I'm a bit confused

Hello,

I having been playing Diablo 3 as the monk (story mode, not seasonal) for about a week now with a friend. Currently we’re at the hidden camp and on ‘The Black Soulstone’ quest. I decided to make a new character to play by myself and I chose the barbarian on seasonal and adventure. When I joined the game though, I appeared to still be in Act II and in the exact same area as my other character. Since it appears that the progress of my monk has transferred over to my barbarian, if I do things with my barbarian will it transfer over to my monk? I don’t want to progress at all without my friend, so I just want to make sure I can play freely without affecting my monk.

The progress in campaign (story) mode is per character.

Adventure mode has no story progress at all. The login town is random every hour. You can always teleport to other town of any act using the map.
