Issue Summary:
-
These are offline characters that were legitimately created when Diablo II: Resurrected allowed multiple hyphens and/or underscores in character names.
-
A later update changed the naming validation rules.
-
When selecting one of these characters, the game displays a message that the character name is no longer valid and must be renamed.
-
I enter a valid name that complies with the current naming rules.
-
After confirming the new name, the game freezes indefinitely instead of completing the rename and loading the character.
-
Other offline characters load normally, so this is not a console, network, or connectivity problem.
Version: Latest available patch
Description: I have offline characters that were legitimately created when the game allowed names containing multiple hyphens and/or underscores. These characters were created after the December 2021 patch that stated this issue had been fixed. After updating to the latest version, the game recognizes that these character names are no longer valid and prompts me to rename them. However, after entering a valid new name and confirming it, the game freezes instead of completing the rename and loading the character. Additionally, the game no longer allows creating new characters with more than one special character in the name, displaying: “The name is not valid. Please try again.” This suggests the validation rules have changed, but legacy offline characters cannot be successfully migrated to a valid name.
Steps to Reproduce: Launch Diablo II: Resurrected on Nintendo Switch. Select an offline character created when multiple hyphens and/or underscores in character names were permitted. The game displays the message indicating the character name is no longer valid and must be renamed. Enter a valid character name that meets the current naming rules. Confirm the new name.
Expected Result: The character is successfully renamed, the updated name is saved, and the character loads into the game normally. Actual Result: After confirming the new name, the game freezes indefinitely. The rename never completes, and the character remains inaccessible.
Additional Information: The affected characters are offline characters. They were created while the game accepted multiple hyphens and/or underscores in character names. The issue occurs during the forced rename process, preventing recovery of otherwise valid legacy characters.
