By Three They Come

Wanted to post a narration/synopsis for the Diablo IV cinematic trailer for the sake of discussion.

Feel free to share your own impressions and opinions.

There’s a lot to take in and for a Diablo reveal I felt thoroughly satisfied from what we’ve seen. The storytelling has my confidence high and I’m excited to see the direction DIV takes.
With more questions than answers I figured we could all play a part and get the ball rolling.

By Three They Come:

The beginning was eerily silent and reminiscent. A desolate town left rotting. Old creaks of wood, a forgotten church bell and the startling bang from a window blind blowing in the wind.

This was a obvious nod to the original Diablo cinematic that really hints at a franchise returning to darkness.

As we creep closer to the church you start hearing the incomprehensible babble of prayer and stark hisses. A frantic group is immediately revealed as they attempt to outrun demons on the chase.

Three degenerates and a scholar suffering from severe injuries.

One person immediately sticks out. A leader amongst the motley crew. Risking life and limb he seemed the most determined as he carried the scholar despite desperate pleas to leave him.

Courageously he organizes the men. Almost feeding into their desires only to push them closer toward their goals.

Promises of coin and locked away knowledge.

Could there be an ulterior motive?

The men defend their position and soon after secrets are revealed. Blood is the key.
Taking initiative the leader willingly sacrifices his chance for survival allowing the the others to break the ancient seal under their own will.

Scrambling into the tomb the two degenerates left standing turn their backs breaking the seal that ironically seals the fate of the leader. One gone but plenty of riches left to share.

The look left on the scholars face is most notable. Shock and despair for what lies ahead.

Now for the most chilling and by far my favorite part of the cinematic.

Left alone and thirsting for gold the two degenerates turn to the scholar with violent demands.

“What about the coin?!”

“We came here for treasure! What is this place?”

The thirst for riches quickly turn to concern. Knowing the truth the scholar attempts to explain himself. While gasping for air he is interrupted by a ominous and powerful voice.

“It’s a gate.”

Absolutely captivating. Every single moment that followed drew my attention further.

Confusion spreads among the men. Suddenly a supernatural force snatches the degenerate with the last torch available and darkness ensues.
Moments later small blood drops reveal his location. Suspended in air a mortified look of panic consumes his face as his body and arms are twisted and broken.

Then with great force his body thrusts upside down against one of three pillars.

“And blood is the key…” The ominous voice explains.

Focusing on the last degenerate the camera pans to the side and their leader is revealed lurking behind him.

The lighting and framing of this scene give the characters a life like comparison. A true testament of the supreme quality we’ve come to expect from Blizzard.

A quick swing of the axe and the leader takes a forceful blow to the face severing his jaw. Slowly he stands tall as the sound of bones move into place. He is unfazed.

It becomes apparent that their leader is the one pulling the strings. In a sudden flash the last degenerate thrusts into the second pillar. A similar fate.

Ancient seals begin to shift and demonic markings etch their way into the faces of both men while blood is pulled from their bodies.

“The eternal light protects me.”

Prayer is now a chant of desperation from the scholar. Our lone survivor. Walking slowly to the center their former leader faces him.

“From the abyss we seek thy salvation.”

“By three they come. By three thy way opens.”

“By the blood of the willing”

A ghostly transition. The leader reveals himself as a demonic priest.

“We call thee home.”

Mesmerizing. The occultist themes transcend anything Blizzard has done before and I applaud the developers for crafting intrigue so elegantly.

“Come.”

The priest exudes his power by gently pulling the scholar against his will. Still in prayer the scholar squints intensely as if in denial of the horror that awaits him.

“Open your eyes.”

Reluctantly he peers into the priest while chanting. Praying in hope that the eternal light will still protect him. The camera shifts to the priest’s eyes.
A void fills them and a reflection of the scholar lies within the abyss.

“There is no light here. You came to the darkness.”

“For knowledge.”

The camera shifts to the scholar’s eyes. They widen briefly then turn down in shame. A look of defeat. The priest is somehow ominous and solemn.
He convinces the scholar to surrender and speak the words that will complete the ritual now taking place.

In what seems like a act of defiance the scholar attempts to dignify the fate that awaits him and begins to cant the words.

“By three they come. By three thy way opens. By the blood of the willing."

"We call thee home.”

The ritual is complete and the blood from the scholar now joins the other men creating a triangle between them. A membrane of blood is formed.
In a dream like state the scholar is consumed by flashes of imagery. Presumably the knowledge that he was unknowingly seeking. Pain and fear take hold as the truth reveals itself.

“Hail the daughter of hatred. Creator of Sanctuary.”

“Hail Lilith.”

He says this with his last breathe as his pupils dilate and life leaves the eyes.

We are now witnesses of the scholars last moments alive and as the last moments of the cinematic approach Lilith transcends the barrier between worlds and is greeted by the priest.

“Blessed Mother. Save us.”

He now bows before her power and malevolence. A incredibly striking scene that ends the cinematic trailer. If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

The flashes shown before Lilith arrives. Seems to show Inarius chained up. So this could mean we see Inarius at some point in D4.

Likely, the Blizzard Games press site has art with Inarius and Lilith.

Darn. I saw the thread title and was hoping for a sordid love triangle.

I was disappointed. :frowning:

I didn’t see that as Inarius, perhaps you’re right. It seems then that the new (?) cult are the one’s bringing him back, and if they are doing so on Lilith’s behalf, I am leaning more toward the pale priest being simply a blood cultist of sorts rather than Rathma, as has been speculated. Although, maybe Rathma is behind the blood cult …?

