Zax´s Item Finding Guide

Hello everyone, my name is Zax and I would like to welcome you to my guide how to find items. Plenty of people struggle to find items so I decided to share my knowledge I acquired over last 20 years to help anyone who is interested and I hope this will be helpfull to new players.

This guide have currently 6 parts but some are under construction:

  • Basic information - you will find here basic introduction and mostly technical stuff how loot in diablo 2 resurrected works.
  • Where to find Items - I will describe all places in game suitable for finding items and many interesting things about them so you can pick best for your characters to farm.
  • Character guides for item finding - I will talk here about every class andand present one signature build with detailed walkthrough usable even for hardcore players and then share some information about others builds you can use. (Sorceress guide is finished, rest will be eventualy added)
  • Item database - database of items with description of their general value and some additional information how they can be used. New player can find there most items to check how valuable tiem they found. (This section is currently under construction)
  • Frequenlty asked question - I will answer here to some frequenlty asked question players are not sure about or after they ask in this topic.
  • Additional Information - I will be posting here mostly graphical stuff with usefull information so people can get it fast without reading whole guide (This section is currently under construction)

--------------------------------------------------------------------

BASIC INFORMATION

BASIC INFORMATION

This part will be little bit technical but not too much. There is definitely more detailed information on internet, I just wanted to share basics in a way that most people can understand it well.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Item types

Item types
Loot in Diablo 2 is divided into several types: Weapons, Armor, Jewelry, Junk and “nodrop” and every monster and object in Diablo have set certain chances to drop
these item types. There is also Gold, but I have it under junk category.

  • Weapons - all one or two handed weapons which can be used to deal physical damage.
  • Armor - helms, chest armor, gloves, boots, belts, shields.
  • Jewelry - Amulets, Rings, Jewels, Charms, Gems and Runes.
  • Junk - Arrows/bolts, keys, potions, throwing potions, Gold, scrolls.
  • Nodrop - this is not item type on itself but calculated chance that monster or object will not drop any item or less items than maximum drop.

Various monsters have different chances for these kind of item types. For example regular ghost type creatures can drop only Junk or jewelry. Practicaly all monsters and objects in game have chance for “no drop”, resulting in not having anything from monster when it is killed.

-------------------------------------------------------------

How to decrease the chance of a no drop

How to decrease the chance of a no drop

If you play online, you can join other players and if you play offline, you can simulate them with /players 1-8 command. Every second player in game decreases “nodrop” from monsters no matter where players in game are. On top of that every player in party and close proximity to kills or clicked objects adds another small bonus decreasing no drop chance even more resulting in bigger chance that something will drop. So for example if two players are in same game and both are in different maps, “no drop” chance is not decreased . But if a third player joins the game, the “no drop”-chance will be decreased. A fourth player will not affect the “no drop”, but a fifth will again decrease it. But if two players in same game play together close to each other, they will both benefit from a decreased “no drop”-chance because of a additional bonus that applies for being in a party with others.

Playing in big parties will result in a lot more dropped items then playing solo, but there is also more players who want to pick up items. Because of that you can often see solo players outside of parties playing on their own. They do it for increased drop but not to share loot. Also getting experience works with similar rules so solo player is also getting XP for more players alone.

Many players prefer to make private or public games called “Split runs” where several players decide who will be farming in certain maps so players can get benefits of increased drop but dont have to share found items with others. I highly suggest to do that if you want more items, because its not fun to hijack games for other players who for example do quests or want to level up and struggle when 4 players in game are doing MF runs instead of doing quests with them.

Offline players can use /Players 1-8 command to simulate online players so they will benefit for every second additional player, meaning that /players 1 is same as /players 2 for example and /players 3 will be first setting increasing number of dropped items by decreasing “no drop” chance. /players X command works for ± two screens around you but it also increases Health of monsters and their damage so its for consideration which setting would be best for you based on strength of your character.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Treassure class (TC)

Treassure class (TC)

The Treasure class (TC) determines which weapon or armor a monster or object can drop. Treassure class of monsters or objects is determined by type of monster, monster level or level of area where object/monster is located. For example: A monster can drop TC3 or TC6 armor. Where TC3 is Quilted Armor and TC6 Hard Leather Armor. If you kill a regular monster who can drop items from TC3 and TC6, the RNG will for example chooses TC6 and Hard Leather armor drops. Amulets, Ring, Jewels, Charms, Gems and Runes do not belong into a any TC. Their drop is based on quality level. You can read more about it further in the guide. If you want to see which items belongs to which TC, you can visit this link:
Treasure Classes - Diablo Wiki

-------------------------------------------------------------

Area level, Monster level and quality level (qlvl)

Area level, Monster level and quality level (qlvl)

Every map in D2R has own set area level and all monsters and majority of objects share that level. So if you are for example in Chaos sanctuary on hell difficulty, it is area level 85. That means that every regular monster and object have that level. Champion monsters have always arealvl+2 and unique monsters and their minions have always arealvl+3. So if for example unique Venom lord spawn in chaos sanctuary, his level will be 85+3= 88.

The Level of monsters and objects are very important as it decides from which Treasure class the dropped items will be picked and most importantly which unique or set items can drop.

All set and unique items have so called quality level (qlvl). If monster or object do not have that level or higher, unique or set item will not drop.

Many items have very high qlvl but some have lower one. Most rare unique items in game belongs to highest TC 87 and they also have qlvl set to 85-87 in many cases. For example spiderweb sash is part of lower elite items TC 63 but unique version of this items is very rare because of qlvl 87, so it drops only from monsters with level 87 and higher.

Some items on other hand have very low qlvl. Tal rasha amulet is considered as elite item but it is possible to drop it even on normal difficulty because amulets do not have TC, they have only qlvl. Tal rasha amulet does have the very low qlvl 26. This means it can already drop from normal act 3 (upper kurast) on boss packs.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Item rarity

Item rarity

Certain items can have multiple versions and which version will drop is decided by rarity. For example Rings and Amulets have multiple unique versions and each one has a different rarity within all unique rings. Thats why you see Nagelring or Manald to drop often while a Stone of Jordan is very rare. When the game decides that a unique item drops it picks all uniqe items of that item type which have a high enough qlvl to drop and then a roll is made between them based on their weighted rarity.

If you are curious which unique items have multiple versions i made a list:

  • Rings
  • Amulets
  • Jewels
  • Phase Blade
  • Spired Helm
  • Sacred Armor
  • Thunder Maul
  • Mighty Scepter
  • Scourge
  • Legendary Mallet

-------------------------------------------------------------

Item Quality

Item Quality

After item type and also TC is chosen, game will make a roll on item quality. Not all items have all quality levels and for example crafted items cannot drop at all and can be only made in horadric cube. Quest items drops only once and will not drop anymore if you complete quest. Horadric cube is exception to this as she can drop again if you lose it. Currently we have these item qualities in game:

  • White - basic item quality, white items can additionaly be low or superior quality. Low quality items will have less durability, defense and damage. Superior weapons can have additional attack rating, + Enhanced damage up to +15% and improved durability. Superior Armor can have enhanced defense +15% and always have top roll on defense and they can also have improved durability.
  • Grey - subclass of white items, only difference is that they have sockets and can be used as runewords. Grey items can be superior quality.
  • Magic - magic items can have magic preffix and affix. They can also have sockets as magical preffix but runewords cannot be made in them.
  • Rare - rare items can have 1-3 rare preffixes and 1-3 affixes at once.
  • Set - set items have several pieces which you can collect to get partial or full set bonuses. Some sets can have unique magical properties you will not find on magic or rare items.
  • Unique - highest item quality possible to drop. Unique items have often unique magical attributes impossible to find on magic/rare or even set items. Every unique item can drop in same game only once. So you cant for example find two Nagelrings (unique Ring) in same game.
  • Crafted - special quality of items. You can create crafted items in Horadric cube with special recipes. Some recipes can have some unique attributes and rest of their magical attributes is same as for rare items.
  • Quest - Quest items can be used only once to complete quests and they cant drop anymore after that. Only exception is Horadric cube. If you lose it, visit Hallf of dead lvl 3 (ACT II) or Travincal(ACT III) and kill council to get it again. There is fun trick how to keep quest weapons and you can make a decent starting weapon for new characters. If you take quests weapon and use Unique upgrade recipe in cube, it will create Unique Hand axe with same magical attributes as the quest item. So you can for example make Horadric Staff Hand Axe.

All weapons and armor with exception of crafted and set items have also 5% chance to spawn as Ethereal. Ethereal Armor will gain 50% enhanced defense and weapons 50% enhanced damage.

-------------------------------------------------------------

How the whole process of loot works:

How the whole process of loot works

I will use example on regular monster. Lets say you are killing monsters in Pit which is area85 zone where all regular monsters have lvl 85. You kill Bone Warrior and game will decide if item will drop. Then there is roll on item type from Armor, Weapon, goods (jewelry) and junk. If you will get roll on junk, mana potion might drop for example. If you get roll on Armor, game will decide from which Treassure class will be armor taken. It starts from highest and every failed attempt will result in lower TC. Lets say you will fail TC87-TC66 and game will pick TC63. Then Spiderweb sash will be picked as it is TC63 item.

