, and they have never responded to the many requests over the years for controllers on PC.

Weak excuse:

  • Consoles are X86 (the code can’t be that different from console to copy over to PC considering D3 started as a PC base)
  • Path of Exile 1 not only started PC-only (D3 already had console aspirations around launch), but also added controller support on PC, on the 1st game (was added after PoE2 early-access I think), on a F2P game with less history (Blizzard can certainly afford to do it)

To be honest, I’m sure many would return to D3 if they added controller support… Damn I’d be happy if they just gave us the option to install the console version to our PC.

It’s a monetized game though, they can potentially recoup the investment. D3 will not, so for the company it’s essentially just burning money.

this is really a tired take. Blizzard can do something for fans. If fans can find the drive to make mods and all this for games on their own free time, professional studios can get paid to patch accessibility too. You act as if costs themselves logically make what’s being asked for unreasonable or something.

Honestly imo the fact that the game is over 10 years old / already has sequels on the market is a better explanation as to why it won’t happen - or - at least as to why it won’t happen until we *hopefully get a D3 Remaster at some point later… once we’re all on quantum chips or something.

It’s a multi billion dollar company. That alone should tell you they’re in it for the cash, not to make friends.

@NightValor, @TH3WR417H:

Something to consider is going the Linux route on PC. Steam works great there. Google search the following without quotes “is there an xbox emulator for Linux”. The google AI has a large blurb on the subject. However, that is not the end of your leg work. I suggest searching youtube for tutorials on xbox emulators on Linux and heading over to Linux_Gaming subreddit ==> https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming

There is a large welcoming and newbie friendly community there, and migrating to Linux is relatively painless. The biggest pain to overcome is fear and misinformation. If this option interests either of you, let me know and I would be happy to steer you in the right direction based on your:

  • needs
  • PC hardware
  • software you run currently in Windows

If Blizzard was worried about investment, they wouldn’t force D3 always-online still and lessen server load :stuck_out_tongue:

Code’s already mostly done with X86 consoles, and PC players paid for it.
