It’s DULL.
DULL is not “Dark” and “Dark” isn’t what D1/2 were all about, either, it’s incorrect to think so - directed at the devs not you.
Example.
Look at Lut Ghol, the best part of the game, look at the backdrop they use for the far distance, look at the gold/tan everywhere, the torches, the bricks, the texture, the realism, the style, the color choice, the contrast going on. Light beige bricks, attention to small details, grey sand, dark brown buildings, bright idk necro skeletal mage elemental effects, your health / mana pools are like bright bold with a shine on them looking like ‘glass’ and such.
Look at the D4 demo.
It’s DULL. They could make it darker and it’s still DULL.
Politely meant ofc, bc you’ve stated you play mad D2 which is good, not sure for how many years or decades, but like many i’ve been comparing D2/3 for like the max possible years to compare.
D2 is dark in places and light in other spots, the contrast is good, the realism, the color choice, like all of this is vibrant barely anything in D2 is dull. Rogue Enc is green, like that’s not “Dark” at all, its just crazy that they think D1/2 is about being dark it’s like insulting. More like about being the by far best games of the series they should study, not “dark”.
Look at a cave.
Light grey, BLACK fog of war, bight flames on torches, red blue or w/e fallen, like the aura around the elite is bright blue contrasting on the grey. But, Fog wasn’t on their ‘good’ list bc people think it’s bad for the game when it’s totally not when done correctly like D2 where it doesnt hinder you at later levels. Smh at how obvious this all is to a good-dev.
Like the color choice or whatever it’s perfectly called in art-words is suuuper bad for D4. It’s not about being “dark” which D4 isn’t, its about being “not dull” which D4 totally is, regardless of colors chosen. Brightness matters, amt of realistic look matters, and such.
D4 looks like a game that’s sat in the sun on the table for 2 years straight, or like 5, and it’s all faded and damaged. Yes? You play D2 all the time right so can’t you see this glaringly obvious comparsion too?
i see the problem here, we just have very different opinions on what does and doesn’t look good. I hate lut and think it looks tacky and awful…… soooo I guess agree to disagree.
I remember back then the D2 Act2 as being the most criticised art-wise (I mean, the universally hated A3 jungle part has other issues beyond art) because of being too shiny. I insist, “art-wise”.
Yea mean it’s subjective what looks best within D2 that’s not an issue affecting D4, it’s the fact if they even see what they are skipping over with D4, problably bc the obvious they just look at D3 yet they told us they will listen and respect D2…this demo shows the opposite hand they fronted.
“art” i meant on the looks dept, but music wise, yea subjective too, to me Harem is easily D2’s best song it’s so, so good, Lut Ghol is #2 for me, then probably a big tie between Docks A3, Caves A1 yea Wilderness, Harrogoth would round out 3rd place for Mr U’s music.
But this is seriously a big deal bc usually w games the concrete alpha stuff like art / looks / colors these hard-to-quickly overhaul things are there to stay, and that’s why this is a huge red flag like skills and all these other things they can patch back and such or patch out but this stuff is core as can be and they’re doing it so, so eyesore like, and even worse, thinking it’s so grand? Like, goodbye D4 if this is your idea of respecting D1/2. Really looks like D3 all over again, i think it’s time they get real and just stop with the 'we looked at D2" if they really didnt with care.

Oh it’s very possible. D2 looked a lot more pixelated to me.
The announcement footage of D3 from 2008 looked much better than what we have now.
You could say that they should have taken out some of the lightning and desaturated the colors a bit, a bit like this…:

But I also agree with many others here: D4 just looks too bleak and grey. D4 isn’t even dark. It is mostly grey and desaturated brown, and the remaining colors are all desaturated into nothing. It is like they overcompensated for D3.

I took out ~20% of the brightness/lighting and increased the saturation of the colors by ~20%.
I also could have added a vignette (aka making the edges of the screen darker or even much darker, like light radius), but I may do that later.
That is because they did not make the game darker, but rather more grey and waaay too desaturated.

Health Globes are an amazing feature and I wish for them to return in D4 (in combination with health potions that have 2 or 3 charges instead of a CD).

Yeah, if you one-hit everything, then it certainly is, but if it takes a while to kill enemies, then they are perfectly fine. It just needs to be balanced correctly.
its not even about how “easy” it is
its just about they…take an other aspect of the game out of your hands and just do it for the 9 years olds because their attention span isnt enough for killing AND healing
the point is that I want to decide whats happening when im fighting and when I put 10 perfect skulls in my equipment when I decided that i get healed and i had to sacrifice something for that
D3: “nope, just get auto healed and focus on your main stat hahahahah”
I don’t see it this way.
If Health Globes would not be in the game they had reduce the CD on Potions by anywhere between 10-20 seconds, which completely had changed the pace of the game.
I personally would have wanted Health Potions with 3 charges and a recharge time of ~15 seconds each, while they recover ~20% of your health immediately and another ~30-40% within 4-5 seconds and Health Globes on top of that.
or you had to focus on itemization, lifesteal, healing skills, auras
cant imagine that being a thing o.o
all of that and health globes and potions with charges are not mutually exclusive.

they even talked about having tested other ways of healing during one of the many Blizzcon panels and health globes was certainly the best way to go about it.