Now game rolls item quality and your +%Magic find bonus plays big part in it and it will increase your chances for higher item quality. Lets say your MF helps significantly and game will choose to drop Unique version of item, great right? Well sadly not, because there is one problem and it is qlvl of Arachnid Mesh. Because Pit is area85, all regular monsters in it have level 85. Unique Arachnid Mesh Spiderweb Sash has qlvl 87 and because Bone warrior in Pit has monster level only 85, roll on unique item fails and you will get rare Spiderweb sash instead. Order of quality always go like this Unique->Set->Rare->Magic-White.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Monsters

Monsters

There is several monster types and they have different drops:

  • Regular - you can see them everywhere as they are dominant type. They always drop 0-1 item.
  • Champions - they always drop potions and runes, gold, gem or item of blue or higher quality, never junk or white/grey items. All Champions have improved level +2, so if you will have champion Bone warrior in Pit, his level will be 85+2=87.
  • Unique - they always drop potions and 1 rune, gem or item of blue or higher quality, never junk or white/grey items. All unique monsters have improved level +3, so if you will
have unique Bone warrior in Pit, his level will be 85+3 so 88.
  • Super unique - they have same drop rules as unique monsters but they drop potions with 2 items instead of only 1. All super unique monsters have special name as location where they spawn, in many cases they have special drop.
  • Minion - they follow same drop rules as regular monsters so they can drop anything. Drop is not guaranteed but their level is increased +3 so they can drop items from higher TCs and with higher item level than regular monsters.
  • Quest - Quest monsters have set their own monster level and many of them have special unique drop, they usualy drop multiple items also. They can drop junk, but they dont drop white items. I will describle the interesting ones in detail later.
  • Boss - every ACT has own boss at the end. They have own special loot tables and always drop magic or higher item quality. They cant drop white/grey items but they can drop junk. Bosses have naturaly increased chance to drop Rare, Set or Unique items and can drop up to 6 items. Every boss has also special quest drop but i will talk about that in detail below.

If we will get back to our example with Arachnid Mesh Spiderweb Sash, for example Mephisto on hell difficulty can drop it even when he is in zone with lvl only 83. The reason is that Mephisto has set Monster level higher as boss and his level is 87. So he has high enough level to drop Arachnid Mesh unique. If we take for example most rare Unique item in game “Tyrael´s Might”, it also has item level 87. But even when Mehisto Hell has high enough level to drop it, he will never do it, because Tyraels Might is item type Sacred armor which belongs to TC87 and Mephisto is excluded from dropping items from TC87. Also some super unique monsters have for some reason lowered their TC so for example 3 seal bosses from Chaos Sanctuary have worse loot table then any other unique monster in that location. This is sadly case for many super unique monsters.

-------------------------------------------------------------

How does Magic find work

How does Magic find work

+% magic find bonus can be found on many items in game and it increases chances monsters will drop more Magic, Rare, Set and Unique items. Generaly speaking more MF=better as there is no cap for magic find. But there is diminishing returns for the effect of MF. As you go up with magic find, effect of it will start to be less significant. For example If you have +200% magic find, your chance to find Magic items is 200% higher, Rares 150% higher, Sets 142% higher and for unique items higher by 111%.

So how much MF you need? There is no easy answer really, but generaly speaking as much as possible without significantly slowing your killing speed. Every % of Magic find can decide if you find unique item or not. There is many people who is saying that 200-250% MF is more than enough. It is certainly not bad and if your character is weak and cannot kill fast, it is better to focus on items with more dmg then maxing MF. But if you can kill reasonably well, definitely try to raise MF. People kind of forget that Diminishing returns is affecting unique items more than sets and set items even more than rare items, so having more mf doesnt have so low impact on sets as it has on unique items.

Ok so lets say you have chance to increase your MF, but to what number? It really depends on what are you running, but generaly speaking I would suggest having 300-500% MF. It is certainly not so easy to achieve that with all characters and builds so keep that in mind. Just to clarify, Magic find doesnt impact number of items dropping, item types or Runes. Is there any negative effect to have a lot of MF? Actualy yes there is but only in case when you are trying to find white/grey items.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Magic find in Party and on Mercenary

Magic find in Party and on Mercenary

If you play in party, it is important who has last hit on monsters because the last hit carry Magic find of player who made the kill. You can do 90% of damage to boss with 400% MF but if someone else with 0% MF has last hit on boss killing him, drop will be based on his MF, not yours.

In case of mercenaries are both yours and mercenary´s MF counted together if mercenary has last hit killing the monster. So if both of you have 150 % MF and last hit has merc, drop will be based on 300% MF. If you have last hit, MF from mercenary is ignored so it will be only 150%.

-------------------------------------------------------------

High level areas vs bossses

High level areas vs bossses

Most people at start of season prefer to hunt bosses for items because their increased chance to drop set and unique items provide great chance to drop something even with lower Magic find on equip. So bosses are great for getting a lot of items in short period of time. Disadvatage is that most of them dont have access to highest TCs so they cannot drop most elite items. From this reasons are farmed areas with high level, preferably 85. Some of them are good to clear completely if you are able to do it on higher player setting but thats usualy prefered mostly for better chance to get runes. Regular monsters have significantly lower chance to drop unique or set items, so it is better to target only Unique monsters/champions (elites) on /players 1 setting. Because elite monsters have also significantly lower chance to drop rare/set or Unique items vs bosses, higher %MF bonus is more important in high level areas. So it might be fine to MF with 100-200% on bosses , but for area85 zones is better to have 250-350+% MF.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Rune Finding

Rune Finding

As I previously said, MF doesnt affect number or quality of dropped runes. So what does it affect then? More players in game is decreased chance of “nodrop”. Less no drop=more items=more runes. Best thing you can do to increase chance to get runes is to kill high numbers of monsters fast, preferably with more players in game. Some monsters have also different loot table than others so it is beneficial to focus them as they cannot drop armor or weapon which increases chance to drop items like runes from them. Some unique quests monsters have also significantly increased chance to drop better runes.

Good source of runes can be also objects which drops items just like monsters. Number of dropped items from objects is significantly increased with more players in game. Objects have some limitations tho and every act has cap for runes you can find from objects. It is:

ACT I Hell - Vex
ACT II Hell - Lo
ACT III Hell - Ber
ACT IV Hell - Cham
ACT V Hell - Zod

You can find info about best places where to find runes under “Where to find items” category.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Objects

Objects

Magic find affects almost all clickable objects but not all of them. Majority of clickable objects in Diablo 2 can drop 0-4 items, locked objects can drop even more. Then we have Golden/sparkly chests and so called Superchests. Both have special drop system based on patterns and they can often drop a lot of items at once. They have their own chance for item quality so your Magic find does not affect them. Superchest might be great source of runes mostly offline as it is hard to make runs on them online without constant high player setting. Weapon and armor Racks and Stands are special kind of objects and they are also not affected by MF. You can find some additional info about objects under “Where to find items” category".

-------------------------------------------------------------

ACT Boss Quest drops

ACT Boss Quest drops

Every ACT boss has increased chance to drop Rare/Set/Unique items on first kill with every character. Not just that, quest drop also drop only jewelry or Magic or higher quality items and there is no junk as on normal kill. Quest drop will happen only once for every character on first boss kill. If you play with party of friends, its best that you bring Boss to very low health and then everyone leave so one person left can kill boss for quest drop. Process is repeated with another person creating next game. That way for example party of 4 players can have 4x quest drop and everyone has their own.

-------------------------------------------------------------

ACT Boss Quest drop bugging

ACT Boss Quest drop bugging

Diablo 2 has a bug which allows you to get quest drop repeatedly. Killing for quest bug is done by characters who didnt complete quest kill yet in games created by character with quest being already previously completed. This results in significantly better chance to get good items, but it is limiting your character progression as if for example you want to keep farming Mephisto Hell on quest bug, you cant ever complete the quest or you will lose it.

Commonly used tactic how to do quest bug is to create game with character who already done quest before and then join with your main character who will kill the boss with quest active but impossible to complete in that game. This tatic cannot be used offline, quest bugging works only online.

Terror Zones

Terror zones significantly changed mechanics of chances to drop loot but it is alot of changes to cover here so i made separate guide for terror zones which you can find here:

WHERE TO FIND ITEMS

WHERE TO FIND ITEMS

This section will be focused on all locations where you can go to find items and also some uncommon ways like Rushing others, Gamble, and other ways how to get items.

Diablo 2 Resurrected has 3 difficulties and most players do MF/rune farming on Hell difficulty, but this is a guide for even new players so I would like to mention where you can find some stuff even on Normal and Nightmare. This section will not be only about unique/set items or runes as there are many desirable items you can find and use.

Generally speaking, most monsters in area83 and higher maps have access to TC87 so they can drop any weapon or armor type. But because monster level decides which unique/set can drop, not all monsters in area levels 83, 84, and 85 can drop everything. You always have to add +2 for champions and +3 for unique monsters.

There are only 3 items with the highest Quality Level 87: Arachnid Mesh, Tyrael´s Might, and Azurewrath. So you can see even unique monsters in area83 maps can drop almost
everything because they will have level 86. It is, of course better to focus on the area85 map, but some people might prefer to farm various maps to prevent doing the same thing all the time so I included all area levels 83-85.

