Think D4 should have THREE playing modes
- Adventure mode (the current softcore material), can die/repair/buy stuff a lot, never be “stuck” in any place (unless an act boss chamber)… Everything can be re/done via Vendors (maybe even re-spec but at a relatively high cost) things like that, but perhaps add a “death counter” per character so it’s still kind of “shameful” to do so

- Adept mode - you start with “one life” but if/when playing well might end up acquiring some “cheat death” material, i.e. “Orbs of Denial” by your own. For example defeating Act bosses might be good place to add some (provided they give you only 1st time the orb, or maybe chance-related to drop extra but at a very small amount). The combat would be much more challenging and/or interactive overall, you have a stagger-bar/recovery mechanic and would have to watch out to avoid getting surrounded even by small mobs cause chances are you can’t just “right-click” nor “potion-spam” your way out when they start “triggering” your stagger mechanic by hitting you (even if damage reduction of your gear being high) often
- Hardcore mode - Same as adept mode, perhaps not so much CC/stagger caused by mobs but you can’t find/loot/purchase “cheat death” stuff (AT ALL). This mode is for those that probably ALREADY know the nastiest areas/procs from the Adept mode
BUT beware - because of the addition of stagger/CC on getting hit - chances are this time spamming Vitality specs probably won’t be enough to reach further, you’d still have to know how to combat efficiently in order not to die overall
There, I said it… but think this is true
IF you want to make the fights/combat challenging THEN should probably think about including/introducing a “stepping stone” between SC and HC

… Adept mode would be the best experience for those that want challenge but not grind for somewht/superior gear before entering “more dangerous places” (such as me :D) IMO
Why are you interested in shaming other people? Is your life so bad, are you so lacking in self confidence that you need to have systems of shame developed in video games?

Annd what IS your problem ?, you deliberately disingenued the discussion by quoting the ONE THING that you didn’t like aand dismissed like 98% of good/constructive/suggestive stuff and quoted the ONE THING you didn’t want ?
IN ADDITION you continued with the insult of “shaming other people ?”, first of all I NEVER mentioned that that death counter should be publicly visible, did I ?
WHERE in my post I mentioned that the death counter should be publicly visible ?
Third, you’re a class-act cucumber moron, sorry but had to… Your GOAL is to make me “swallow” my words and IGNORE the whole discussion about the topic/suggestion even though they were a SUGGESTION material
Soo yeah, at the end of days here’s the boomerang @
ARE YOU so damn much interested in JUDGING OTHER PEOPLE and/or their mindset while they’re describing revolutionary/imaginary stuff with a relatively friendly suggestive/discussive tone ?
Thanks for ignoring 98% of suggestion/potentially-cooperative stuff I wrote just in order to “inform the public” that you don’t like it when your dick is being measured (even though that wasn’t the topic in the first place at all !)

Ummm because your whole premise is based on shaming people. You’re the one who wants to dick measure not me.
Must have really hit the bullseye based on your overreaction. Yikes.

I personally don’t see the reason to have hardcore and semihardcore apart from softcore.
I would never play it but i guess there is a niche. Saying that, it would cost extra resources and put additional strain on servers, just to apeal to handful of players that alone is a reason for me not to implement it.
Now regarding staggering mechanic, we actually had something similar with d3 where some monsters could keep you chain staggered until certain doom, there was no way of escaping it since those mobs were twice as fast as you and moved in big numbers. I tell you something, it was not fun…
That’s because the CC applied at the first hit suffered… IF there was a bar that needed be filled first before you get CC-ed would’ve been different… Another problem was that the whole mechanic was 100% based by ONLY ELITES and only specifically via those nasty affixes they got
Pretty sure they could implement the best of both worlds into a something interactive and also relatively fair material
I dont feel it eighter
Most ppl play softcore and the game can still be hard
HC is the extra challenge
Semihardcore i dont get why
there is no place for semihardcore mode. you want to play hardcore playit.
if you cant stand loosing everything upon death you can play your hardcore
- create a char and play it whenever you die ask your self if it was a legit death
- if you consider it was a legit death delete the char and start over
and blizzard wont put a death counter. not going to happen
I think they are trying to put as many things together instead of separate people in different game modes.
But we could have different difficulties in one single mode. Since the enemies will adjust to our level, we can always have a way to modify how many more levels the enemies are. For the instances it would be very easy to do.
Going with the OP idea, they could make it that the first time you die, you become a normal character.
I think if they did another game mode, it could be focused to pvp. But again, i think they will avoid more game modes if posible.
Dont get me wrong, staggering could work, it was just a way it was implemented in d3. It wasnt the elites either, the most anoying was burrowing leapers and scavengers they basically would swarm you and kill you if you dont kill them before they get to you
Those guys were cool :D, well not quite but I get your point… I kinda had more problems with the things that came out of the pile of corpses in the sewers in act 2, but… ok
Thing is, you need use the battlefield against those buggers, when in open ground you’re screwed but those usually were placed in narrow caves which was fine/evening out the problem… Guess you knew that though…
@OT
My point is - once they introduce stagger/survival mechanic there won’t be need to overbuff minions (neither on HP nor on numbers, i.e. neither overbuff, nor overcrowd) in order for them game to be a proper challenging material
IN FACT think there should be more “mid tier” material, D was always about either super tough elites or super easy to kill crowd… Well, this is just a way to reduce the “insignificance” of the crowd whilest not necessarily putting all the “challengepower” in the elite squads
The REASON why I started the topic/discussion is mainly cause I think there should be higher challenge (not just toughness or the 1v1 material from D2) but actual strategic value of battles once even smallest of mobs can contribute to your death even when not doing the surround
ANOTHER reason why I suggested this was (mainly) cause the devs said the game would be more of an Open World, i.e. having MMO elements to it at some events/dungeons
Don’t see how the playerbase playing HC would be fitting into THAT kind of an open world. I mean it’s far too restrictive to give an interactive battlefield/multiplayer experience (kind of), overall just my 50c though…
The stagger thing is very nice. I would advice to check some games that do it very well, and also games that do very well boss fights.
Bosses should have mechanics that allow them to change tactics during the fight. Elites should be able to do that too. And groups of enemies should change the way they fight (their tactics) denpending on how the fight goes: this should be even more relevant with monster’s families.
The stagger system should change the way in which the enemies fight too: depends on the level of the bar, if the players manage to crowd control them or not, if the player harm them (like breaking the arms of the boss) or not, also the enemy should do something when comes out of the crowd control.
Can add to that to be able to intereact more with the environment, use it to fight but also can work against the player.
