Whether they are optional is quite irrelevant. Technically the whole game is optional.
World bosses are part of the game. If they cant be soloed, then the game is by definition not fully soloable.
World bosses should be soloable. Scale them with the amount of players in the area, WoW style.
You should be able to toggle a setting so you never ever see other people in the game world
you can stay as a solo player to complete them, therefore it is soloable. If you don’t like the idea of it don’t do it. It will be what it is, all we can do is wait and see.
They want to sell more MTX cosmetics.
People seeing each others characters helps with that.
If multiple players are killing the same enemy, it is by definition not solo. Making a group through some interface is not needed for it to no longer be solo.
You can be a lone stranger if you want. World bosses are huge so it’s not like you would want to be completely solo for them anyway, however the option is there. You will likely die but hey i’m sure people will find a way as they always do eventually.
The physical size of the monster seems fairly irrelevant for wanting to solo them.
The difficulty of soloing a world boss should be around the same as killing it with 10 people. It is okay if it is slightly more difficult, since getting perfect balance is not easy,
Why would we do that. That is a bad idea in general, and we already know how that can turn out with Blizzard; through Diablo 3 (and others).
Sure. But then it is a matter of how hard it is to not getting hit (imo, since it is an A-RPG, you should not be able to avoid getting hit 100% of the time).
As well as monster HP. If it takes an hour to solo a world boss, and 5 minutes for 10 people, then clearly they are not around the same difficulty.
My gut feeling is that they are going to do this. Mob will not require use of a grouping tool and will scale based on the number of people engaged in fighting it. Just run up and smack it if you wish to be part of it.
So, wait, you’ll be able to solo them if you’re max level, and really skilled. You won’t do it the first or second time, but you will eventually. Wonder what (Blizzard) game has bosses like that?
I cant imagine absolutely everything I want have been mentioned
But some has, a lot of times. That is the nature of a forum though. Same topics keep showing up again and again.
Would make sense at least.
But even if they do it WoW style, in WoW you have ‘daily quest bosses’ that scale from 1 player and up (and sometimes more like 3+, where it depends on your class/build if it is soloable) . But also actual world bosses that scales more like from 20 people and up (actually, cant remember if the world bosses scale at all, but they are certainly not soloable at their lvl).
If you are alone in the area you wont get far by running up to a world bossing and attacking it in WoW, even with the scaling.
If you happen to be the only player in an area with a world boss, and for some reason Blizzard cant find other players to match you up with, you never should have to leave the boss alive (as long as you have some kind of appropriate gear/build/skill of course). Doesn’t matter if it is 4 AM on a low populated NS HC server or whatever. That does not belong in a self-claimed soloable A-RPG to be honest.
IF there are other players nearby, then okay, match them up together (though I still think the game should have a toggle for playing completely solo)
As long as none of the following can occur if a fight with a World Boss drags on:
The world boss disappears.
The world boss becomes enraged, with it’s stats being amplified.
The world boss begins to heal itself in small-noticable increments.
Then yes they should be soloable as they’re scaled with the number of players who are engaged with it (from what’s been seen on the blizzcon videos anyway). The thing however is that you may not have an opportunity to solo it as there may always be at least another player fighting it.
So it’s less of players being incapable of fighting it solo due to lack of power, and more of players simply not having the chance to do so solo.
Of course if blizzard decides to give players the opportunity of creating their own private sessions where they can fight whatever they want in complete solitude (or with a small party of invited friends), including World Bosses; then there wouldn’t be any issues whatsoever regarding solo vs multiplayer, in terms of content availability that is.
if pvp is done well enough (at least far better than Diablo 3’s pvp), then I can tell you that i won’t be playing peacefully, as that’ll be one of my endgame activities.
There are Blizzard videos out there that discuss the intent that headed towards a Druid. It changed. They did listen to people but for whatever reason it did not happen. They obviously did include it in D4. Use the google and youtube search functions. Miss Cheetah was right back then and also here in this thread.