I’m also including information about monster types and preferred elements for a map to farm there effectively. It doesn’t mean it is impossible with other elements but they will face immune monsters, highly resistant monsters, or various challenges making these places less desirable.

NORMAL DIFFICULTY

NORMAL DIFFICULTY

Objects

Objects

Click every object you will see as you can find items from them just like from monsters and MF works on most of them.

Golden chests

Golden chests

You can find these chests usualy at end of dungeons and if you are playing on more players in game, they can drop huge amount of items at once.
Imgur: The magic of the Internet

Coldcrow

Coldcrow

Coldcrow is not exactly great monster for item finding, but she can be farmed if you are missing low level uniques, because they have significantly lower chance to drop on
higher difficulties. She can be found in Cave dungeon (Cold plains).
Imgur: The magic of the Internet

The Countess

The Countess

The Countess is good sources of runes up to Ral because of her special rune drop. That can be very useful for making low level rune words early as runes mostly starts dropping in ACT II. Higher player setting makes her rune drop worse as other items might be dominant so farm her solo or on /players 1. Runes will usualy starts to drop in ACT II so having some early on to make for example Stealth Runeword might be very useful.

Andariel

Andariel

Final boss of ACT I. Andariel can be farmed for some low level set and unique items or even som decent rare items before you go ACT II. She is not hard and antidotes are usualy
enough to survive fight with her without troubles. She will always drops 1 gem of middle quality and two chipped gems on her first quest drop.

Secret Cow Level

Secret Cow Level

Secret cow level cannot be opened before you kill last boss of ACT V Baal, but you can enter if someone else will open it. Cow level is good for finding good base for spirit or insight. 4 socket swords and polearms cannot drop there but they have high level enough to have 4 sockets if you take them to Larzuk and do socketing reward or use recipe in cube to add sockets. If someone is doing cow level for you in full game it can be also good source of some runes for spirit and insight runewords, gems, jewels and charms. If you have high level, cows can be also interesting for you because normal cows can drop good low level pvp jewels and charms. If you are starting from nothing, you can visit cow level game and go in with lvl 1 to gather some equip to sell for good starting money or save it for later.

Vendors ACT II

Vendors ACT II

If you are Necromancer, Paladin or Sorceress, Drognan sell good item bases withs cokets and also skills you would use for some rune words. Fara can sell socket helms, armor and shield and occasionaly gloves or boots with Magic find. You can also try gamble by Elzix to buy gloves or boots with MF bonus, I usualy do it with atleast level 20.

Tal Rasha Tombs

Tal Rasha Tombs

If you have fast character, Tal rasha tombs provides 6 Golden chests you can keep farming to get some basic stuff like charms, sometimes even set or uniques. It is best in games with more players. But Tal rasha tombs are usualy used just for leveling

Vendors ACT III

Vendors ACT III

You can buy staves with teleport charges from Ormus.

Lower Kurast/Upper kurast

Lower Kurast/Upper kurast

Both Kurasts have a lot of objects, it is a good place with more players in game. If you for some reason are scared of going further on Hardcore with low resistances, you
can do these locations to get some gems, runes, charms, rings or amulets which should help.

Council Members

Council Members

Council Members at Travincal usualy drops multiple items, they are like mini bosses. You can also get some charms and middle quality gems from them sometimes.

Mephisto

Mephisto

Mephisto on normal difficulty can drop some usefull set/unique items and can be repeated quite well as second level of Durance of Hate is small on Normal.

Diablo

Diablo

Diablo has slightly better drop than Mephisto, but unless you have build with very high dmg killing him fast, repeating him is not really great idea as he is pretty deadly
on Normal.

Baal

Baal

Baal on Normal can drop all items from that difficulty and also several very good items from exceptional unique items. If you think he is waste of time, check the examples of items he can drop: Blade of Alibaba, Chance Guards, Dwarf Star, Infernostride, Moser´s Blessed Circle, Tal Rasha Amulet, Stone of Jordan, Raven Frost, Ribcracker, Rockstopper, String of Ears, The Peasant Crown, Titan´s Revenge and Waterwalks, Tal rasha amulet. So as you can see plenty of useful items even on normal difficulty. Only downside is long way to him but he is cherry on top when you do baalruns for experience so there is no reason to not visit him after.

---------------------------------------

NIGHTMARE DIFFICULTY

NIGHTMARE

Vendors ACT I NM

Vendors ACT I NM

You can buy wands with Life tap or Lower resist charges from Akara. Vendors will no longer sell grey items on Nightmare, but you can keep checking them for som some upgrades to your characters, You can even buy some items with decent magic find bonus from vendors.

The Countess

The Countess

Countess on Nightmare has special rune drop just as on Normal and she can drop runes from El-Io/Ko, but runes above Io are much rarer. She can be good source of runes to make runewords Spirit, Rhyme, Insight or Lore.

Andariel

Andariel

Andariel NM is not especialy great because her level is quite lower than Baal normal so she cannot really drop much more than Baal and cant drop even some items he can. Andariel drops jewelry quite often so she is great for finding Stone of Jordan. On Hell has SoJ same rarity as Bul Kathos´s Ring. So if game roll highest unique rarity you have still 1/2 chance it will be SoJ. On nightmare it will be always SoJ, because Bul Katho´s Ring cant drop there as his level is too high. So if you really want to maximize your chances to find SoJ, Andariel NM is place to go. But you will not drop there many other useful items sadly.

Secret Cow level

Secret Cow level

Secret Cow level on Nightmare can be run to get some Jewelry or Gems. If you can farm cow level on more players it can be decent place to find some mid runs as regular cows can drop runes up to Ist. Cows are also great for weapon or armor bases for some Runewords.

Lower Kurast/upper Kurast

Lower Kurast/upper Kurast

Lower and upper Kurast offer a lot of objects you can keep clicking to get some loot. It should be done preferably in games with more players.

Mephisto

Mephisto

Mephisto NM is good place where you can find some basic equip for your character. There is plenty of exceptional items which he can drop. First character-speficic uniques like Oculus or Herald of Zakarum (Hoz), other items used for magic find like War Travelers or Skullde´s Ire and some decent weapons and armor. Mephisto is really good stop before you will push Act V or Hell or if your Character on Hell is too weak to do Mehisto runs. Durance of Hate can have Stygiand dolls so if you play hardcore, be aware of that as they are there often in big numbers and if you kill them near you, explosion can do a lot of damage to you or even kill you.

Hellforge

Hellforge

Hellforge NM can get you decent rune, highest you can get there is Um. Do not ever do the quest in game with other players you dont know as they can steal the reward from quest form you. Also try to avoid players who ask HF for rush, because you can always find some nice people who will help you for free and rune from HF can help you to improve your character or allow you to buy something from other online.

Diablo

Diablo

People usualy do Mephisto Nightmare for some bacis stuff but diablo is also possible to farm. He is just little bit harder because Chaos sactuary is not fun place to be, but he is always in same place so he can be found easier for some character who dont have teleport.

Worldstone Keep lvl 1-3

Worldstone Keep lvl 1-3

Worldstone keep has many various monster types on nightmare with guest monsters. It is great place to farm if you cant survive or kill bosses on hell difficulty yet. There are often legions of fetish warriors and if you play on more players it is good place for finding some runes or other interesting items. If you play Hardcore, be careful, because souls shooting lightning are very often here.

Baal

Baal

Baal NM can drop plenty of good items, all unique and sets from Nightmare and also few elite items. Most importantly Harlequin Crest Shako. Getting to Baal require some time as you need to kill his waves of minions first, but because Baalruns are done also for experience, its a good to finish baalrun by killing Baal. Baal is not that formidabble enemy but he has a lot of HP. Throne room can be very dangerous as souls and dols can both spawn there.

Mausoleum

Mausoleum

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Magic, Holy
Mausoleum can be found in Burial grounds if you follow road from Cold plains. There are only two monster types spawning in Mausoleum, Skeletons and Hungry dead, both quite slow monsters, Immune to lightning. Mausoleum has many objects and Golden chest but drop from objects is limited to only Vex rune in ACT I. Mausoleum is one of the easiets area85 maps, but monster density and number of elite monsters here is not so great. It is also harder to navigate because place is big and has many rooms. You can always kill Blood Raven outside too. She has high level so she can even drop Arachnid Mesh, but her TC is very low only 66.

Crypt

Crypt

Area level 83
Monster types: Undead
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Magic, Holy
Crypt is in the Burial grounds together with Mausoleum so I think its convinient to go here also. Crypt is basicly same as Mausolum but has has lower area level 83. Crypt has same issue with low monster density, but because monsters are same here, its usualy worth visiting both Masolum and Crypt together.

New area85 place in 2.4 patch. It is small map with Golden chest but really not worth visiting as it is quite far from Stony field or Dark wood Waypoints and has various immune monsters. Number of elite monsters was increased from 2-3 to 3-5 in 2.4 patch.

