The fact that you need to rely on your merc who needs the best gear to clear content kinda says it all.
The immunity aspect is fine for D2. However, it was the synergy system that limited the diversity. Roll back the bloat, rebalance and then your character has more efficient options. I don’t remember ever really having a problem on a Frozen Orb Sorc in 1.09, except in certain areas. I wouldn’t be against an adjustment though for -res items and cold mastery to break immunities, such as 1/4 effectiveness as opposed to 1/5th, then slightly nerf conviction and cold mastery if needed. At D2R launch, with the -res bug working in that way, I wasn’t doing that much damage anyways to cold immunes with level 20 cold mastery.
Keep the immunes, it does add to the challenge and can mix up gameplay. The gameplay balance is off, which is why it’s currently more tedious than challenging, and promotes skipping immunes imo.
So you don’t play this game? There are cold immunes in Chaos so it just shows you are a noob who doesn’t actually know anything at all about the game. Lord Deseis is cold immune, Infector can be cold immune and the caster mobs are all cold immune. Jesus tap dancing Christ. You could have at least searched it before posting that stupidity. Way to show us how much of a noob you are!
That is the point of the merc and they can kill almost anything with a cheap insight, Tal mask and treachery. That is dirt cheap easy gear to get.

What does that even mean? A Tal Rasha mask, a Treachery armor and an Insight polearm, how that’s best gear? Anyone can find that in nightmare.

For someone as awful as he is, that is impossible gear to get. We may as well be asking him to get 3 infinities. It is just about as likely.
I haven’t found a Tal Rashas Mask yet, only got it via trade and you need an elite polearm, well at least if you want your merc actually deal some damage.
You need very specific gear to make him survive in hell and in addition to that, you also need this specific merc in order to progress, because he’s the only one who can make use of the strongest runewords in the game.
My first insight was made into a war scythe, it still kills anything I throw at it and was able to clean Baal minions without problems.
Tal Rash mask drops from Mephisto in nightmare all the time, I think even Andariel can drop it.
And all this gear is available in Nightmare

Crown of thieves too. They drop all the time. Pretty much any helm with life leech. Tal is just probably the cheapest and easiest to get.