Here is the youtube that may have contributed to the speculation and theories and some existing threads… there are too many over that last decade to list:
In the ancient tome of the Druids, the Scéal Fada (“Long Story”), it is written that Bul-Kathos, the great and ancient king of the Barbarian tribes, had a mysterious but trusted confidant, who was only referred to as Fiacla-Géar (“Sharp-Tooth”). This man is sometimes described as Bul-Kathos’s close friend, and at other times, he is referred to as his brother. Whatever the source of their relationship, their bond was strong, and together they shared the secrets of the ancients: of the mysteries below the peaks of Mount Arreat, of the venerated task put to their people to protect those mysteries, and of the prophecies regarding the dark times ahead. They both agreed that, in order to fulfil their sacred trust, their people must devote themselves to nothing save that charge. However, they disagreed on exactly how the people could best do this. Bul-Kathos believed that only by bringing the tribes together and training them in strict martial discipline could the tribes faithfully concentrate on their goal for generations to come, known as the Children of Bul-Kathos, the Barbarians
Fiacla-Géar, on the other hand, believed that only through obtaining a spiritual oneness with the land they had sworn to protect could the people truly appreciate the importance of their role. Both agreed the other’s philosophy had merit, and so around the time Bul-Kathos united the tribes, Fiacla-Géar gathered together a small group consisting of the tribes’ greatest warrior-poets and shamans and mysteriously retreated into the forests surrounding the area known as Scosglen.
Some sources mention that this separation happened around the time of the Mage Clan Wars, and that the Druids were banished by their Barbarian brothers. Both stories could well be true, and the separation of the two people being under an agreement with the two brothers, but also happening at the same time as fear of the corruption of magic had spread among the noble warriors.
There is a lot more, but I didn’t want to wall of text this thread. I wish I still had my cd box of D2: LoD. I would have checked that out in an instant to do a compare and contrast to see if it’s the same or if the ‘lore’ changed after D3.
The bold words were links. I can’t post links in a response.
That’s really cool. I really dig seeing people fascinated by the lore and storyline who are deeply into the complete context of the game.
Kudos !
I believe that if Blizzard collaborated with all the great external user artists and their staff and released an actual book (with the art) on it, it would probably sell pretty well. It would also remove all speculation and storyline variants and a heck of a lot of threads.
I agree. The lore of Diablo is what made me stick to it. Yes, I remember D1. It was dark af and it was basically an interactive horror movie. D2 was to D1 as T2 was to T1, perfect. But again, it was the lore that tied it all together.
I also played AD&D 2nd Ed. off and on during the time of D2. Each game reminded me of the other so much. It was awesome. When a friend of mine showed me monster compendiums and adventures from the Diablo franchise integrated into the world of AD&D 2nd Ed., I knew it was the perfect time to be a gamer at the computer or away.
Then WoTC bought out TSR and D3 happened, and as the old cliché goes… the rest is history.
Edit: More on the lore. Druids are connected to Barbarians. Assassins are connected to Demon Hunters (though some say Amazons). Crusaders are connected to Paladins (and the follower Templar). The rest of the classes flesh out the rest of the Diablo franchise/world perfectly.
Due to just lore alone, I hope Blizz adds as many classes as possible to D4 over the years. That would be absolutely awesome. Since the Diablo franchise has it’s own world, it doesn’t need to be a Lovecraft clone, looking at you WoW and Grim Dawn. Not that I mind too much, of course, I would rather my Diablo lore stay Diablo lore.
D3 has sold over 30 million copies and has been out for 8 years… That’s not the definition of failure. They’ve gotten your money and probably multiple times. This isn’t an MMO with a subscription fee. If they wanted to, they could release the game, patch it for a year or two and then never do anything for it again.
PoE is your nearest example of how a modern D2 style game would perform today and it peaks at around 20-30k players during the day on steam. That’s where most of the diehard D2 fanboys went for their fix.
