I have never had this happen where a crystal sword got 6 sockets from the socket quest. Is this new?
It’s been like this for ages, I guess it’s just that most of the time people aren’t really interested in socketable crystal swords and so don’t really notice how many sockets they can have.
The number of sockets an item gets from Larzuk or the Horadric Cube is dependent on the item level and the item type (helms, weapons, shields, etc.), for crystal swords specifically ilvl 26-40 is capped at 4 sockets while ilvl 41+ will get 6 sockets.
Ilvl is equal to the monster level of the monster that dropped it, mlvl is equal to the area level in Nightmare and Hell, in Normal it depends on the monster type and there’s also a modifier for minion monsters (+3 mlvl for unique monster minions, certain champion monsters like fallen shamans can also have minions which are +2 mlvl IIRC but not certain).

Popular base for spirit swords. THey get farmed in normal cows so that larzuk will give 4os.
Actually the amount of sockets on a crystal sword depends on the item level it has. So depending if you got it in normal (depends where from exactly), nm or hell will dictate how many maximum sockets it can get. This applies to all items in the game that have more than 3 sockets.
Larzuk will always socket the maximum amount of sockets that an item can have, based on it’s item level.
Edit : Unless the item is magical, rare, set, crafted or unique for larzuk. Magical gets 50% chance of getting 1-2 sockets. Everything else gets 1.

Specifically all of Act 4 Normal, Act 5 at Arreat Plateau thru Ancient’s Way Normal, and Cows Normal, plus Nightmare Act I through Stony Field and Underground Passage lvl 1, only, will drop Crystal Swords that can be Larzuked for 4os.
These are area levels 26-37 so that even Unique Monsters will be within the level 40 threshold. This does not include Nightmare Tristram which is alvl 39 and therefore too high if a champion pack or Unique drops it, of which there are many.
Anywhere else has a chance or a certainty of giving too many sockets from Unique/Champion drops or any mob drops at Larzuk. Best to farm the above areas if looking specifically for that.
Of course, anywhere in Nightmare+ can drop a 4os CS or a chance at cubing one.
