Diablo 30th Anniversary Request

Here is what I would like:

  • add any goodies for D3 if they are coming (I’m not getting my hopes up or holding my breath)
  • add the goodies to the other Diablo games
  • bring the following to Steam: D3, D2-R, SC-BW Remastered, SC-2 (+ all expansions), Heroes of the Storm, War3 Reforged
  • make sure all of the games will work well via Steam Deck
  • make them relatively inexpensive on Steam

I’ll re-purchase the Steam versions just so that I know that they will run well on Linux. This gives me the escape from the Blizz launcher, which sometimes acts weird when there are updates to it. The above request list means that the games would remain Windows titles and I would be running them through Steam’s Proton compatibility module. D4 is already on Steam and runs flawlessly. There is a French Canadian streamer that Streams is D4 game play, while on Linux, with no FPS loss.

Blizz/Activision/MicroSoft isn’t ready to embrace Linux native Vulkan 64-bit game clients, which is noticeably faster (higher FPS) than through the compatibility module, but I’ll take the flawless with high FPS through the compatibility module.

Those who wish to remain on Win-10/11, please continue to do so. This is not an attempt to recruit you to the dark side.

Thank you and happy anniversary.

Likely that all games getting a Steam integration with this announcement. We’ll know in a few hours but it’s one of the things that are highly anticipated.

It makes perfect sense to bring other Diablo titles to Steam, especially as Valve rolls out a new Steam Machine and Steam Controller 2. There’s already a sizable number of Steam Deck users who’d like to enjoy the titles BossDogg mentioned.

In addition to purchasing individual titles, I can see them selling a Quadrilogy (D1, D2R, D3, D4).

I can’t keep track of the number of times D3 PC controller support is requested here. I’m sure an announcement like that will bring some smiles and new life to this great game.

I wish they’d bring diablo 3 to steam

They did not do anything for D3.

Why encourage a Steam lock-in and letting Blizzard be lax? :stuck_out_tongue:

D2R’s fine on Linux:

Even D3 in 2016 (I played it plenty 2025 though):

I ran those with just Wine (no GE/Proton/Lutris), and imagine they’d run better with a quick hook-up to Steam with Proton, and integrate easy with Steam’s controller support; that can be done today no re-purchase or waiting required!

Bnet client also has flags for quiet launches (I’d probably run it headless on Deck and just --exec= games)

Yeah, bummer man. At least there are new Diablo thing to do.

The optimism I saw immediately after the Blizzcon tease was for either D1 or D3 reboots.

I’d love to see Diablo 1 redone in first person 3D perspective.

To be honest, I’m sure many would return to D3 if they added controller support… Damn I’d be happy if they just gave us the option to install the console version to our PC.

Console emulators can help you.

But console version haven’t mouse and keyboard support

@Everyone:
Wait a minute. They want us to purchase an expansion to D2R? They want $25 for a new warlock class. So this is a “happy anniversary… now give us your money” announcement. Peace fellas. Y’all be safe.

@Espionage724-1903:
I run D2R and D3 through WINE/Lutris. It works fine. The only issue is the launcher sometimes falls over on itself when a new update is pushed out to it.

I normally do not defend Blizzard because yes, they are a garbage company. But once in a blue moon, they do… do something worthy. If RoW was simply just a class, I wouldn’t say it’s worth $25. But given that it also vastly improves stashes, which any D2 veteran knows that we’re packrats, plus additional things to do, all packed up, I’d say $25 is fair. I’m not surprised they didn’t try charging $60.

Matt:

I can sympathize with your PoV. However, given the level of complete disregard for what players have been asking for and the amount of “stuff” we are getting for the advertised cost, I have to disagree.

Infernal Edition is available to new customers (those that don’t have D2R) at $40 (US). The DLC upgrade is $25 (US) which is more than half the cost of the Infernal Edition. This DLC should be $5 for the new class and $3 for the QoL goodies, thus a grand total of $8 for those upgrading from the base game. Keep in mind that there was no benefit (discount) if one already owned D2-LoD when purchasing the D2R base game. Those QoL features should have been implemented in a patch 15+ years ago, or should have come with the D2R base game.