The Countess

The Countess

Level: 82
Monster types: Demon
Prefered elements: Lightning, Poison, Magic, Physical, Holy
The Countess on Hell difficulty is great for runes. She has own special rune drop and can drop runes up to Ist with significantly higher chance than anywhere else. She can also drop runes up to Lo but it is much more rare. Still quite higher chance than from other monsters. Since 1.11 version of game she drops special Key of Terror which you need for Uber tristram and she is ony monster in game who can drop it. Countess is immune to Fire and Cold and her pack of minions is immune to cold. Path to last level of tower is quite long so you will need character with teleport to farm her. It can also be difficult as ghost and Dark Archers who are in tower are dangerous monsters. Its good to kill ghosts on the way as they have good chance to drop jewelry and runes. If you cant kill Countess on your own because of her immunities, you will need strong mercenary to kill her.

The Pit level 1-2

The Pit level 1-2

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon
Prefered elements: Poison, Magic, Physical, Lightning+Physical, Holy
Pit has very good monster density and both floors provide good amount of elite monsters. Difficulty is not that high here, only Dark archers can be quite deadly but they arenot always here. There is also Golden chest at second level. Pit is favourite place to visit with Berserk Barbarian build. Can be also decent place for Javazon with high enough physical dmg to kill lightning immune archers. Pit can be found in Tamoe Highland by following road from Outer Cloister WP.

Andariel

Andariel

Level: 75 (TC69)
Monster types: Demon
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Magic, Holy
Andariel on Hell can drop all exceptional unique items and also few elite uniques. She is quite good at droping jewelry so she is great if you want unique/set rings and Amulets. You need preferably character with teleport to get to her. When you kill her, everything in close proximity dies so dont forget to check the rest of Map in death circle if something didnt drop from other monsters. Andariel can be killed with pretty much anything, but she is highly resistant to poison and has also quite high physical resistance. She is also significantly vulnerable to Fire having -50% fire resistance on Hell so builds with fire damage can kill her very fast.

Secret Cow level

Secret Cow level

Area level: 81 (TC87)
Monster types: Animal
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Magic, Physical
Secret Cow level is mostly farmed for Runes as there is great number of cows in one map and location is quite easily accesible. Cows dont have too high resistances and are not immune to anything. Their damage is strong and they have quite fast attacks. If you let them surround you, it can result in quick death as they will swarm you with many attacks. Their life is quite high, but they dont have block which makes it easier to kill them even for melee characters. Cows have good chance to drop jewelry and their nodrop chance is quite low so they drop a lot of items. They are also good for finding any socketed items. Their TC is 87 so they can suprisingly drop some elite unique or set items like Death´s Fathom for example. Regular Cows have monster level 81 so for some elite uniques you will need their unique monster version to drop it. It is most effective to run cows on higher player setting. Even two additional players will increase drop significantly. Secret Cow level is also only place in game where you can find Cow king set. Whole set is not that epic, but boots are actualy very good. You can find there Cow king too, he is located in Wooden structure with his minions. His drop is quite extraordinary and I would say most unique in whole game. He has quest drop with several items and Stamina potions. After that his drop has only several items of Magic or higher quality, it is basicly boss drop but what is so unique about it is fact that you can use Find item skill on the body as Barbarian to get second drop with multiple items. Best builds for clearing cows are the one with high area dmg.

ACT II

ACT II

Stony Tomb level 1-2

Stony Tomb level 1-2

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Animal
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Physical
New area85 place in 2.4 patch with increased number of elite monsters on second level from 1-2 to 4-6. Stony tomb can be found in first location outside of Lut Gholein. Placement is random but its usualy not that far. Majority of monsters in Stony tomb is Lighting immune so it is great place for Cold or Fire builds. Fire has slight advantage as super unique monster at second level is always Cold immune. Second level has often several weapon racks and armor stands and change to area level made them highest ones in game with item level 84 so it is posssible some decent unique or set items from them. This can be quite effective way how to find certain items offline with static map. Super unique Creeping Feature mummy at second floor cannot drop items from higher Treasure class than 78, But his minions can.

Maggot Lair level 1-3

Maggot Lair level 1-3

Area level: 84+85
Monster types: Animal
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Magic
Maggot Lair is probably most hated map by majority of player base but in my opinion highly overlook as great place for finding items. Maggot Lair 1 and 2 are area84 and third level is 85. All 3 levels together can have 14-18 elite monsters. There are no cold or fire immune monsters so fire or cold sorceress is best here, but Bonemancer with enigma can run this location quite well also as narrow paths helps with Bonespear aiming. I myself run Maggot Lair with Fireball sorceress as nothing can beat her there but farming this place require to have good equip. Maggot Lair is definitely not place for everyone and it can be tough without teleport. Every level of Maggot lair also has few Superchests so dont forget to open them, they can drop runes up to Lo. Be careful on Hardcore mode, because Scarabs can do high elemental damage at close range with their charged bolts.

Ancient Tunnels

Ancient Tunnels

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Animal
Prefered elements: Cold, Physical, Lighting+conviction
Ancient tunnels (AT) is quite famous and frequently visited area85 location for item finding. Monster here have magic, fire, poison and lightning immunity so it can be run well with cold sorceress or Elemental druid. Golden chest is also located here. Ancient tunnels is randomly generated in Lost city so it might be harder to find it.

Arcane Sanctuary

Arcane Sanctuary

Area level: 79
Monster types: Undead, Demon
Prefered elements: Lightning, Poison, Magic, Holy
Arcane sanctuary(AS) is not high level area but it is considered as very good place for finding runes because you can find here only 3 types of monsters and one of them are ghosts. All ghost type creatures have naturaly higher chance to drop jewelry. It is important to kill ghosts above the floor because if you kill them outside of it, they will not drop anything. You have 4 different paths in AS and at end of one of them is Summoner. He is only one in game who can drop Key of Hate, required item for opening Uber tristram portals. Arcane sanctuary can be farmed very well by characters with lightning damage as monster here are immune to only physical, cold and fire. Loot from ghost is significantly better at more players so if you are focused on finding runes here, try to increase player count in game. All paths with exception of Summoner ends with 3 super chest which can drop a lot of items, but only max Lo rune.

Video with demonstration from Arcane Sanctuary made by Warth3ory

Duriel

Duriel

Level: 88 (TC72)
Monster types: Demon
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Magic, Holy
Duriel is not exactly great boss to run because his loot is often just bunch of junk. It is sometimes so bad that he will drop only scrolls of town portal. He still has decent chance for jewelry so he might be interesting choice for finding Unique Rainbow Facet Jewels. But finding him is little bit problematic. If you really want to farm him for that, you should consider using character who will quest bug him. And because you will never complete his quests, you will always see right tomb in quest log. If you want to know how to quest bug bosses, you can find the guide in basic information section. Duriel Hell has lvl 88 and can drop items from TC72 so he can definitely drop better items than Andariel. You should preferably use caster class for Duriel as he is using Holy freeze aura slowing attack speed of melee characters.

ACT III

ACT III

Arachnid Lair

Arachnid Lair

Area level: 85
Monster types: Animal
Prefered elements: Cold, Magic
New area85 map in 2.4 Patch and honestly great place because its directly next to Spider Forest Waypoint. It makes it excelent place to farm for characters without teleport. There is several problems tho. Physical resistance of spiders and maggots who can also spawn here is quite high so build with not enough damage will struggle here, also Maggots can cause huge problems with their younglings if eggs are not destroyed fast. Arachnid Lair is also quite small so it doesnt provide alot of space to move around or hit well some skills. All monsters in Arachnid Lair have Cold resistance 0 so it is perfect place for Cold damage builds. Its a lot more safe place to go than ancient tunnels for hardcore cold sorceress as you dont have to teleport around to find it as in Lost City. Arachnid Lair has Golden chest too. Number of elite monsters was increased from 4-5 to 6-8 in 2.4 patch.

Video with demonstration from Arachnid Lair made by Warth3ory

Swampy Pit Level 1-3

Swampy Pit Level 1-3

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Cold, Magic, Physical
New area85 map in 2.4 Patch. 3 levels of fun with Undead Stygian Dolls and Gloams and one Golden chest at the end. Swampy pit is very close to waypoint and has good density
of monsters on first two levels so thats great. But monsters who can spawn here makes this map very hard. First and second level of Swampy Pit has increased number of elite monsters from 2-5 to 6-8 in 2.4 patch.

Disused Fane, Ruined Temple, Forgotten Reliquary

Disused Fane, Ruined Temple, Forgotten Reliquary

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Lightning, Poison, Physical
New area85 map in 2.4 Patch. Very small maps but tight entrances between rooms can provide strategic positions for Melee character builds. Monsters here are quite physical resistant tho. There is good amount of objects in some temples and monsters are honestly not that hard. All 3 temples have increased number of elite monsters from 2-2 to 4-4 in 2.4 patch. Temples are one of few places where lighting builds can farm without issues.

Forgotten Temple, Ruined Fane, Disused Reliquary

Forgotten Temple, Ruined Fane, Disused Reliquary

Area level: 85
Monster types: Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Poison, Physical
Another 3 temples and these were already area 85 before. Very small map layout in combination with very dangerous monsters with high resistances and several different immunities makes this place not a really good place to visit. It can be fun challenge to farm here but options with who are quite limiting. Every temple has 2 elite monsters and I cant begin to imagine that blizzard will raise elite density there as it would make this place hell on earth with archers, vipers and scarabs.

