What David Kim was trying to say in that part of the interview is:
- you need to be careful when growing your character because you can’t reset skill points
- you don’t need to be afraid of making one wrong decision and totally ruin your character because you can max out all Skills eventually. It only took your longer to finish your build.
That’s the reason of max out all skills. So you can switch your build to whatever you want in the end game.
That has nothing to do with what kind of build you can make.
Indeed, you can use every skills eventually. But you may not be able to equip some skills at the same time (for example, you may not be able to equip both “teleport” and “blizzard” for SOR because they are both under “defense tree”). That’s what we are trying to elaborate here.

What this means is that there are 6 Skill Slots available and if you’re playing let’s say a Barb, you can use (4) Skills from the Basic tree and (2) Skills from other trees if that’s what you want to do.

In the smaller image at the bottom, you can see the “Defensive” skills are bound to the “1” key, but you’ll be able to key bind however you wish.

This info is not directly coming from any interviews. I believe that’s a overinterpretation of Quin69’s interview. In which, Dev says:
“Elective Mode” from D3 is on by default, aka you can bind any skill to any hotkey
And from the image you mentioned. Tell me, if I want to bind 1 to “teleport” and 2 to “blizzard” for Sor, how the UI will show? I mean, for the current, what I can see is 1 is bind to whichever you choose in the defensive tree. I know you can bind other keys to defensive tree and that’s not what I’m asking.

D3’s class name can be dynamically changed according to what you put in that slot. In the above image, you can see there are multiple DEFENSIVE appears.
That’s not like how D4 currently shows.
In D4’s current UI, there is a clear binding between skill tree VS keys instead of individual skill VS keys. It’s more like you can’t pick two runes for one skill in D3 no matter how you bind the key to a D3 skill.
It’s exactly how it looks in D4. Let me show you where your problem is. You’re comparing apples and oranges. Let’s compare apples to apples, shall we?

Here, you’ll find that each class has 6 trees. Each tree has different abilities. You can choose multiple abilities from the same tree if you wish. I can’t tell whether you’re trolling or just dense AF, but either way I have better things to do with my time.

These are just interpretations from different people… Not directly from Blizzard.
Personally, I just feel confused by current UI design. And I don’t believe you can only pick 1 skill per tree in the final game, that’s absurd. My interpretation is that, this is just a “Demo feature”.

What I’m arguing is that, you can’t 100% sure about “you can equip whatever you want” just base on the information coming directly from blizzard. Instead, it’s more like you can only equip one skill per tree.
In our former discussion, you seems to be pretty sure about “Blizzard already said you can do so”. For that, I don’t agree.
However, personally, regardless all the evidence, I tends to believe you can freestyle with whatever you want with all skills in the final game. Although all current evidence tends to tell another story.

Well, I think we are finally on the same page now.
There are posts about “you can equip whatever you want” and posts about “you can only pick 1 skill per tree”. And the only thing Blizzard told us directly was there is a “Elective Mode” which kinds of contradicting with what their UI is currently.
I think this is a legit question for Blizzard to answer, so both me and “FroZen” post this question on a Blizzard forum and hope for an answer directly from Blizzard.

David Kim says skill respecs are free. Joe Shely says it’s the talent respecs that are free.
David Kim never says skill can respec. At least, in his interview with Rhykker, he said skill can not while talent can.