The power that the pale priest controls and his knowledge of the ancient gate and the ritual calling Lilith means he’s someone, or something, who is very important.
His description doesn’t fit Rathma exactly, but I think it’s likely the priest is one of the original followers of Rathma and Trag’Oul?

The cinematic alone sparked my interest in Diablo lore.

Must admit that I’m looking into buying the books to learn more. Lol.

I agree, there’s definitely something to him. I’m still thinking, or maybe just hoping, the cultists seen/described in what we’ve been provided on D4 thus far are in fact the development of the blood cultists shown off in D3 adventure mode (I really enjoyed their aesthetics, and the darkness and grittyness around them fits with the descriptions of the feel of D4). Whether or not it’s Rathma, I’m then thinking this guy is high up among them.

I can definitely recommend the books for anyone enjoying the world and lore of Diablo. None of them are literary masterpieces, but they are enjoyable for any nerdier fans and they actually lift the game experience a lot. I’m going through the last one right now (Heroes Rise, Darkness Falls) - here’s hoping there’ll be new stories connecting to D4 out soon!

I want to make some wild guess. Before that, I want to mention some truth. I went to blizzcon and attended every Diablo talk.

  1. Andariel will return to Diablo 4. This is confirmed in Art of Diablo 4 talk.

  2. Duriel will return to Diablo 4. This is confirmed through gameplay trailer.

  3. Diablo 4 happens after Diablo 3.

  4. Mathael shattered the black soulstone, this creates problem(confirmed through World and lore talk).
    ============
    Now comes my guessing.

  5. All seven evils will return to Diablo IV in some way because the soul stone was shattered. If Andariel and Duriel can, why can’t the other 5?

  6. The man in opening cinematic is Rathma, son of Lilith. He brings Lilith to save the Sanctuary from demons/angels once again.

  7. Lilith helps Sanctuary defeat the evil, but then seeks to control Nephalem’s power.

  8. Nephalem fights her and wins. Game ends.

I think in return we would have to do something for her. Like free her angel from hell, i hope we goto hell. That is not a sentence i would normally be happy about

Thank you for the summary, and probably a good guess for the story!

It’s a good point that if the shattered Black Soulstone is the reason for the return of Andariel and Duriel, the others should be able to return to. I think, though, that to avoid close repetition of D3 we won’t see much of Belial or Azmodan.

I think there is enough of a hint in the cinematic trailer to support the idea of going to hell for Inarius. I’m with you on that one!

The gates of heaven have been closed to us. So what if we go into the burning hell’s to free Inarius, in return he helps us to banish Lilith to the Void once again.

"Lilith, driven into a mad frenzy by the threat of her children’s extinction, began slaughtering her fellow renegades, both angel and demon alike, leaving Inarius to discover the carnage she had wrought. Bringing his former lover to heel, Inarius found himself unable to kill her he had promised that he would never strike her down or let another do it, and the promise still held truand instead banished her into the Void."

Or how about this we have it all wrong. Lilith actually helps us to fight the demons, as they try to destroy her children. It was not the demons who bring her back. The Demons do not refer to her as “Mother.” Man, this could get interesting.

And Cain returns in the form of a ghost like Kull in D3 and is stationed near the forge. This way each time you craft/salvage/sell or whatever it is in D4, you’ll hear “stay a while and listen” .

Why did the priest willingly go through with the blood summoning?

Because, he was already injured, and locked in a room with an evil priest. There was no way he was getting out alive anyway. Even if he tried to fight, those other two stood no chance against this guy’s power, how could he? His fate was sealed at this point. But also, his curiosity and intrigue for knowledge. He was screwed, might as well witness this crazy summoning while you’re dying?

That’s what I figured anyway.

The motives behind Lilith’s summoning is a interesting mystery.
People seem confident that the priest/necromancer is Rathma himself. Addressing her as blessed mother and the respectful bow suggests there’s a relationship that exists between them.
The ending scene has the feeling of “meet your maker” but literally.

Inarius’ return also makes sense considering his connection to Lilith.

As for the injured scholar sacrificing himself… It’s hard to interpret his emotions exactly. Throughout the cinematic he was powerless.
Finishing the ritual willingly gave him some control in the situation. An attempt to dignify the fate that awaited him.

I thought Blizzard crafted this scene exceptionally well.

I’m of the opinion that the “blessed mother” line is not enough to deduce it’s Rathma. I believe he’s a blood cultist, and that he adresses the creator in such a way out of reverence (just as some IRL say “father in heaven”). In fact, I don’t think Rathma (if somehow alive and present still) would feel there’s anything blessed about his mother …

I think the blood cultists are summoning Lilith to help defeat the Nephalem, and that we will go to Hell to free Inarius with the purpose to fight Lilith.

I love how the whole thing plays out, and this transcription is perfect. Bravo. The cinematic absolutely did an amazing job at communicating emotion. The facial expressions, voice, and body language are all so expertly done. And that music, god i had chills. That horn or whatever it was blaring through really made my skin crawl. It really reminded me of a horror movie.

The final moments of the scholar’s life spent witnessing the creator of all of humanity must have been so surreal yet terrifying. You literally see his pupils dilate, signaling his end of life. He spent his last breath watching his creator, the daughter of hatred herself set foot into the world in all her demonic glory.

He died while watching this, can you imagine what his final thoughts must have been?

I can’t wait to see more cinematics from Diablo IV. Incredible!

Figured he was simply mind controlled by Jon Irenicus’ powerful black-eyed stare. Hence the insistance on opening his eyes.

But…they keep repeating “non-linear story”.

Freeing the angels listed on the last panel on the D4 website (wisdom, hope, justice, etc) could be one path.
