ere it me, I’d go back and remove sockets from the affix pool list entirely – except in cases where special items were supposed to have bonus sockets, above and beyond their normal maximum. Turn gifts into semi-regular drops (and regular drops from bounty caches), adding a single socket to an eligible item, up to the maximum number of sockets supported by that item. So chest pieces would take 3 gifts. Pants would take 2. And so on.

An interesting approach to say the least, could be viable

You mean you don’t play the game because you enjoy math? If I were 50 years younger I would be trying to convince my parents that playing this game was improving my math skills. I suspect such attempts would have been as unsuccessful as my attempts to persuade Myriam to give me a socket in my Traveler’s Pledge.