Sewer Levels 1-2

Sewer Levels 1-2

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Animal
Prefered elements: Fire, Physical
First level of sewers is raised to area85 in 2.4 Patch and can have 6-7 elite monsters and second level 0-3. Sewers is home to some undead monsters, feeders and bat demons.
Sewers have quite high number of objects and one golden chest. Undead Stygians dolls spawn in sewers so melee characters might struggle. Greater mummies can also keep resurrecting them on top of that. General density of monsters is not that great, but second level has several Superchests. Because there is plenty of undeads here and dolls, it might be good to farm here with Act 5 barbarian mercenary using Lawbringer or azurewrath with Sanctuary aura.

Kurast Super Chest

Kurast Super Chest
Lower Kurast Superchest are quite famous, mostly farmed on Singleplayer/offline, because it is most effective to do them on maximum player count, Lower Kurast can spawn with 6 of them being in two huts with fire between them. Some other super chests can be found in tall or small buildings in Kurast Bazaar and Upper Kurast but the ones which are usualy farmed the most are in Lower Kurast as you can generate map with Waypoint very close to all 6 of them.

So why exactly is this good place? Super chests have chance to generate huge number of items in single drop. They work little bit differenty than normal objects as they are not affected by magic find. Their drop is not completely random as they have certain number of patterns and one patters is always picked out of ± 65 000. If chest is locked, there is another over 65 000 different patters. It was discovered over the years that certain fixed number of patterns have always same items in it including rune and because there is good number of patterns with high runes and you can pop all 6 superchests in matter of 20 seconds, you have quite a good chance to get high runes eventualy. Their maximum rune drop is Ber and every player setting will results in different patters. That is why it is not so effective to run it online, because for example if you will farm them solo, number of pattern with high runes is significantly lower or there is not even one. So is it even usefull to go there online? Sure, if you have full game, you can visit it and maybe you will be lucky. But there is currently a lot people going there as its well known in public. I would like to also mention that superchest drops a lot of other good stuff like charms, jewels, amulets and rings.

Weapon/Armor racks

Weapon/Armor racks

Armor and weapon racks can be clicked to get armor or weapon. They are not affected by magic find, but it was discovered that they tend to be set to specific items in every map layout. This can be used to make runs on these racks. If you do several runs on them, you should notice item types which drops more often than others. If it is the desirable item you would like to have in Unique/set version or even socket one, you can keep doing runs on them. If you are not happy with item which drops there frequently, you can reset map by going different difficulty and try again. Keep in mind that this trick is usable only offline as your map is different every game in online mode. The weapon and armor racks are close to lower kurast super chests so you can run them together with superchests. But there are in various other places. Some can be found in Nihlathak temple and very high ones are newely in Stony tomb.
Imgur: The magic of the Internet

Kurast objects

Kurast objects

Lower and Upper Kurast have plenty of clickable objects which can give you a lot of loot based on how many players is in game. It is most effective to do runs on them in offline mode where you can set number of players to 7/8. Sometimes it can be also farmed in online mode if you find games with more players or do split MF running with a group. It is alternate way which is more accesible online than super chests and you can get a lot of jewelry from objects. I spend quite a good time testing these objects and they are one of the best places to get high runes. These objects are also affected by your Magic find so you can get some uniques and sets from them.

Travincal Council

Travincal Council

Council Level: 85 (TC78)
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Poison, Magic, Physical
Council members in travincal are usualy being farmed for High runes or for Gold with gold find character build. They have mini boss drop, always dropping magical or higher quality armor/weapons, some junk, gold and Jewelry. They have quite high chance to drop jewelry and Gold so they are great source of charms, jewels, gems and runes and unique rings/amulets if you have good MF. They can drop 0-4 items and their highest Rune drop is Cham. Council Members have two types and they are immune to Lightning or Fire, sometimes you can even see immunity to cold because of their abilities. They are very easily accesible from Travincal Waypoint, but killing them might be harder for undergeared characters. They can drop similar stuff as Mephisto as their TC is same, but they have lower monster level 85 while Mephisto has 87. Most effective farming of Council members can be done by Barbarian with Find Item. If you are succesful with Find item, you can get secondary drop of 4 items and because Find item doesnt have “nodrop” chance.

Durance of Hate level 1-3

Durance of Hate level 1-3

Area level: 83
Monster types: Undead, Demon
Prefered elements: Fire, Magic, Holy
All 3 levels of Durance of Hate are area83 maps so unique monsters here can drop everything from game with exception of Tyrael´s Might, Azurewrath and Arachnid Mesh but Mephisto at the end can drop arach and Azurewrath. Majority of monsters here is undead and Durance of Hate is often full of exploding Stygian dolls so it is not that easy to farm it. ACT V Mercenary with Lawbringer Sword can help against stygian dolls to keeps them in distance from you. There are definitely better places where you can MF especially now with changes in 2.4 patch, but since unique and champions monsters can drop majority of items in here and Mephisto is commonly farmed boss, take opportunity and kill elite monsters you will see while going to Mephisto. Durance of hate has also huge number of clickable objects but they cannot be run so easily as ones in Lower kurast because of map layout and difficult monsters blocking you. Durance of Hate lvl 1 and 2 has both 5-7 elite monsters.

Mephisto

Mephisto

Level: 87 (TC78)
Monster types: Demon
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Magic, Physical, Holy
Mephisto hell is probably most frequently farmed monster in game. He can drop plenty of good stuff, but not the most elite Unique items and set pieces. He is quite easy to kill with sorceress because of trick you can use on him but you need skill with range. If you lead him to pool of blood and go on other side in certain distance from him, he cant touch you and you can kill him with spells or range attack. Just be carefull with your mercenary, he can sometimes attract his attention and it will make him shoot spells at you. There is more interesting stuff on Durance of Hate level 3. There are also some council members in the middle and two on sides and they have just as good drop as the councils in Travincal so you can kill them for some additional loot. Also dont forget to kill any unique monster on this level, in most cases it will be Vampires Lords. They have bigger loot table than Mephisto himself as their TC is higher. After you kill Mephisto, always check the chest behind him as it is Super chest and it can drop a lot of items. If you want to keep running Mephisto, always go to Act IV after you kill him so you start new game from there. Walking from lower side of Act III town map is slower than using WP from Act IV to go Durance of Hate 2 WP.

ACT IV

ACT IV

Plains of Despair

Plains of Despair

Area level: 83
Monster types: Undead, Demon
Prefered elements: Magic, Poison, Holy
Plains of Despair is not exactly nice place to be because of various immunities and chance to spawn with Souls but I still mention it as it has interesting encounter. Izual can be found here. He can drop items from TC 78 like Mephisto but his drop is usualy bad. The reason why I mention him is his aura of death after he is killed. Everything in quite a big range around him will die. This can be used well in game with more player to lure a lot of monsters close to him and they will all die if you kill Izual. Plains of Despair can also spawn with two types of ghost type monsters: Souls and Finger Mages and both have increased chance to drop runes.

City of the Damned

City of the Damned

Area level: 84
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Magic
City of the Damned is quite interesting location because it is Area84 and can have 8-10 elite monsters and also has Waypoint. Unique monsters here can drop anything and I can definitely confirm that as this is one of two places where I found Tyrael´s Might. Monster Immunities makes this location not realy desirable for majority of builds, but it can be run quite well with hammerdin or Berserk Barbarian. One interesting thing I noticed here are small Vile childs spawned by Vile mothers. They normaly dont drop items, but if you use Find item on them, they actualy have loot and If I am not mistaken, they should have same level and TC as their Mothers. So if you discover unique Vile mothers with minions, you can let them spawn as many Flesh beasts as you want, kill them and use Find item on them while all of them will have higher monster level then regular monsters in City of Damned.

River of Flame

River of Flame

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Magic
River of Flame can spawn with 6-7 elite monsters. Not many people MF here because there are several monster types wih different elemental immunities which make this map
complicated for many build. Also several monster types here have big Health pool and because Maggots and Vile mothers can spawn here, it is hell to move around for anyone
without teleport or Leap. River Of Flame has still two interesting things. 0-4 super chests can be spawned here base on map layout and they can drop runes up to Cham. It is usable basicly only for offlfine mode where you can repeat same static map. There is also Hellforge but I will take about it more below. Hellforge is guarded by Hephasto the Armorer. He has actualy highest chance in game to Drop Zod rune. Hephasto has lvl 88 and can drop loot from TC84 so he sadly cannot drop most elite items. What a letdown for a monster with such high level in area85 zone. He is tough enemy but if you want to farm something interesting for a change, you can try him together with River of flame and chaos sanctuary for example as all these places are close to each other.

Hell Hellforge

Hell Hellforge

Hellforge Quest on Hell can be good source of runes if you can rush characters on your own with 2 or more game copies. Or if you have commmunity of people who can rush each other preferably in classic game mode. Dont give others your Hellforge quest for rush and if they ask for it, find someone else who will rush you for free instead as it is not
worth loosing good rune.Hellforge can drop rune Hel-Gul. Be carefull to do quest alone also so nobody will steal it from you. If you are trying to rush mules in classic, all you have to do is to get them to act 4 hell and then transfer character to Expansion to get access to act IV. If classic rushing is not and option, you have to find someone who is doing Baal quest in ACT V and be in party with him when person kills baal on quest. You will get the quests even by just standing in town and be in party, but you cannot enter Throne room on your own because ancients quest cannot be completed unless you are level 20 on normal or 40 on nightmare. Strategy on nightmare is same, you have to again find someone who is doing Baal quests NM so you can go to hell.

