Apparently Adria had marked Diablo’s soul before the Dark Wanderer had left Tristram, that’s what had allow Diablo’s essence to be sent into the Black Soulstone. The only ones that I’m curious about is how Adria had marked Mephisto’s and Baal’s essence. Mephisto’s soulstone was shattered at the anvil, which meant he should’ve been banished before Adria had the chance of marking his essence. Unless there were remnants of Mephisto’s essence that lingered in Kurast that Adria was able to use.
Then Baal’s even more puzzling because he died within the Worldstone chamber, and while his soulstone was never shattered, both his body and soulstone were obliterated when Tyrael had destroyed the Worldstone, thus sending him back to Hell in order to respawn. So I’m honestly not sure how Adria had even found any essences of Baal in order to mark.
So long story short, if a great demon has their essence marked then they can still be recovered even if they were sent to the Black Abyss via the destruction of an angelic device that they were sealed within, even if said device was destroyed at the Hellforge.
