Diablo II: Resurrected - Windows 7 Support

Diablo II: Resurrected has NO Windows 7 support. Really?
Is it so difficult to add it to the game? The game runs with RTX and DLSS?
I will be very disappointed if it turns out to be true. I will just skip the game.

P.S. Please, don’t need to write about the end of support period for Windows 7 from Microsoft or anything about upgrade to Windows 10. Thanks!

It’s likely to be a case of ‘it’ll work but don’t expect us to support it if you run into problems’

Interestingly, windows 8.1 isn’t supported either and that OS is still supported by microsoft. But there are even less people using 8.1 than 7

So it’s probably not worth the effort to ensure 100% compatibility with older operating systems. Blizzard probably has more accurate numbers, too than what I can find googling.

If it does not run under Windows 7 (my gaming PC) then I will be forced to request a refund…

Windows 8 is closer to windows 10 than 7, in near everything. Also, alot of business still use 8, so it’s also supported for those corporate contracts.

@OP stop using outdated OS’ the reality is the software is outdated. Windows 8 was crap for gaming, however, Windows 10 is better than windows 7 in everyday. Time to leave the past so you can enjoy the past? Lol

If you buy something that explicitly says it does not run on your OS that is certainly your choice. Blizz will be happy to refund you if you realize it within a short time of purchase.

Blizzard does not support OS systems that Microsoft no longer supports.

The answer is to not buy it to begin with because you know the answer.

Why make a post telling people not to tell you the accurate state of the OS and support?

How can I request a refund? Only the orignal Diablo II is listed on the refund page.

I tried this page and it results in an endless loop

The Support page specially has a place for D2R refunds if you view it. For any game go to Support > contact support > Diablo® II: Resurrected > categorize my issue (or just type refund) > Payments >refund

Here is the direct link

Thank you. I have been trying that… it does not work. I click continue and then it reloads the page and starts all over again… never proceeds… endless loop.

When I look at “My Active tickets” it shows the request as “processing” and then minutes later just disappears.

I understand that is pretty painful especially for users who preferred the flexibility or the versatility of the current operating system (OS) each used. These are the common complaints I received working in the Information Technology industry.

Inadvertently when OS releases, they also made awareness and release the information when the OS will be End of Support Life (EOSL). This helps vendors to able to plan their products supportability in their pipeline or roadmaps.

So this is a very common practice that software new release will tend not to support older OSes. The main reason why not supported is due to should there be any performance or compatibility issues, Microsoft in your case will not support.

I do recommend to keep the purchase since you are only limited by the OS you using. You can either upgrade your OS to Windows 10 (P.S You probably still able to the free upgrade) or change your system.

I work in IT as well and there are plenty of people that don’t like change, or just simply don’t want to foot the bill for a new system, which is understandable. I still get people bringing in old Core 2 Duo and Pentium 4 systems with Windows 7, Vista and even XP on them complaining that new programs don’t work or older programs stopped working on them. Its the same recital every time about end of life, if you don’t upgrade, you’re going to be stuck in the past and you’re going to have increasing difficulty running todays software.

Don’t get me wrong, Windows 7 was a fantastic operating system. I held off on upgrading to 10 myself for a bit, but eventually bit the bullet when what I thought was the end of the year chance to get it for free.

I received my refund today.

Just to let others know, the link provided does NOT work to receive a refund. I mentioned this but it fell on deaf ears I guess. I opened a seperate support ticket under “Account, App, & Shop” and GM Fantastress who was VERY nice took care of it for me.

With regard to Windows 7, this is not a Microsoft forum nor is it something I am asking for anyone’s opinion on. I have several Win10 machines but my GAMING PC runs Windows 7. I am an IT Specialist also and I am very aware of the risks and the process to upgrade it. I chose NOT to upgrade this system. I have my own reasons, none of which I need to “Justify” to anyone here. I don’t need the insults from anyone or the scarcasm. There are PLENTY of reasons to remain on Windows 7 and if you don’t know those reasons, educate yourself before you “blindly” word vomit on a forum.

I never expected that a 20 year old game with what equates to a “MOD” (the original game still runs in the background) that I used to play on Windows XP as well as Windows 7, would not work on Windows 7. Shame on me for that assumption. I don’t know why Blizzard gives a hoot what O/S their customers play games on and I certainly think that they have no right playing ANY role in an O/S upgrade, it is really out of place. I have NO ISSUE running ANY other Blizzard game on Windows 7. If this “MOD” truly requires DX12 then there is a technical reason… but if this MOD doesn’t actually use DX12 then this is completely out of line…

FYA - There are still OVER 100+ Millions computers running Windows 7 so if Blizzard wants to alienate that many potential customers, so be it.

A large portion of those ~100 million Windows 7 PCs are in large companies where security on the local machine isn’t top priority (thin clients), others are for CAD or are running ATM’s/Point of Sale/medical/cnc/assembly machines, plus many others. The rest of that pool are consumers that either refuse to upgrade to an updated computer/operating system, or those that simply can’t afford to. The consumers that are still running Windows 7 are by far a minority.

You can’t expect Blizzard to support those who refuse to or can’t keep a somewhat modern computer system.

Well, Microsoft actually still provides security fixes if you are willing to pay: Windows 7 ESU. Just saying…

That’s your choice, as it is your system. But if you make that choice, you accept the risk that developers will leave you out cold. And if you have a Steam library, you might have found that some of the games in the last few years have difficulty running on Windows 7 even in Compatibility Mode.

A 20 year old game that is being modernized under the hood. Usually modernization means adding features that don’t exist on older operating systems and their drivers and/or future-proofing, to what extent a developer can do such a thing, by making the build target only for the latest OS. There are a handful of games out there that won’t run properly on even my Windows 10 1903 v2 build that I’ve locked it down to because the 2004 updates were so disastrous for gamers until just recently. The more time passes, the more modernized features developers put into their games that aren’t going to exist or at least won’t necessarily work properly or at all on Windows 7. Building for Windows 7 compatibility now would force Blizzard to maintain that support for years after the EOL stage, which has already passed. Most sensible developers are looking forward, not backward.

So again, it is a choice you made and you’ll need to accept the responsibility of that choice. There will likely come a point in the near future when graphics card manufacturers put out a final update for Windows 7 and then only make new drivers for Windows 8/10.

The other side of this coin is that Windows 7 will not install to a Kaby Lake or later CPU or natively for AMD’s Ryzen and later lines (you have to jump through some hoops as Microsoft isn’t the one providing the drivers for those newer chipsets). With that in mind, Blizzard isn’t going to design games for an OS that isn’t supported even for basic installation anymore. It just makes no sense from a technical support standpoint.

There is also the issue of end users not realistically being able to receive the Extended Support Updates through January 2023, as those appear to only be available to volume license/enterprise users.

I guess you’ll just need to wait and see if the game runs on Windows 7 either normally or in Compatibility Mode. But as time marches on, fewer and fewer games will do so. Consider yourself warned.

Empty threats or did you preorder it knowing full well there was no support for it on Win7?

100M out of how many? And how many are home gaming machines?

You can multi-quote. Just an FYI so you aren’t always making multiple posts one after the other.