Chaos Sanctuary

Chaos Sanctuary

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon
Prefered elements: Poison, Magic, Physical, Lightning+Conviction, Holy
Favourite place for hammerdins and newly probably for Fist of heavens build. Finger Mages here have higher chance to drop runes because they dont drop armor/weapons. Chaos Sanctuary has between 6-7 elite monsters and additional super unique Seal monsters. These dont have same drop as normal unique or champion monsters in chaos as they have only access to TC84 items instead of 87 like other elites in Chaos. When you activate all seals, everything close to pentagram in the middle dies. This is commonly used
trick to get loot from monsters without actualy killing them on your own. Keep in mind that your Magic find doesnt affect these drops because you didnt kill the monsters. When you open all seals, Diablo spawn in the middle of pentagram but I will talk about him below. Chaos sanctuary is not an easy place at all, mostly because oblivion knights can cast curses making your life miserable.

Diablo

Diablo

Level: 94 (TC 84)
Monster types: Demon
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Magic, Physical, Holy
Final boss of ACT IV. Diablo has level 94 and can drop loot from TC84 so even he cannot drop most elite items. Map layout of chaos sanctuary and part of River of flame to get to him is always almost the same so he is quite well accessible even for characters without teleport. Because Diablo has bugged lighting hose skill, you can stand close to him and it wont do any damage to you on NM and Hell. But be carefull with the firestorm as it does quite a lot of damage. Diablo has high enough level so Grand charms from him can be skillers with +45 Life so if he drops Grand charm, definitely keep it for cubing it with Pgems.

ACT V

Eldritch the Rectifier+Shenk the Overseer

Eldritch the Rectifier+Shenk the Overseer

Level: 83+84
Monster types: Demon
Prefered elements: Fire, Lightning, Poison, Magic, Physical, Holy
These two are both very close to first ACT V Waypoint and both can be farmed well with same build as they are cold immune. Eldritch has lvl 84 and TC84, Shenk has lvl 83 and TC84. They cannot drop most elite items because of their level and TC, but they are still good targets because they are close to each other and they are super unique monsters so they drop two items instead of one as normal unique monsters.

Tresh Socket

Tresh Socket

Level: 84
Monster types: Animal
Prefered elements: Fire, Lightning, Poison, Magic, Physical
Another super unique monster who is sometimes being farmed. He is immune to cold, has level 84 and TC87 so he can drop all elite items but doesnt have level high enough to drop some unique items with higher quality level. He can be found outside of entrance to Crystalline passage so you either have to go from there or from Arreat Plateau.

Abaddon

Abaddon

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon
Prefered elements: Lightning with conviction, Holy
New area85 in 2.4 patch, map Layout is smaller but packed with high density of monsters and number of elite monsters here was increased from 3-4 to 6-8 in 2.4 patch. Golden super chest is at the end and it is one of 5 best chests in game as it can drop items from TC 87. That means it can drop almost all unique and set items in game. Abaddon has horrible monster combinations with many immunities and most of them cannot be broken. Blood lords, Undead Stygian Dolls and succubus casting Amplify damage is deadly combination of monsters spawning here sometimes so it is definitely no-go zone for any hardcore character.

Pit of Acheron

Pit of Acheron

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Lightning
New area85 in 2.4 patch, map Layout is smaller but packed with high density of monsters and number of elite monsters here was increased from 3-4 to 6-8 in 2.4 patch. Golden super chest is at the end and it is one of 5 best chests in game as it can drop items from TC 87. Pit of Acheron doesnt have Undead Stygian dolls like Abaddon so it is much more friendly but it is still dangerous place because of many other monsters. There are no lightning immune monsters so this is perfect place for any lighting damage build.

Frozen River

Frozen River

Area level: 83
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Fire
Frozen river is very hard map full of very dangerous monsters. But it is interesting place for two reasons. Two monster types, Gloams and Ghost can spawn here and they both have higher chance to drop runes so Frozen river can be solid place for rune finding as monster densitiy is high here with additional Evil urns spawning more elites. Super Unique monster Frozenstein at the end has same drop as Pindleskin as he has monster level 86 and drop from TC87. Basicly only build with fire damage can farm this place reasonably well.

Glacial Trail

Glacial Trail

Area level: 83
Monster types: Undead, Animal
Prefered elements: Fire, Magic+Physical
Glacial Trail can spawn 7-9 elite Monsters and monsters here have all kinds of immunities. Well not the Magic immunity but two monsters have pretty high resistance to magic. Ghosts spawn here quite often and they are good for rune hunting. I have been farming this place in past with Fire sorceress as there is only one monster type who can be fire immune and you can also directly continue into Driften Cavern from glacial Trail. Number of elites here can be also increased by Evil urns.

Driften Cavern

Driften Cavern

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Fire, but more like Nothing really
New area85 in 2.4 patch. Driften Cavern is directly connected from Glacial Traill. Map is quite small but has good amount of elite monsters 6-8 but issue is many different immunities or high resistances to magic damage. This place could be farmed with build having more than one element but there are honestly better places where to go. Only one
monster is immune to fire here so with little bit of luck it can be sometimes farmed by builds with Fire damage.

Infernal Pit

Infernal Pit

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Poison, Magic, Physical
New area85 in 2.4 patch, map Layout is smaller but packed with high density of monsters and number of elite monsters here was increased from 3-4 to 6-8 in 2.4 patch. Golden super chest is at the end and it is one of 5 best chests in game as it can drop items from TC 87 That means it can drop almost all unique and set items in game. Rest of Infernal Pit is rather unpleasant place because of monsters with various immunities and some monster types are quite dangerous so clearing this place is hard.

Icy Cellar

Icy Cellar

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Fire
Icy cellar is being raised to area85 in 2.4 patch. It is small map just like Driften Cavern with good amount of elite monsters 6-8, but it is much worse as it is occupied by extremely nasty and dangerous monster combinations. Icy cellar has also super unique monster Snapchip the Shatter and Golden Chest. Two ghost type craters can spawn here so that also good for rune hunting. Icy cellar is very challenging place, but it honestly can offer a lot if you have character who can deal with Gloams, Ghosts, Hell Lords, Doll, Vipers and more nasty monsters. Nobody in here is fire immune so fire is ideal damage type for Icy Cellar. You need to go from Ancients way and there are no fire immune monsters either.

Level: 86
Monster types: Undead
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Lightning, Magic, Physical, Holy
Super unique monster guarding entrance to Nihlathaks Temple with monster level 86 and loot from TC87 so he cannot drop only 3 items. Pindleskin is one of the most famous places to farm, because he is super easily accessible directly from town next to Anya after you save her. He is only poison immune, but sometimes can have other immunities because of his randomly generated magic abilities. He can be run very fast offline in like ±20 seconds for every run but you cannot currently run him so fast on battle net because of requirement for game creation. That should change in future hopefuly. So if you play online you can currently just keep killing him as one of your places you go. Best character to farm him is Find item Barbarian with leveled howl and mercenary killing pindleskin. That way you can stack huge MF bonus on your character. Pindleskin might be dangerous for hardcore characters who cant kill him fast enough.

Halls of Anguish+Halls of Pain+Halls of Vaught

Halls of Anguish+Halls of Pain+Halls of Vaught

Area level: 83+84+84
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Physical+magic, Lightning/fire+Conviction
Halls of Anguish is area83, Halls of Pain and Vaught are area84 zones so unique monsters here can drop everything from game. All 3 levels cannot be done well unless you have Infinity. With that you can break fire and lightning immunities in Halls of Pain and Anguish and farm them reasonably well with good equip. Hallf of Vaught is problematic because fire immunes there cannot be broken. I never figured out what build could be good here, probably none as even when you have infinity, there are better places where to go, zones with higher level. Monster density is very high here so if anyone has idea for some good build for this, let me know :).

Nihlathak

Nihlathak

Level: 95
Monster types: Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Fire, Lightning, Poison, Physical/Magic
Nihlathak is miniboss on Halls of Vaught level, he has level 95 and can drop items from TC87. He usualy drops several items and is only one who can drop Key of Destruction which you need for Uber quest. Grands charms from Nihlathak can be also used to cube +45 Life skillers, because his level is very high. He is very dangerous monster and cast Corpse explosion dealing very high damage on hell difficulty. Its very usefull to have something with “slain monster rest in piece” to prevent him from using corpse explosion on monsters killed around.

Harcore characters should be exceptionaly carefull when slayers are no same floor as Nihlathak as there is bug when Nihlathak is trying to whip them, but because they dont have their suicidal version, they will not transform properly and keep accumulating explosion dmg exponencialy with every next whip releasing massive dmg when killed able to take out thousands of Life.

