Okay so I think I’ve just sussed a pretty unbeatable system for mercing hell trav (a necessity on my GF Barb)
Disclaimer. I was the lucky recipient of a 5os GT so that helped a lot.
So I rolled an Obedience (HelKoThulEthFal) in the Giant Thresher which means that even without Might on, Neeraj (93) boasts a detrimental 1175-2975 dmg and 40% crushing blow.
Right now, Neeraj’s obedience is paired with a 10%ls non eth Andy’s [+15ias jewel] and an eth treachery great hauberk. His res’s are 51-75-75-85 and defense 2868. Now let’s go proc some stuff…
Okay. Now we have Might, Enchant, and Fade on. Neeraj is happy. Usually it only takes a minute to make Neeraj this happy, but sometimes the fade part takes a few.
ahh, I forgot to mention I’m a barb. I’ll edit in values before and after BO too. Anyway, as I was sayin. Neeraj is now makin mo monaay. His life is 4.7k, damage 2419-5582, defense 11,758. Res’s 75 75 75 80.
Time to switch armor. This the final move. Treachery for guardian Angel. I upped mine to Hellforge plate and socketed then threw in another 15ias jewel. Means 14,678 defense, 90-90-90-95 res and 50 ias (resulting in a pretty safe 10 fpj [frames per jab] and 11fpa [frames per attack]*
Now, if you’re not playing a barb you can expect 300% less defense and 122% less life on the guy. I can’t imagine that being problematic based on Neeraj’s perma-green health bar. Happy days!!

Now, if you’re not playing a barb you can expect 300% less defense and 122% less life on the guy. His base health is actually 2087. I can’t imagine that being problematic at all though because Neeraj’s health bar is perma-green. Happy days!!
Okay just a thought or two post-post. If you want to avoid the hassle of proccing fade, you could potentially drop a ral in the Andy’s and an um or all res+dmg/jewel etc in the armor for full res’s w/o fade. Should reach 90-90-90-95 that way too, baring in mind this would reduce ias to andys natural 20 meaning 12/12 frames attack and jab.

I use Leviathan… mine hardly ever dies js.
Treachery > fortitude for survivability.
Fortitude is good on act5 grief stompers that’s about it.
My guess you doing wrong either of 2 things.
A) Aura of merc not kicks right away, merc need to attack mobs (not assist you in attack!) first and even after that aura starts not right away
B) Choice of correct aura. Like previous poster said sadly only 2 mercs are good - holy freeze and holy might. Defiance “looks” great on the paper - well don’t get me wrong
it’s “ok” just not great
Let me elaborate on that a little - Defiance boost “chance not to be hit” but for mobs that goes frenzie it won’t help. You merc need TIME to heal himself out and Holy Freeze give him that time or Holy Might (that do not have cap!) and Merc just need to be high enough level to hit targets
Upped Shaftstop + Vampire Gaze works also nicely

Well than I am just lucky
with my hammerdin damage of merc never a problem (maxed conc). Holy freeze slow everything even those that “immune to cold”. Regular Col Vol give 5k+ damage with 47% DR + Holy Freeze Merc can tank by his own almost everything on single game , well save that damn council where I have to make of them ground beef before they cook merc
Running an A2 Holy Freeze merc with Eth CV Insight, Andariel’s Visage/w RAL, and Eth Gladiator’s Bane… Not having any issues with my merc surviving unless I totally ignore him and let him do his own thing, on his own.
I think it comes down to negligence (or if you’re a Sorceress, not teleporting away to keep him alive).
