Loot boxes - Ultimate form of company greed?

Unless D4 won’t have a monthly fee or any pay2win options then I’m fine with it.

Loot boxes, or some other form of in game gambling, have been around for decades. Simply go find yourself a “Free to Play” game and just check out the game store, or look into upgrading mechanics. Triple AAA games just adopted some of the money-making tactics F2P games have been using.

Hell, if you think about it, arcade games are the physical manifestation of loot boxes, and they have been around for a very long time. I remember playing Tekken 4 in an arcade as a kid with it only taking me a few seconds to realize the game was completely rigged before walking away.

As for why, well, that I am not sure, but from personal experience it is the thrill of seeing whether or not your gamble will pay off, that’ll you’ll get that item or upgrade you want. Then when you do not get it, you tell yourself “Alright, maybe next time. Ah, maybe again. Huh, well maybe if I spend a bit more.”. It can also be, depending on the game, whether using money gives you an edge over other players. The pressure of playing against cash users can be quite heavy, and will drive you off, harden yourself to push further without spending a cent, or simply give in. The first and last happen more often though.

For games like Overwatch and HotS it can be just wanting to have that new shiny thing that you do not have, which can be just as strong of a drive as wanting to improve your character. The drive to want to not be bland and to stand out, to have the latest shiny thing released right here right NOW despite knowing it’ll be there for a while. Unless of course the shiny thing in question is on “sale” or a “Limited Time Offer.” then that just pours gas on the fire. It’s the same mindset that gets people worked up on black Friday, when a new console is released, new game is released, ect.

I agree, this is the problem. If they straight out ban loot boxes only, the companies will just change the wording and distribution enough, so it is outside the law. Similar to how they have made several laws on unsolicited phone calls, only to have the telemarketers change the way they do things just enough to be outside the new law.

For many of these contests and giveaways, odds of winning are available, one thing most loot boxes don’t have that I am aware of. I would almost bet that many of the shady companies that sell loot boxes put the most treasured cosmetics behind heavy weighting. Their goal isn’t to sell one loot box to a customer, it is to sell dozens or hundreds, otherwise they would just sell the cosmetic. If they are going to put in a law regulating loot boxes, it will need to have odds of winning in it.

It is sad they have to go with unethical predatory loot boxes to make money then just outright sell the cosmetics. Sure, they will be making slightly less money, but it would give them a far less sleazy reputation. Loot boxes along with other shady practices are the reasons so many customers don’t trust those big companies. 8 years ago, Blizz had a great reputation. When they put something out, people bought it blindly because they new it was going to be quality. Now, many customers are leery to pre-order things because of the shady decisions they have made the last few years.

All in all, loot boxes are a sleazy, unethical practice. If they make a D4, and they put loot boxes in it, they won’t have me as a customer. I hope they have the balls to show some integrity and just sell the cosmetics rather than throw more gambling into the game.

Yes. We should not support any game allowing loot boxes or other casino like stuff. Children who play such games are at risk of becoming addicted to that type of unethical monetization.

There’s a sucker born every minute. Those companies count on it.

Interesting they banished the thread into obscurity. Which is probably safe to say they intend to do it.

Our last hope is EU commission cut that crap from gaming.

Either of those things will kill D4. The customer base doesn’t want a subscription and we certainly don’t want p2w which is what paid lootboxes with gear will be.

Players have indicated they only want to pay for cosmetics and are ok with paying for extra character slots and storage space if and only if a reasonable amount is given in the base purchase.

Except that now the population is more or less aware of it and has the ability to bring it to the highest forms of court. #allthingsend

My uncle was in that movie. Thought the star from dexter did a good villain. Not great, but good.

“Gamer” is one of the most underestimated modern films. A below 6 imdb rating clearly shows the inability of the viewer to grasp what the film is about.
