This question is a tinder box.
The simplest answer is that it gives people a powerful tool to manipulate a micro economy.
- They can see all trades.
- They can drive prices up by reducing supply.
- They can prey on under priced goods for re-sale.
- They can be used fool people into purchasing crafting components at a higher price than the item to be crafted is selling for.
So many bad things at the expense of gaining easier trading and fair market pricing (Only if you are well aware of trickery and the local micro economy).
The real world auction house of D3 was destroyed almost instantly by people with a background in finance and economics.
- They quickly drove the prices through the roof on even un-wanted, low power items.
- A standard trading economy would have seen those people dispense these items to clear their inventory. This is because it would not be worth their time to trade one item at a time.
It was a disaster of epic proportions.

I am not buying into the āsky will fallā hype. I played WoW for years with a robust auction house environment that is much more complicated than this game. I will stick with RMT for a few dollars per item vs. trying to navigate these horrible trading websites with zero luck.
Did you not experience the Diablo 3 Auction House?
They require so much control and oversight to run.
They also encourage people to hang out, just gaming the Auction House and not playing the game. Thatās great when you are selling skins and subscriptions (the more time they stay the more they pay).
An ARPG starts with action.
People need to know what kind of absolute snakes exist to just abuse any tiny flaw they can in an economy. Auction houses are very, very, powerful tools for those people.
