Video and audio stuttering after recent patch/update

The past couple weeks, D2R has been running great. Consistent 120 fps, no performance issues of any kind. I was impressed.

Today, the game is running poorly. The FPS is very inconsistent, frames are dropping, stuttering is very apparent, and the audio cuts out each time it stutters. This baffles me because I didn’t change a thing with my PC. No new software, drivers, or hardware changes.

I’ve tried changing every graphics setting in game, including capping my FPS to 60. Capping the fps to 60 still results in very choppy performance. I have tried every single solution imaginable that I could find online. In particular, setting the CPU priority to high, closing every single background program I can, disabling any overlay. After all of this troubleshooting, I made sure my GPU drivers were up to date. Finally, I tried reinstalling and resetting the settings.

When the game is paused at the menu, it runs fine and doesn’t stutter. The game also seems to stutter more often when I’m pressing keys on the keyboard - holding down any key just makes it stutter like crazy.

All of my other games work just fine. D2R too, up until today.

What can I do to fix this?

PC: i7-12700k, rtx 4080, 32gb ram, nvme ssd, Windows 10.

EDIT: It turns out there was a minor patch/update yesterday for all platforms, which might be the reason why this is happening.

Same here! Completely unplayable now.

Already reinstalled game and graphics drivers, messed with game settings and no change…

Also I have the same issue where menus look fine as well as other games. It’s only when I start a game online or offline that the game gets extremely choppy

Hey there,

If you’re experiencing performance issues after the latest patch please make sure that your graphics drivers are up to date.

You can also try deleting the Settings.json file inside of the folder:
C:\Users\(name)\Saved Games\Diablo II Resurrected\Settings.json
After deleting that file re-launch the game so it will recreate it and reset all graphics settings.

Lastly if you’re noticing FPS drops during specific parts of the game or when using specific skills please report the details on the #bug-report forums.

Do you even read the posts you are replying to? We have already updated our graphics drivers and settings to no avail.

Thank you for the reply. I tried doing both updating graphics drivers, as well as resetting the settings, before I made this post. It does not change anything. Something changed with the most recent minor update that is affecting a certain amount of players. Right now, its unplayable in my case.

Are there any known fixes for those of us experiencing all of the video stuttering? It was working completely fine before this patch.

Adding to this, after update stuttering everywhere. Have attempted many fixes and also untinstalled/reinstalled to no avail.

Adding a “me too” to this, stuttering after a small update a day or so ago. Tried updating graphics drivers (even did a clean install for good measure) and deleting settings.json.

No, nothing helps. Exactly the same issues occurred last year, they were gone only after the next patch. I see that many people have the same problem, it started around the same time, and we all have very different PC configurations. It is clear as day - Blizzard introduced the bug in the latest patch, only they can remove it in the next one. When it happens - no idea.

The game has a bug. What to do:
Launch D2R
ALT-CTRL-DEL (opening Task Manager)
On Win 11 look to the left select details
Right click D2R, and set priority
Change to Above normal, High, or Realtime (mileage may vary)

It was working for me at above normal, now I have to set to realtime, and I can just change it back to normal after, and Viola stuttering gone.

My Specs:
13700k
32Gb DDR5 Corsair Vengance 6600
MSI X Trio 4070Ti
Samy 980 Pro 2Tb (latest firmware)

This is what I’ve been doing as a workaround since the bug was introduced as well. If you’d like a shortcut that does all that on it’s own, you can create a shortcut to D2R.exe on your desktop, then put the following in the “Target:” field:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c start “” /High “C:\Program Files (x86)\Battle.net\Games\Diablo II Resurrected\D2R.exe”

The shortcut will then start D2R in high priority. If you want D2R to start in Realtime, you can switch out High with Realtime in the “Target” field, however you’ll need to right-click the shortcut and run as Administrator.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, I have been getting stuttering too while playing with no changes occurring when I turn down the graphic settings… I’ll try the workaround of setting the game at high/realtime priority.

Same.
However, setting the priority to high/realtime didn’t help.Hope it could be fixed soon.
specs:
i7 11800H
RTX3060laptop

Obviously have all drivers, bios, firmware, and windows updated…
Still stuttering Blizz…
It’s insane the only workaround is setting priority.

The stuttering happens before and after a win 11 install and full updates to all drivers.
What happens is just being in any town, or zone with all gfx setting at the lowest or highest fps shifts down and then back up about 10-25 fps every few seconds, and creates stuttering, until the games priority via task manager is changed to real-time.

D2R is the only game that I have that does this. I play Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, FF7 Remake, and many more games in 4k with no stuttering of any kind.

All HW monitor, stress tests, temps, and hardware tests pass. All other applications and
features work as intended and I notice no issues.

My Specs:
Asus Z790 plus WIFI DDR5
Intel 13700K Corsair AIO water cooler
Corsair Vengeance 6600 Hynix 2x16GB (32GB) DDR5
Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVME SSD
MSI 4070 TI Gaming X Trio
Corsair HX850 PSU

I’m having the stuttering issue now too after updating the game today in order to do a free respec of an offline character. The stuttering only happened in ACT 5 and ACT 2 in town. I changed to legacy graphics mode and that fixed it. I played a bit in Legacy graphics and had no issue. So then I updated my graphics drivers no help. I hope they fix this soon. What bothers me the most is that they patch the game but don’t tell me what was changed…

This appears to have been fixed. I went to log in on b net and the game go updated again. I am no longer having the stuttering issues in towns of act 2 and five. Issue seems resolved in offline single player as well! I am Happy!

I just tried D2R offline single player, and no, it isn’t fixed. You’re having a different issue where it only happens in certain towns, the issue we’re talking about is that it happens everywhere.

Just posting here to say that the last update did indeed fix all the stuttering/micro-freezes for me.

And yes, the issue i was having was the one where it happened literally like every 4 seconds no matter where i was and the only way to make it playable was to switch priority to realtime in task manager. (Shoutout to whoever figured that out btw)

Still can’t play D2R. I really hope Blizzard acknowledges there is an issue. I just want to play again.