So…

  • no Linux native Vulkan 64-bit game client
  • no Mac game client (for all my Mac users out there)
  • still no LAN play option in D2R (IPv4 and IPv6, with or without Bonjour dependency)
  • still no Steam version (so I can escape the minor issues of the B Net launcher on Linux)
  • still no external stash management feature coming from the developer for off-line players (meeting or exceeding GoMule)
  • several more shared stash tabs (like 5-10)
  • no extra char slots (another 5-10)
  • no new zones/content (outside of a new fight with the ancients)
  • can the loot grail tracking feature be reset?
  • can the loot grail tracking feature be integrated into an external stash management feature for those who run races with friends or other projects
  • no improvements to the other classes (this might be a positive given Blizz’s track record)

…and not a damn thing for D3. I don’t care for immortal. I don’t do mobile gaming on my phone. Blizzard’s management has not inspired me (and the bulk of my RL buddies) into buying D4 or its expansions. My brother purchased the D4 base game and abandoned it well b4 its 1st expansion because he got bored. Blizzard lost my trust a long time ago thus I avoid pre-orders. This kind of move at a cash grab is NOT the way to win back my trust. The abandonment of D3, the disregard of so many good improvement ideas for D3 that came from the player community, and the massively goofy moves to kill the fun in D3 (ex: severely restricting the Firebird set with respect to Wiz pets) does not inspire trust and enthusiasm. I offered to just re-purchase multiple game clients at a reasonably low price on Steam. $40 for just D2-R with Warlock DLC on Steam as a new purchase is way too much. I’ll just deal with the Blizz launcher suffering seizures every few weeks/months. In a very severe worst case scenario where there is absolutely no way to play Blizz games on Linux, then I would just abandon Blizz completely. I have no love for Micro$oft.

why’s that? How are they different?
And what makes the console version more enjoyable?

to be fair, they also added a sh1tload of QoL changes which had been requested for years. Maybe not by everyone but by a noticable amount of folks.

EDIT: Matt beat me to it. Oh well.

I already posted a reply to Matt… check that out first.

I don’t blame you for feeling how you do. The company has burned so many people. Yes, some of the things they added could have been just patches. My feeling is that it’s a small amount for additional support to an old game that doesn’t sacrifice quality for stupid in-game purchases.

Native controller support, couch co-op, not item Tetris. It is the perfect way to introduce my daughter to this amazing world. I own it on PC, PS3 & 4, Xbox one and Nintendo Switch. but to actually play this on my main PC co -op would be amazing. no more having to set a console and tv up just to play one game that seems to be abandoned.

The thing is I barely could call something like this “support” when the company has had ample time of more than 15+ years to add the QoL stuff. Even if they gave QoL stuff for free (stash space, specialty stash and stackable items, etc) and then charged $20 for new:

  • class
  • runes/runewords
  • jewels
  • items
  • sets
  • sunder charms
  • charm crafting
  • uber ancients encounter
  • maybe a few more new things

… then maybe I might be a bit more inclined to accept what they’ve done. What I’ve described above would be inline with what was done with the Necro DLC for D3. What has been presented is an all or nothing cash grab scenario. I’ve already paid for D2, LoD, and D2R but yet I’m undeserving of any QoL goodies in D2R. If I don’t purchase the DLC I get nothing beyond D2R base game, which leads to what exactly would I be celebrating on this Diablo 30th anniversary. So far its nothing x nothing = nothing.

I call it support because it is, whether we think the timing was good or execution was right. They did stated many years ago that Diablo 2 was done, that there would be no more updates or support. Since then, we’ve got a remaster, several updates, and a DLC.

We don’t have to buy the DLC, we can choose to. The QoL features are nice, but nothing gamebreaking. People have dealt with sorting out gems and runes for a long time. It won’t make/break anyone.

While I understand how you feel, I’m just glad they didn’t do what normal Blizzard would have normally done and charged $60 like a new game, made it so you cannot play unless you updated, etc.

Believe me, I’m not defending Blizzard. They deserve all the licks they get for all the things they’ve done to people over the many years. Lying, gaslighting, worst customer support in the industry, predatory monetization, while giving kickbacks to people who will pretend they don’t do these things and double down on it. However, I always give credit where it’s due.