Worldstone Keep level 1-3

Worldstone Keep level 1-3

Area level: 85
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Lightning+Conviction, Physical/Magic
Worldstone keep has 3 levels with quite high monster density and every level can have 6-8 elite monsters. There is many monster types spawning on all levels often with nasty combinations making your life miserable, but not always. Because there is many monster types, you can find all immunities here and in many cases they cannot be broken. Probably best here are lightning damage builds or hybrids with more damage types. Worldstone keep is quite a good place for rune hunting as some monsters spawn in great numbers and there are 3 monster types who have higher chance to drop runes: Finger mages, Wraiths and Souls.

Throne of Destruction + Baal

Throne of Destruction + Baal

Area level: 85 +99 (Baal)
Monster types: Undead, Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Double elements, Physical+Magic, Holy
Throne of Destruction can be entered from Worldstone Keep level 3. Monsters spawning here can make worst combinations in game, succubus with amplify damage, oblivion knights with curses, Stygian dolls, Souls, Greater mummies able to ressurect most of them and many other monster types. Throne of Destruction can spawn 4-5 elite monsters and 5 more super unique monsters from baal waves. Every champion and unique or super unique monster here can drop all unique and set items in game. After Baal waves are destroyed, you can go to worldstone Chamber and kill Baal. He has monster level 99 and TC87. If your character is for some reason too weak to deal with Baal wave 4 and 5, they can be lured away from throne room. Grand charms from Baal can also spawn as or can be cubed into as skiller +45 life. Baalruns are usualy done in group, but can be done solo too with very strong characters.

Diablo clone

Diablo clone

Level: 110
Monster types: Demon
Prefered elements: Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Physical
Diablo clone is Special version of Diablo, but much stronger. He has level 110 and spawn only on Hell difficulty. He is only one in game who can drop Unique Small charm Annihilus. He is tough enemy to beat and you need strong character or good startegy to deal with him. His Magic and physical resistance is 50% and elemental resistances are 95%. Elemental characters will benefit from items with conviction or lower resistance curse to lower his resistances and characters fightning with weapons will greatly benefit from Crushing blow and Prevent monster heal ability from items, which will stop his very high life regeneration. Poison damage and Open wounds also stops his regeneration. Diablo clone has access to all Diablo skills and also use Armageddon. When Diablo clone Spawn, he replaces firts Super unique monster you were close to. For example if you are in new game and he spawn, if you go to stony field, he will replace Rakanishu. He can be summoned by selling 1 unique ring Stone of Jordan to vendors in offline mode and 125 Stone of Jordans online, where it needs to be community effort.

Pandemonium Event

Pandemonium Event

Pandemonium Event is sequence of challenges you need to accomplish to get Unique Large Charm Hellfire Torch. There is many very detailed guides how to finish event and get the charm for various different builds but I still would like to just briefly explain what you need to do to get Hellfire Torch so this guide is complete.

Step 1 - Getting Keys
You need 3x Key of Terror from The Countess, 3x Key of Hate from Summoner and 3x Key of Hate from Nihlathak. You can buy keys online from other players or try to find them yourself. Best character for farming keys is Lighting sorceress.

Step 2 - Open portals
You need to combine 1 of each Key in horadric cube to open 3 red portals. This have to be done in ACT V on Hell difficulty. Portals need to be opened in different places so they dont block each other so Open first, move to some other open space in town and open second and then third again. But I suggest to open only one so you can test how well you will do there. It would be bad to open all 3 portals and then find out you can finish either of them. But if you want to finish event, you need to open 3 portals in same game, otherwise you would open same first portal in new game as before. 3 portals leads to: Matron’s Den, Forgotten Sands and Furnace of Pain. Your goal is to find 3 special Uber bosses in these portals and kill them to gather organs from them. Lets talk little bit more about these 3 maps:

Matron’s Den
Area level: 83
Monster types: Demon
Prefered elements: Fire, Physical
Matron’s Den looks similar as Forgotten tower levels and is full of Rogues and succubus who can cast Amplify damage. You dont need to clear whole Matron’s Den, but you need to find Boss “Lilith”. It is basicly Andariel of steroids, Immune to poison, strong attacks, faster, level 110 and insane Health regeneration. She is very hard to kill without stopping her health regeneration. That can be done by Open wounds from physical attacks as “Prevent monster heal” abvility on items does not work on uber bosses. Normaly poison damage works too for stopping regeneration, but Lilith is immune to poison so thats out of question. When you kill Lilith, she drops Diablo’s Horn so take it.

Forgotten Sands
Area level: 83
Monster types: Demon, Animal
Prefered elements: Cold, Magic, Physical
Forgotten Sands is basicly copy of Canyone of the Magi and full of Scarabs, Swarms, Spiders and Sand Maggots. You need to find there Uber Duriel, much stronger version of Duriel with level 110. He has very high health regeneration as Lilith so you need to stop it with poison damage or Open wound to have better chance to deal some damage. Uber duriel drops Baal’s Eye when he dies.

Furnace of Pain
Area level: 83
Monster types: Undead, Demon
Prefered elements: Poison, Physical
Furnace of Pain is copy of Pit of Acheron map and is filled with Overseers with Hellspawns, Oblivion and Doom Knights, Demon Imps and Pit Lord. Pit Lords are special kind of Megademons immune to everything with exception of physical damage. You have to find here Uber Izual, much strongner version of Izual with some new tricks. He can deal very high physical and Cold damage, can Teleport and summon Pit Lords. Uber Izual is also Cold immune and regenerating his Health as other uber bosses. He drops Mephisto’s Brain when he dies.

Step 3 - Open Uber tristram portal
When you have all 3 organs, you can combine them in Horadric cube to open Uber Tristram. There you will find Pandemonium Diablo, Uber Mephisto and Uber Baal. It is essential to to fight them one by one so you will have to aproach very carefully middle of the Tristram. Its best done when you go from sides far from red portal because you cannot use your Town portals here and if you die and uber bosses will be close to red portal, its pretty much game over. All 3 bosses are much strogner versions of ACT bosses at lvl 110, they have various improvements, insane health regeneration and they can spawn several monsters.

Uber Mephisto has Conviction aura on very high level and spawn a lot of skeleton mages and archers with various immunities. Uber mephisto is also immune to Lightning and Poison. His elemental attacks will do a lot of damage because of his conviction aura and it takes a lot of +resistances to be in positive numbers against him. Pandemonium Diablo can cast Armageddon, spawn Pit Lords and is also immune to Fire. Uber Baal is much stronger and faster than normal Baal and has all his abilities, on top of that he has very high Block chance (55%) and is immune to cold. He can also spawn Dark Lords and Specters so definitely have some mana potions as he or specters will disrupts your mana pool. Uber baal can cast Chilling armor which does double the amount of damage as it used to prior 2.4 version so keep that in mind as multiple projectile attacks will release many ice bolts back at you. His defense was also improved by buffed Chilling armor so its harder to hit him.

When you kill all 3 of them, you will be rewarded with Hellfire Torch. There is only one torch so if you are doing event in group, keep that in mind. Best strategy how to make event easier as possible if you have group or just friends and do it together is to let everyone leave game and enter red portals and find the Uber boss and repeat the same for all 3 of then for Uber tristram just enter red portal and come back to town. Then your group or friends can join back. This way will have Uber bosses set their Health and damage for /players 1 setting. If you dont do this, fights will be much harder.

Best character who can complete Uber tritram solo even with not so expensive equip is Smiter paladin Build. Best is to stack high amount of Crushing blow and have wand with Life tap charges to leech Life from attacking boss with Smite. If you play hardcore and dont have 1200+ Life, dont even think about this event as uber bosses with critical strike can sometimes one shot characters even with that amount of life.

OTHER WAYS HOW TO GET ITEMS

OTHER WAYS HOW TO GET ITEMS

Vendors

Vendors

Town vendors can have very usefull items to help you equip your character. Some items are not always in stock so there is one trick you can do. Every time you leave town by town exit/waypoint/town portal, vendors will reset the items they offer. You can repeat that until they have what you want. If another player is present in town, offer will not be reseted.

Normal ACT I:

  • Charsi and Gheed sells Long bow for Rogue mercenary
  • Charsi sells two socket Helms and armor and rarely 3 socket ring mail. You can insert topaz gems into both to get early MF bonus.
  • Akara can sell good base staff with sockets for runeword Leaf

Normal ACT II:

  • Elzix and Fara can sell gloves and boots with MF on them
  • Fara can sell 2 and 3 socket Breast plates. They can be used to make Runeword Stealth or for putting gems into them. Rubies for more life, topazes for more MF or even Emeralds to increase your shield block. 2 socket Breast plate can be used to make runeword Stealth.
  • Fara can sell 3 socket Large shield, great for socketing gems to increase resistances or later on make Runeword “Ancients Pledge” in it.
  • If you prefer block, Fara also sometimes sells Large Shield of Deflecting
  • Drognan can sell good base for runeword “White”

Normal ACT III:

  • Ormus can sell staves with teleport charges on them, every character can use it.

Nightmare ACT I:

  • Akara can sell wands with Lower resit and Life tap curse charges, both very usefull for majority of characters.

