If this turns out to how things go down, I will buy you a beer, maybe a whole six pack…

So far we have historically been really lucky to almost always avoid directly clashing with the release of other major games. However, in late 2019, we released the Blight league less than two weeks after WoW Classic's launch. This had a massively negative impact on player numbers, play hours, Twitch views and revenue. It was a bit of a disaster, and quite a big learning experience for us.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a massive game. A lot of people are going to play it, and they're probably going to play it pretty hard. By looking at the stats from services like Steam, you can see the player engagement curves for large releases like this, and it's easy to see that there will likely be several weeks of absolute dominance while everyone enjoys it.
But the commercial reality is that if we kept our original release date, we would be [Edited by Blizzard]. We believe we'd lose at least half our players, almost all of our streamers, a chunk of our developers, and we honestly wouldn't blame them. Launching at the same time as a game of that size is not feasible.
And that’s the single player version of what we were discussing.
D4 team has to speed up their wheels with all seriousness.

Or slow it down to make sure they don’t release a buggy game.
And also completely irrelevant.
Making sure you do not release your game within weeks of a blockbuster title makes sense.
It does however not mean that you have to release years apart from another game.
GGG even explains it:

6 months before Cyberpunk Online at minimum or D4 is doomed.
Or take the time that they’ll obviously need and release Diablo 4 a significant amount of time after Cyberpunk, instead of trying to release it early where it would likely have either bugs and/or features cut from it. Because there’s no way that Diablo 4 will be ready in 2021 (without major cuts to the game).
Yes, release it 2 years after CP:O and enjoy worse fate than PoE 2.
Maybe a beta at the end of the year? It would be cool if some of the streams (not the condescending ones) could get in so the rest of us could see how it looks.
Yeah, a beta (most likely closed instead of open) would be more likely for 2021 than the game’s actual launch. As for the game’s actual launch, I’m expecting a window between late 2022-2024 for the game’s release.
tbh thought there were some valid points early on but after post/s like this one I’m starting to doubt you even looked at them from the right angle tbh… almost as if you want to push it but gets more and more retarded every time you want to “emphasize”
first things first:
there’s ZERO use and ZERO reason to “compete” release dates with another game… and more importantly there’s ZERO reason if not having confidence that a good product is coming out to even bother picking a one, cause that day when the competition goes “so badly down that you can score easily” will never come
would say some things sounded somewhat reasonable at start with increase of tempo of currently developed things, but that doesn’t (and more importantly SHOULDN’T) impact the release date, in fact noone gets it right from the first time, and is VERY IMPORTANT to keep that in mind
and truth be told in first person here’s the conclusion that I want to emphasize even more and more as time goes on tbh: dates and competition doesn’t determine quality of your own product, your dedication does
thinking otherwise is by far the worst mindset to have and it’s the exact one same thing that has destroyed games time and time again (from one or the other reason mentioned above), D3 was released too early, SC2 dev team behaved like they “nailed it” the very first time so we watched crap games for like year and a half (instead of couple of months), then HotS expansion same thing, behaved like “nailed it again” from the first time, but was in fact SUPER OBVIOUS that they were releasing the game in a fully retarded mode tbh
Long story short:
It’s really important to not DELUDE yourself (and the others for that matter) that either of the following two are possible:
- Make an easy score cause of bad/worse competition
- You can nail it perfectly from the very first time
I mean, those are super obvious illusions (BOTH) and are very dangerous not just for games but companies’ longevity status as well
I would order more blizz/diablo merchandise but their shipping charge is absurdly over the top.