Nightmare ACT V:

  • Malah can sell +3 wacries weapons
  • Larzuk or Anya can sell various armors and weapons which can easily be upgradde for your new characters

Even vendors on Hell can sometimes sell very good and hard to find items like good Assassin claws or paladin weapons with skills for Fist of Heavens build. You can also buy jeweleres armors with Life, which are being used in PvP and they can be very valuable.

Crafting

Crafting

You can get new items by using crafting recipes in Horadric cube. There is many of them and you can find all information about it in here:
The Arreat Summit - Items: Crafted Items
Most valuable crafts are caster amulets and Blood Gloves.

Gamble

Gamble

Gamble can be used to get many usefull items, even set or unique items. Only thing what matters in Gamble is your character level as it will decide level of items you gamble. If you want specific items, just keep refreshing offer with new special button in D2R. I personaly use gamble around level 24 to get some decent rare heavy boots and gloves with MF bonus.

If you want to know more about Gamble, I suggest to watch link below with MrLama who made great video about it and also his Guide how to get Gull dagger in Gamble. Gull dagger is excelent item with +100% magic find bonus improving your chances to find good items significantly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cN4zxFGYo0

Rushing

Rushing

If you have capable character you can definitely gain some runes or even items by rushing others. There is plenty people who are willing to give you their quest drops or Hellforge reward for rushing them. Dont be afraid of asking for HF for rush, but try to be good member of community and rush someone for free from time to time. Rushing for hellforge is based on mutual trust. If you are in act IV, demand completing Hellforge before you go further, if person is telling you to wait after full rush, its good indicator of deception.

Uber service

Uber service

You can make character which is capable of doing Uber tristram and there is a lot of people who cant do it on their own so feel free provide that service for payment. Many people do it and ask for Keys or runes for it.

Charm Cubbing

Charm Cubbing

If you have plenty of Perfect Gems, you can cube grand charms to get Skiller, preferably with something else on it also. Best grand charms are from Baal, Diablo and Nihlathak Hell as they are only ones which can get +41-45 life on skillers. But even if you dont have these, any grand charm from area with lvl 85 is good enough to also get a lot of Life, Just not the +life above 40. You can of course try to cube Jewels , Large or Small Charms too, but people usualy prefer Grand charms for skillers.

Trading

Trading

Trading is powerfull tool how to get items you didnt find or how to get rich if you play online. You can use many places to trade, games,D2R forum, discord servers, traderia and others. Trading is possible only in online mode of course. Your goal is to buy cheap and sell at true price of item or slightly above. You can often get better price if you have some negotiating skills.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

Q: Where is the best to farm high runes?
A: Travincal Council for solo play. For playing with higher player setting 3+ :Kurast superchests, Any map from ACT III+ with high number of clicklable objects, Secret Cow level and any other area with high density of monsters and ghost type creatures like: Ghosts, Finger Mages, Souls.

Q: Does my player level matter for finding items?
A: No, player level is important only for some recipes in horadric cube and quest rewards where higher level can get you items with better properties.

Eh? Isn’t it as simple as /p8 farming high density monsters as quickly as possible or Countess at p1? Oh wait, you aren’t talking about the only relevant meta farming; runes…

No, it is really not that simple

People want HR’s more than anything.

Which is the most efficient way to get them? Is it cows, Trav or LK? This question assumes that the character is optimal for each run. So an FI barb in Trav, a high AOE build with TP for cows, and I guess anyone with TP for LK. As a statistical average, who will get HR’s fastest?

If you check the guide, there is several locations mentioned. its not as easy to say which is best.

What’s the fastest way to get HRs? Trade for them. Run a lvl 85 area and look for HR and any other drop. The chance of finding a Ber or Jah rune is incredibly small.

I suggest as a matter of format that in addition going area by area, somewhere you list the best places to farm runes, and/or possibly other categories of items. It’s easier for quick reference than reading your comments on every area. A solid read though they were.

Re-reading your section on Trav, what do you mean by “Find item doesnt have “nodrop” chance.” But it happens all the time. You successfully FI a corpse but there is no additional drop. I must be misunderstanding what you mean here.

DJ’s simple “wing it” item finding guide:
Level 1: Kill things slowly, find items slowly. (junk gear)
Level 2: Kill things fast, find items fast. (needs maybe a couple of decent items)
Level 3: Kill things faster, find items faster. (needs a handful of decent items)
Level 4: Kill things fastest, find items fastest. (needs a lot of decent items)
Level 5: Get dual dreams, swap helmet with merc about 50 times… Oh wait they fixed that. Nevermind.
Hardcore side note: Don’t die.

Will comment tomorrow, have to go to bed i am super tired lol.

From reading around, looks like your best option for farming High runes is Trav / Cows, If you are only farming for highrunes no need to worry about your MF% as it does not help the drop rate on them.

Some players list cows is the best because its easy to kill/clear cow lvl, and they travel mostly in large packs.

other players list Chaos/arcane sanctuary, both of these zones have the wraiths, lots of them, and they apparently have a small loot table and runes is part of it.

any ways its going to be lots of farming regardless of which zone you decide on, Unless you get lucky… Best of luck.

Well according to streamers and many other players.

Chaos Sanctuary and Cows are you best bet. More players in game the better the chance.

Basic knowledge is kill as fast as you can with some MF the more the merrier but don’t do over load so you struggle to kill stuff.

You can kill a cow level with S tier builds in about 5-6 minutes in a 8 player game.

My personal experience I have ran chaos and baal 300 times and still no jah or ber. The highest rune was Vex so yeah you need to be very grindy. You gonna see low runes drop every so often. RNG is RNG. Nothing drops like candy. Yeah you will probably get a shako, gaze, etc … but your gonna see lots of low class greens and uniques.
Charms will drop and more than 100 of them will be bad before you get something useful.

Anyhow this is the whole D2 game… like it or leave it.

Just watched a Lamma vid where he rates various areas for finding high runes. He thinks LK is best. Anyway, he too tries to explain how FI somehow negates “no drop” but makes no sense, and admits he made no sense and will quit trying to explain it.

Wow, this guide is incredible, and also very useful because it contains some of the new Patch 2.4 information, 5 stars! :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

I think Flayer Jungle in hell deserves mention? Elite Shamans can be killed “twice” leading to double-drops essentially. You can get up to Ber rune there too. Great density so lots of gems and crafting materials… Also great for bases… If you’re character is geared to kill flayers, you can also do the flayer dungeon for higher monster levels (Flayer Dungeon level 3 is level 83). I found an eth Reaper’s Toll there

Same can be said for Tal Rashas tombs in hell… One of the fastest ways to farm gems for re-rolling GC’s etc…

Both areas are incredible for fire-based characters…

If you talking about finding runes itself and online without group play
IF barb in trav
If you talking about trading for those HR keys are the best bc they are more reliable or less rng dependent

Lots of different opinions on that. Some say it’s LK. Some Trav. Some cows. Honestly I got a lot more HR farming cows on the sorc than I have on the FI barb in Trav, though I did get an SoJ and finally a Lo on Trav. But that’s just RNG. Was wondering if anyone had actual math on this.

I added new section : frequently asked question and answered your question there

good suggestion, i will think about what i can do about it.

Monsters have normaly no drop chance. WHat Find item does, it provide chance to get second chance and if roll based on skill level of find item si succesful, there will be drop. Council member can drop 0-3 items and these is still no drop chance. Find item doesnt have “no drop”, it has only % to suceed in skill description and when that happens, it always pick maximum amount of items which can drop. Which is 3 for council members.

THX i am glad you like it, it was a lot of work lol. And still will be, i need to finish ITem database section and 6 other walkthroughs how to make char for fidning items.

Tal rasha tomb is sadly not that good, it is only area level 80. It has high density of monsters but some higer area have also higher density. Various immunities makes this playe are not very desirable.

I dont think its great for Fire base character because greater mummies are present very often, I would even say in majority of tombs and skeletons are all fire immune.

No I dont think it is good place at all. I didnt even mention it from several reasons. Its basicly impossible to run effectively because there is so Waypoint anywhere close and you basicly have to make journey in Flayer jungle to find it. Its just third floor which has area level 83 and there is only 1 elite super unique who has even lower TC than classic unique monsters in area83. There are no others unique monsters on that level and layout of map is almost always extremely terrible for anyone without teleport. There is mostly nothing in that level, only few monsters.

So generaly speaking its really bad. For same reason I didnt mention Claw Viper temple 2 when it is area83 too. You need to first find Second level and there is only one Elite monster, in same very rare cases 2. But map is just tiny and fangskin is also dangerous and Fangskin suffers from same issue as most super unique monsters, lower Treasure class.

Math was done for arcane sanctuary by someone. Math was also done for Lower Kurast super chests. Mabye I will include it in guide as link. I will also be doing math on Objects

Ok that makes sense. It’s good to know that since I’ve done 1000’s of Trav runs using it, and I can’t tell when using FI if I succeeded and got no drop, or just failed. So what you’re saying is if I got nothing, then the FI chance failed because there is zero chance of no drop on FI when it succeeds.

I think that explains why FI seems to nearly double the loot, instead of just 50% more which is the chance for it to succeed. So it’s even stronger than I assumed.

Yes that should be the case.

100 hours of chaos netted me a jah! there is hope for everyone down there!
